Do Over
“This isn’t right, hero.” Their sidekick said.
“Would you rather I kill them?” The hero countered, screwing something into the gadget. “I miss them, I miss my friend. You do, too.”
The sidekick pursed their lips. “Villain and I weren’t as...close.”
“So that means you’d rather have them as a villain, and not our friend?”
“That’s not what I’m saying at all!” The sidekick sighed. “Shouldn’t we just let them be? They chose their path, we chose ours.”
“They chose the wrong path!” The hero snapped.
Stepping back, the sidekick glared.
“Sorry.” The hero cleared their throat. “I’m sorry.”
“Maybe, you should take a break from this, hero. I mean, minds are tricky, erasing something from them even more so. Villain has years of crime under their belt. There are so many risks if you try to get rid of all that.”
The hero ignored them, and continued to tamper with the gadget.
Lightly, the sidekick placed a hand on their shoulder.
“I know how special they are to you, but this takes time. You need time.” The sidekick took the tools out of the hero’s hands. “When’s the last time you ate, hm?”
“I miss them so much.” Silent tears began to stream down the hero’s face. “I want them back.”
“I know.” Gently, the sidekick placed their hands on the hero’s shoulders, easing them up. “Let’s get some food in you.”
The hero didn’t notice the sidekick’s eyes lingering on their gadget.
It would be no trouble for the sidekick to destroy it later, and even less trouble to pin it on the villain.
