okay, like. i really want trans women as a group to love ourselves and each other enough to avoid letting “why do you hate trans women so much” posts get worded in a way that they can be leveraged against, y’know, the exact trans women the post is meant to support, especially by cis and non-trans-women “signal boosters”
(in general, i regard “why do you hate [group you might be part of] so much” as unduly manipulative language, and i have on many occasions gone out of my way not to reblog posts worded that way. that last particular one was an exception that i had misgivings about even as i reblogged it.)
also this post isn’t about, for example, call-outs toward white trans women by trans women of color, or toward abled trans women by disabled trans women. that should be abundantly clear.
(also i’m not unaware that the “love yourself more” pattern of speech is kind of manipulative in its own right, but tbh i couldn’t think of any other way to bring this up while making it abundantly clear that i don’t fault the people originally writing these posts)
I very strongly support the idea that it's better to teach over kids' heads and let them work to understand than to teach to the lowest common denominator, but do you think I might end up freaking out my freshmen if I try to use Steven Pinker to explain the idea of the manipulation of language in the political arena? I wanted to find actual examples, but all the videos I could find that specifically pointed out politicians using empty language/doublespeak/etc. were strongly politically charged either to the right or the left, and I'd prefer to (as a sub) avoid navigating that minefield and potentially get fired for indoctrination or something. Pinker it is!
