Hello⦠I reinstalled tumblr specifically to interact with this page⦠Iāve been lurkingā¦
Head cannons for Matt with Symbiote and when Matt was talking about how bad he gets in the spins is that ever referenced in the comics?
What do you think happened the time he was referencing? He definitely had a look like āoh yea Iāve been thereā
Anyway if those requests arenāt to weird I would love to know your take.
Hello! (And thank you; what an honor to be the reason someone would come back to Tumblr!).
I am a Shadowland enthusiastāa Shadowfan(d), if you willāand it has left me deeply interested in Matt's experience of possession because one thing that frustrated me about Shadowland was the fact that we were outside of Matt's head for the whole thing. We didn't get to see the best part of a possession, which is the internal struggle! So I have thoughts and feelings about this sort of thing. Matt did actually get possessed by Knull in Daredevil volume 6 #26-27, but like most of that run, it was characterized poorly and didn't do anything interesting with what could have been a cool concept, so we are still left to speculate.
I will be upfront and say that I'm not extraordinarily knowledgeable about the Symbiotes, but I do know this: they are very sensitive to loud noisesāand of course, in regards to Matt Murdock, that detail is significant. My priority, always, when it comes to outside entities jumping into Matt's body is the fact that Matt's body is not a pleasant place to be. He has gone through a huge amount of training in order to simply exist in the world as a person with hypersenses, and an unsuspecting Symbiote is probably not going to stand much of a chance. When considering this topic, I always come back to this scene in AvX when Psylocke tries to enter his mind and then is immediately in pain:
Avengers Vs. X-Men: Versus #4 by Rick Remender, Brandon Peterson, and Joe Caramagna
I think I remember the spins reference you're mentioning from the Netflix show (please forgive me; it's been seven years since since I last watched any part of it, so my memory of specific lines/plot details has become increasingly unreliable), and I can't recall any similar references in the comics. 616 Matt doesn't tend to exhibit much motion sickness, which makes some sense in that if he did easily get the spins, he wouldn't be able to indulge in one of his favorite pastimes, which is swinging around on stuff. This is an activity that is fun and freeing for him, and he probably wouldn't be quite so enthusiastic about it if he was trying to keep his lunch down the whole time. I think it's important to remember the radar sense in this context; Matt does not have a limited field of "vision" (big quotes) the way a sighted person would. He can perceive his surroundings equally well all around himāin Zdarsky's run, Matt refers to this as not having a "natural front," which is a phrasing I've always enjoyed. This super-acute sense of his position in space and lack of a need to constantly turn his head to get his bearings may anchor him in a way that helps to stave off motion sickness in general.
However, if he was drunk and his senses were distorted/impaired...I could absolutely see him getting some surprise spins.
Lots of Waid/Samnee and Co. incoming...
Matt doesn't seem to have a huge issue with boatsāor at least, if/when he gets seasick, he doesn't tend to mention it. I do, however, cherish this little moment from volume 4. That is the face of a man being oh-so-brave about tiny waves:
Daredevil vol. 4 #8 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna
Usually, as I'm sure you've noticed in your reading, most sensory-induced nausea he experiences comes from smells (and presumably tastes too, though we see much less of that; Matt's sense of taste has, historically, been neglected, which I think is a shame). Here's a big one: Matt struggling to be around Foggy during his (Foggy's) cancer treatment because the chemical smells are so awful:
Daredevil vol. 3 #28 by Mark Waid, Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez, and Joe Caramagna
And another (as I said: lots of Waid/Samnee), where Matt's nausea is not mentioned outright in the text but is instead cleverly shown via woozy, melting panel borders:
Daredevil vol. 3 #32 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Javier Rodriguez, and Joe Caramagna
Like much of Matt's sensory experience, we can assume that grossness-induced nausea is something that comes up for him more frequently than we actually see on-panel. At the same time, however, he is also a lifelong city resident, and so has become accustomed to being surrounded by unpleasant sensory input and probably has a pretty high tolerance threshold, simply because he needs to, even for someone with hypersenses.
I have always had a question about Matt and hypothetical drunkenness: Would a drunk Matt become more coordinated because he would forget to hide his powers/training, or would he become less coordinated from the alcohol before reaching that point? This doesn't answer your question at all, but I mention it just because I, too, have questions because we don't really ever see Matt drunk. We see him impaired in other ways (drugged, concussed, sick, possessed, etc.), but while he does occasionally drink socially, or drink because he's sad, he never goes far enough for it to noticeably impair him. This is a great opportunity, fanfic-wise, because it means you have a lot of room to explore. What would the experience of being drunk feel like to someone with super-acute senses? Just how bad would that hangover be? Slightly personal, but I have never been drunk myself, so I find it difficult to actually come up with headcanons for this particular experience, but my feeling on it is that for someone whose sensory world is so tightly regulated, by necessity, while Matt might enjoy the calming aspects of letting go and getting a bit buzzed, I could also see it screwing with his perceptions in ways that would not make him happy. With this in mind, I would speculate that maybe the scene you mention was his first major experience with alcohol? Or he was feeling brave and cocky or having too much fun and went too far and regretted it afterward? "Did something without thinking it through and the consequences were bad" is, after all, a Matt Murdock staple.
I hope this helps! Thank you for the great questions.
