the sad thing is, it has potential to be a valid question. the way is was presented as "lol do u read erotica?" is ridiculous, but i know that if i asked anyone, male or female, their opinion on that series and they had read it, their answer would probably do a lot to influence my opinion of them. it would definitely say a lot about their views on rape, victim-blaming, misogyny, etc. not to mention their reading comprehension abilities. if a more thoughtful version of this question had been asked of the presidential candidates, or any candidates, i would probably be on the edge of my seat waiting to hear the answers, because they would be damn interesting and tell me a lot about the candidate. also e.l. james isn't from the u.s., so nobody would have to worry about losing her vote :P
but instead we get "lol did u read erotica? ur a woman we're not gonna ask about real issues." i just. no. the fact that it was even asked smacks of disrespect for both those women, the position that the incumbent senator currently holds, and the position they're running for. and the female moderator is the one who asked it too.
