Dinner had been an event. It seemed like it was always an event these days. Pasta noodles and vegetables hung from the walls in the small eat-in kitchen, reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock. Michael let out a deep sigh and ran a hand across his tired face. Heād been so sure that the new recipe would be a hit, but his headstrong three year old had dashed that hope almost immediately. Since quarantine began a few weeks ago, sheād grown bored of staying home and had begun to take her frustrations out on the only other person around. Each day in the modest apartment brought a new challenge but the theme this week was picky eating habits. Michael had tried old favorites, trendy recipes from mommy bloggers, and heād even let Zoey pick what he bought at the grocery. Honestly, heād tried anything and everything if he thought it meant she wouldnāt fight him at every meal.
Michael picked up the plates from the table, scraping the few bites that werenāt subjected to his daughterās wrath into the trashcan by the door. As the dishes landed in the small sink and Michael turned on the tap, he bent forward to rest his forearms on the counter. One glance around the warzone kitchen had tears stinging his eyes. He fought to keep them from falling to no avail, eyes blurring as the droplets got lost in the flowing water and spiraled down the drain.
āIt wasnāt supposed to be like this. It wasnāt supposed to be this hard. We were supposed to be in this together,ā Michaelās voice was barely more than a whisper as his thoughts raced and he struggled to compose himself. His voice came out coarse as his frustrated cries hung in the air until it became too thick to breathe in. āItās been nearly ten months and Iām still no good without you. Zoeyās just like you and I need you here.ā Heād hoped setting his thoughts free might ease his mind, but it only made the words weigh heavier on his slumped shoulders. Michaelās pleas were desperate through the sobs. āI wish you were here. Youād know exactly what to do. You always did.ā He was barely thirty when heād been made a widower, carrying the constant grief of a life unlived, seeing a shadow where there should have been a spouse.
Heād been told repeatedly that things would get easier with time but he didnāt think thereād ever be a day where he didnāt need her, didnāt see her in their baby girl. He pulled himself upright with a deep inhale, using the back of his hand to wipe tear stains from his cheeks. Michael couldnāt stop the incessant sniffling brought on by the tears while he continued to take steady breaths through his mouth. He pulled all his focus to wash the few dishes still left from the night and placed them in the drying rack before shutting off the tap. He wrung out the dish towel and began using it to scrub down the mess on the walls. Their dogs seemed to have made quick work of cleaning up the peas that got sprayed across the tiled floor while Michael cleaned up Zoey in the bath and he assumed theyād already made their way to her room.
Through a few small, shaky inhales, he heard a familiar tune playing from the other end of the hallway. After tossing the bits of dinner that heād pulled off the wall into the bin, he closed the lid and hung the dish towel across the faucet to dry. He quietly made his way to Zoeyās room as the music grew louder, sparing a quick glance in the hall mirror so his disheveled state didnāt alarm Zoey.
He had forgotten that heād placed an old CD player in her room with several of his old favorites in a small case. Every now and then she liked to listen to his CDs while she played. She usually needed her dad to help her turn it on but it seemed sheād found the play button on her own and begun the same tunes theyād danced to earlier that week. Her curls, still mildly damp from her bath after the messy dinner, bounced around her round face as she spun in circles and giggles fell from her mouth freely. Sheād slipped a sparkly dress-up outfit over her pajamas and the matching tiara had almost completely slipped free from her hair. Michael noticed both dogs intently watched from the bed and he let a bittersweet smile tug at his lips while she twirled around the room. Zoey reminded him most of her late mother when she smiled and it made his heart swell, reminding him that she wasnāt completely gone.
When Zoey looked up and noticed him in the doorway, a delighted squeal came from her mouth. āDaddy!! Cāmon, I need you! Thereās a ball at the castle and Iāve been invited and I need to practice my dancing. Please! Daddy, please!ā She wrapped both of her hands around Michaelās fingers and tugged him to the middle of the carpet as if they didnāt have a care in the world. Once she was satisfied with where he stood, she steadied herself and placed her bare feet on top of his shoes, reaching out to grab his other hand. His grip on her was secure as he moved the two of them around merrily, careful not to let her slip from her place on top of his feet. Since losing Zoeyās mom, heād promised himself that he wouldnāt let the little moments pass him by. He knew that someday, much sooner than heād like, someone would steal his little girlās heart away from him but he wanted to cherish every moment until then. Even if it did include meal-time tantrums.
The upbeat track faded out, replaced by soft guitar chords and a sweetly crooning melody. In one smooth motion, Michael lifted Zoey into his arms and began to sway with her. Her petite hand landed against his warm cheek as she met his green eyes. She studied him for a beat before he rested his forehead against hers and let his eyes fall shut. As Michael began to sing along softly, Zoey pulled away from his face and adjusted herself down to rest against his chest. He nuzzled her close and smiled at the memory that her mother had always found a calmness in the way his voice vibrated through his chest as well.
āLove me tender, love me sweet, never let me go. You have made my life complete and I love you so. Love me tender, love me true, all my dreams fulfill. For, my darling, I love you and I always will.ā
It had been an exhausting evening and it didnāt take long for familiar snores to fill the air from where Zoey rested beneath his chin. He smiled and silently thanked the universe that the last song on the album had been a ballad. Careful not to wake her, he kept a gentle rock in his measured steps as he clicked off the lights through the apartment. Making his way back into her room, he lifted the light blue covers on her small bed while the dogs shifted toward the far end. When he tried to slide her onto the pillow, Zoeyās grip on his shirt tightened and she let out a sleepy groan. Michael shushed her sweetly with a lighthearted laugh and pulled her back into him. He reached down again to pull the covers back further, causing both dogs to move to the floor with a huff, before slipping between them and letting her rest on top of his chest as he stared up at the ceiling. He covered them both and began to hum the sweet melody once more, letting the combination of his voice and heartbeat lull his daughter to sleep again. It wasnāt long before they both drifted off to a much-needed night of rest.
āāā
With a contented sigh, Zoey placed her new boots on the floor, lining them up to sit below the dress hanging on a singular coat hook on the wall to the right of her closet.
Sheād spent nearly every weekend for the past month piled into her dadās car with her friends, scouring every dress shop in the city. In typical Zoey fashion, she wasnāt interested in an oversized dress with heels that sheād ultimately kick off after the first song played. Somewhere around the fourth store - or maybe fifth? - her friend had shoved her into a fitting room with an understated black a-line theyād picked for her. Though she wasnāt typically a fan of lace or tulle, she knew it was the one sheād spent her time looking for. She knew the lace appliques delicately placed across the neckline would soften up the leather boots and jacket she was already planning to wear.
She pulled one bare foot underneath her and plopped down on her bed, queuing up a lowkey playlist and admiring the outfit sheād put together. She could admit that it was nice to check the prom dress off her to-do list but the centerpiece of the outfit was her momās vintage leather jacket. Her dad had gifted it to her years ago, telling her about how excited her mother had been to save up for a real leather jacket and how sheād shopped through every store in the city to find the right one. Not unlike the way heād seen Zoey searching for the right prom dress.
Of course, Zoey didnāt have many memories of her mom, except for the stories Michael had told her over the years. Somehow, things like her motherās old leather jacket, still in great condition, made her feel connected to the woman she barely remembered. Zoey often wondered how she could miss someone she couldnāt remember on her own. Maybe some of it was secondhand grief from years of watching her father. Either way, she always felt too nervous to actually wear her momās jacket, afraid sheād do something to ruin it, wrecking the already thin tie she had to her. While Michael had always done his best to fill both parental roles, some problems were bigger than he could handle alone. On difficult nights when she needed a mom, Zoey dug the jacket out of the closet and just held it close, hoping to find some guidance from whatever cosmic forces were out there. Now, sheād decided, prom was as good an occasion as any to actually wear it out. It was a big night and she wanted to feel both of her parents there.
As she picked up her laptop to tackle the last few assignments of senior year, Michaelās knuckles rapped on the open door that led to her room. The sound pulled her from her reverie and she glanced up to see her dad in the doorway. Michael, mid-40s, donned large wide-rimmed glasses and his hair was cut short around his face. His natural shade had lightened quite a bit over the years while the ever-present scruff on his chin had taken on shining grey tones. He smiled fondly, taking in the outfit Zoey had put together as it hung on the wall before turning to meet her expectant gaze. Her smile beamed as she questioned, āDo you like it? Do you think Allison will like it? Her dress is baby pink so weāre going to be the least coordinated couple there. But I guess thatās fitting.ā A small laugh fell from her mouth as she looked back at the all black ensemble. Michael still heard Zoeyās mom in that laugh and felt a pull in his chest seeing that jacket again. He nodded in response before pointing to the quilted leather. āSheād be so proud of you, you know?ā His voice held a tinge of sadness amidst the pride he held for his baby girl.
āNo!! No, no no. Donāt cry. You know that only ends with both of us crying!ā Zoey slid the laptop to the side and made her way to the man occupying her door frame. He let out a sniffing laugh and shaky breath as she wrapped her arms around him while burying her head in his broad chest. Michael rested his head on top of hers before placing a small kiss on top of her hair. Heād always made sure that she felt safe with him. No matter what was going on elsewhere, it was the two of them versus the world. But damn it all if he didnāt wish that she had her mom here to see the amazing young woman sheād become.
Zoeyās playlist continued quietly and Michael began to rock back and forth as she relaxed into his arms. He knew moments like this would only get harder to come by in a few short weeks. Sheād grown up in the blink of an eye, right in front of him. He wanted to keep her close as long as he could. It didnāt matter that dinner was downstairs, getting colder by the minute. Slowly, āMoon Riverā crept through the speakers and Zoey pulled her head back. āWait a minute. This is the song we have to dance to,ā she whispered. The smile on her face shifted from sweet to teasing and Michael braced for whatever quick-witted remark she had for him. āWe gotta work on your moves, old man!ā Michael rolled his eyes in response and let out a sarcastic laugh at her words. āDad, the prom is just one week away and we need to practice our dancing. Please, daddy, please.ā
It was custom that each senior waltzed with a parent, or some other guardian, at the very beginning of the prom. Families were only allowed in during this dance and would be ushered out after every group of seniors had taken their turn. Michael and Zoey had been at every after school rehearsal for the past 6 weeks, trying desperately to learn the choreographed steps. Zoey had mastered the box steps with ease. The turning box took a few more tries, but she got it eventually. Michael had taken even more practice though, and she was determined they would perfect the steps before they were in front of all her friends. He didnāt object, not wanting to embarrass her. Letting out an exasperated sigh, Michael stepped further into his daughterās room, helping her push a few things out of the way as she started the song over and stood tall in her ballroom posture. Michael took small steps but still managed to run into a few things as Zoey coached him through the routine. They made it through to the end of the song unscathed and upright, counting that as a victory.
As Zoey let her rigid posture drop, Michael placed both of his hands on each side of her head, pulling her close again to place another kiss on top of her head. āWeāve got this, Z,ā he reassured her. She snaked her arms around to his back as the next song on her playlist began. They stood still in the silence as a familiar voice began to croon through the air. āDo you remember that I used to sing this to you to get you to sleep? It always did the trick after a rough day,ā Michael mused as his hands brushed over her hair, reminiscing on days gone by. She leaned back to look up at her dadās face before answering. āOf course I do! Why do you think I listen to it so often?ā
The greying scruff on Michaelās chin made her giggle as it tickled her forehead where he left a kiss. āMy sweet girl,ā he mused as they began to sway again. She hummed along with the melody before Michael joined in, smooth voice lilting over the recording.
āLove me tender, love me long, take me to your heart. For itās there that I belong and will never part. Love me tender, love me true, all my dreams fulfill. For my darling, I love you and I always will.ā
In true Clifford fashion, Zoeyās stomach rumbled through the otherwise quiet bedroom as the next verse began. It sent both of them into a fit of laughter, reminding Michael of the reason he came up to her room in the first place - the dinner waiting downstairs. Zoey stopped her playlist before they made their way to the kitchen, voicing their concerns that the cats had jumped up on the counter to help themselves.
āāā
Zoey couldnāt help the smile stretched across her full cheeks as she parked her car in front of her fatherās home. As she reached for the door handle, her free hand lifted the back of her fiancĆ©eās palm to her cherry chapstick-covered smile and she placed a series of small kisses. Allisonās warm eyes met Zoeyās gaze with a blissful smile of her own before she spoke hesitantly. āThe last planning session before everything is in motion. Ready for all the questions from Mr. Wedding Planner in there?ā Zoeyās eyebrows quirked up and she reached behind the seats to pull out her planning binder. āReady if you are!ā They stepped out of the car and laughter followed them through the front door to announce their arrival.
The butterflies in Zoeyās stomach hadnāt diminished even slightly since the moment Allison got down on one knee during family game night. Though if Zoey honestly thought about it, the butterflies had been there since she worked up the nerve to ask Allison to prom as her girlfriend. She hoped sheād have the flutter in the pit of her stomach as long as she had air in her lungs.Ā
The proposal had been intimate and thoughtful and sweet and perfectly them. Allison had enlisted Michaelās help, along with his long-term partner Calum, to spell out āmarry meā on the game board during Scrabble. The three of them had needed to work together and it had taken a couple rounds of play for the right letters to show up. Zoey was so engrossed in the game that it took her a few beats to piece it together, even as Allison dropped to the floor in front of her while Michael tried to keep the happy tears from falling. Since then, the days had been speeding by at a dizzying pace and she felt like the big day would sneak up on her if she blinked too slowly.
They made their way through the home, cast in an amber glow from the autumn sunset, and found Michael and Calum putting the finishing touches on their typical Tuesday night dinner. Michael had always been a good cook but heād thrown himself into more complex recipes with the extra time he had in his early retirement. The delicious aroma wafted through the open air to greet the brides-to-be as they exchanged familiar greetings with the gracefully greying men, arms held open expectantly.Ā
āI see someone came prepared,ā Calum teased, pointing in the direction of Zoeyās wedding planning binder. āI learned from the best,ā she winked in return. Calum had earned his living as an event planner before retiring to spend his days with Michael and heād been all too eager to help out. Sometimes he was a little overzealous, especially when it came to flowers, but neither bride worried over it. He had thirty-something years of experience and they would put his expertise to good use as long as he wanted to help.
āWell? What are you waiting for? You know better than to be shy around here - dig in!ā Michaelās cheerful lilt brought out a chorus of laughter as the four of them began to pile their plates high with his savory creations.
Dinner together was never dull; someone always had a story to tell. Allison was gunning for a big promotion at work while Zoey worked hard to manage the small business she started last year. Michael told of all the highs and lows in his cooking adventures that week and how heād befriended a neighborhood cat that had appeared on their porch. Calum had warned him not to feed it but eventually found the bowl under the front steps that heād been sneaking scraps into. In the years theyād lived together, Calum made the local farmerās market a habit and that week Michael had finally gone with him. He should have known Calum would have everyone wrapped around his finger. He couldnāt help his amazement at the way Calum charmed all the vendors into some sort of special sale for his produce, flowers, or baked goods. He noticed that Calum was the only one who seemed to be privy to these discounts. Michael couldnāt even be upset though because Calum had gotten a beautiful sunflower bouquet just for him. Calum would never admit that he just wanted to know he still had it - whatever it was.
With four sets of hands, clean up happened quickly before the wedding binder was sprawled across the table. They spent the next few hours pouring over choices for every imaginable detail. Calum had helped them create a checklist and prioritize important items and extremely time sensitive details. They managed to cross off a few more items on the checklist before Michael decided it was time to bring out dessert - apple pie with the tart apples from the āApple of My Pieā stall that Calum had recommended at the farmerās market.
When she was sure Michael was out of earshot, Zoey leaned across the table to whisper to Calum. āSo when are we doing this for you two?ā she asked as she threw a glance at her dadās back. Allison did her best to control her laughter at the obvious prying. Calum simply waved her off with a smile, āWeāve been together, what, twelve years? Just after you started college? I think heās stuck with me at this point, ring or no ring.ā Zoeyās inquisitive stare didnāt falter at Calumās light humor so he continued to entertain her question with a more serious tone. āYou know⦠weāve talked about it but he always said he couldnāt remarry after losing your mom. I always thought I wanted a wedding, even just a small one for friends and family, but itās one thing I wonāt push him about.ā Calumās eyes were filled with adoration as they settled on Michaelās back where he stood carefully slicing the pie. āHeās the best thing thatās ever happened to me and Iāll take this in whatever way makes him comfortable, in whatever way heāll have me.ā
When he turned back to face her, to see if his answer satisfied her curiosity, her eyes were brimming with emotion and concern immediately painted his features before she spoke. āI always thought maybe he didnāt remarry because of me, because he didnāt want me to feel left behind or something. And maybe thatās selfish or strange. But I couldnāt be more thankful that he has someone as caring and thoughtful as you, Cal.ā Her voice had a slight rasp to it as she swallowed down her overwhelming joy. She punctuated her sentiment by placing her hands over one of his on the table. As he sandwiched her hands between his, he told her how lucky he felt to get to spend the rest of life loving Michael and that he didnāt need a marriage certificate to do that. Allison placed a grounding hand across Zoeyās back as they all inconspicuously sat back into their seats just in time for Michael to return with apple pie and vanilla bean ice cream. If he suspected anything about the conversation between his daughter and his partner, he didnāt let on as they continued to make their way down the wedding checklist between delighted mouthfuls of pie.
The hours passed as they sat around the kitchen table picking out scripts for the invites, flowers for the ceremony, centerpieces for the reception, and favors for the wedding party. Allison stretched her arms over her head, soliciting several put off responses at the loud cracking noise her spine made. āEw, yourself,ā she joked as she rose from her spot at the table. As she moved toward the living room, she turned over her shoulder to suggest that they all take a break from hunching over the pages of options laid out in the binder. Everyone else seemed reluctant, not wanting to lose the momentum theyād already built up. Allison turned her back to them and made her way to the record player next to the couch.Ā She carefully pulled a sleeve from the shelf and let it begin spinning before making her way back to the table where the others still sat.Ā
As she passed through the doorway, the beats of āHeartbreak Hotelā sounded through the room and she swung her hips wide with the best Elvis impression she could manage. The overstated moves earned a laugh from her fiancĆ©e and wolf whistles from the two men seated across from her. Allison pulled Zoey from her seat and shimmied them back into the living room for a dance break, despite Zoeyās protests that they still had several items to work through. Allison assured her thatās why she needed a dance break and that theyād get back to it as soon as the record needed to be flipped over. To Allisonās complete delight, Zoey caved and danced with her until the bluesy tune faded into a familiar ballad.
Zoey turned toward the dining room to find that Calum and Michael had followed to watch them from the safety of the door. The two men stood as if they were made to fit together. Michaelās head rested perfectly on Calumās shoulder and his hands splayed softly across Calumās stomach under Calumās hands. Even so, Zoey knew she still had her dad wrapped around her finger after all these years. She put on the biggest puppy dog eyes she could manage and stretched out her arms before pleading with him, āThe weddingās still six months away, but I need to practice my dancing. Please, daddy, please.ā His sheepish smile was bright in the low lamp light as he maneuvered around Calum. Michael placed a kiss to Calumās smiling cheek as he squeezed through the door frame beside him. āYou know Iāll never turn down a dance with my best girl,ā he remarked as he took her in his arms. Calum, in turn, made a large sweeping motion as he bowed to Allison. āMay I please have this dance?ā Always a drama queen in every group. Allison laughed and took his hand, letting him lead her across the small room in an effort not to intrude on Zoey and Michaelās sweet moment.
Michael hummed along to the melody and his voice vibrated through his chest under Zoeyās head, sweeping a sense of nostalgia over her. āDad?ā she questioned as she lifted her head to look into his pale green eyes. Theyād become even more pronounced over the years as the color faded from his hair, though he tried to hide behind the wide-rimmed glasses that stopped just above his full cheeks when he smiled. His eyes were slow to open and he only offered a hum in response. āWhat if we made this our father-daughter dance at the reception? I know itās not a typical choice, but it would just mean a lot to me and -ā Michaelās lips landed soft against Zoeyās forehead with a smile, immediately soothing her rambling mind. āI would love that, Z.ā
Not trusting her mind and voice to work with her, Zoey simply nodded and nuzzled her head back into Michaelās chest, hugging him as close as possible. Michaelās smile grew as he tossed a glance across the room to where Allison and Calum swayed casually, lost in some giddy conversation if their expressions were any indication. With a contented sigh, he placed another kiss on top of Zoeyās curls. His voice was soft at first, only loud enough for Zoey to hear, but then it grew just enough to be heard over the record player as he sang.
āLove me tender, love me dear, tell me you are mine. I'll be yours through all the years, ātil the end of time. Love me tender, love me true, all my dreams fulfill. For, my darling, I love you and I always will.ā
He couldnāt help watching Allison and Calum as they looked over fondly. Michael thought of all the times it was just him and Zoey against the world. Everything had changed so much since he lost her mom. He couldnāt believe how their little family had grown over the years and he was so proud of the life theyād made and the love they all shared. Michael tried not to let his emotions get the best of him, but he couldnāt help the crack in his voice as the last lines closed out.

After years and years of working on the X Files, Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were finally retiring. Over the past couple of years, Fox had been training up a fresh agent heād met during a guest lecture at the FBI academy. Agent Mulder was there to talk about profiling in āextreme circumstance,ā promising that the eager students could ask him questions pertaining to any other topic following lecture related questions. The first agent he called on, Michael Clifford, struck him with the earnest expression on his face as he asked about the X Files Project, but also with his appearance. His hair was dyed black, eyebrow pierced and an earring dangling from his earlobe, reminding him of his late friend, Langley.
The aged agent took to Agent Clifford quickly, taking the young man under his wing and teaching him all he had learned over the past thirty years. The more time he spent with the younger agent, the more he reminded him of Langley. His skill with computers, the clothes he would wear when they met up outside of the office, even a few of the new games he would describe when asked about them sounded like something Langley wouldāve enjoyed. But there were also things that were distinctly Michael, which Mulder came to like about the younger agent, taking to him quicker than anyone he had met since the loss of The Lone Gunmen.Ā
After two years, Mulder and Scully both decided that it was finally time for them to retire, knowing that they were leaving the X Files in good hands.Ā
The day after Mulder and Scullyās retirement party Michael was back in his office...or rather closet. Heād been officially assigned to the X Files two weeks ago, to help with the transition period before Fox and Dana left. The small room felt strangely empty now that Michael was the only one in there. When the three of them all squeezed in there when Mulder wanted Michaelās opinion on something or over the past two weeks, Michael had found it hard to imagine having to do this before the files were digitized, when filing cabinets jutted out away from the walls.Ā
He was sitting behind Mulderās desk, laptop in front of him, the camera covered by a piece of blue masking tape, files that Fox had asked him to go over open on the screen. Michael spent most of the morning fixated on reading through these different cases, only being pulled out of it by a gentle knock on the open door.Ā
He looked up, pushing his glasses up his nose to see who was interrupting him. His heart fluttered and stomach did a somersault when he laid eyes on the man occupying his doorway. Dark curls, glowing skin, and a jawline that Michael would kill to kiss were all he was able to process before the man had fully entered the room. He approached Michaelās desk, tattooed hand reaching out, āIām Calum Hood, your new partner.ā he stated, waiting for Michael to take his hand.
Michael rose to his feet, office chair rolling into the wall in his haste. āHell of a way to ask a man out,ā he joked as he shook Calumās hand, lower lip rolling into his mouth when he realized heād voiced that thought aloud.
Calum let out a good natured laugh at Michaelās response, smile pushing up his round cheeks and crinkling his eyes. Michael let out an anxious, relieved laugh, taking Calumās hand and shaking it firmly. āSo,ā Michael started, āwhat happened to get you sent down here?ā
Calum looked at Michael, slightly bewildered, releasing the blondeās hand and going to lean on Scullyās desk. āWell, I finished up grad school back in May, getting my Masters in Zoology, so I was looking for a job because...student loans. Anyway, a couple weeks after graduation, I was checking my email for any responses from employers. And I found a job offer from the FBI. They said that they anticipated an opening coming up within the next few months and that they needed someone with my expertise to fill it. I didnāt know what theyād need a zoologist for, but I figured it was an offer and it definitely wasn't working at a grocery store and coffee shop to make ends meet, so I took it. Finished up at the academy two weeks ago and this morning while I was getting ready I got a call saying that I was to come here today, that I had been officially assigned to the X Files, and where to find you.ā
Michael nodded, āSo youāre going to be the Scully to my Mulder then,ā he stated confidently.Ā
Calum hummed, slowly beginning to take in the office, āSuppose I am.ā he started, eyes landing on the āI Want to Believeā poster Mulder had left behind. āSo, do you really believe in this? Like, how did you end up here?ā
Michael chewed his lip, shrinking behind Mulderās desk. āI mean...I donāt think any of it is improbable. Iām much more interested in cryptids and mythical creatures than aliens and government conspiracies, though Mulder and Scully definitely got plenty of evidence of both of those, even if some of it did end up mysteriously destroyed or disappeared. But it is also hard to argue against aliens, especially with those videos that Tom DeLongeās organization put out. Mulder claimed to have come across a mothman once, but I doubt that thatās what those creatures were. The description of the one Scully shot doesnāt match up with mothman at all, other than the red eyes. The things they encountered blended in with the forest surrounding them and didnāt fly. Mothman has wings, thatās why heās called mothman! I just...donāt understand how Mulder came to that conclusion, may have argued with him over it a couple times.ā
Michael continued to explain how heād gotten involved with Mulder, how theyād become friends over the past two years, leading to Mulder requesting that Michael be moved to the X Files before his retirement, ensuring that someone would be able to continue his work under an official capacity, that the X Files wouldnāt become buried under dust like they had been before Mulder came along. āAnyway,ā the blonde finally concluded, āI suppose since youāre here now, I should send you some of these files that Iām going through, get another perspective on them and all.ā
~~~~~~~~
Later that week Michael met up with Mulder after work. He smiled when the young agent came into the room, inviting him over to their corner table. āSo, howās working as a solo agent going?ā Mulder asked once Michael had settled into the open seat.
Michael laughed softly, shaking his head. āI was a solo agent for maybe two hours. Sounds like they were planning for your retirement the second you both started talking about it. Agent Hood is pretty nice though, canāt wait to get more of his thoughts when we actually get out into the field.ā
Mulder nodded, mouth twitching into half a smile. āShouldāve known theyād have someone to counteract you ready. He a doctor?āĀ
āNah, zoologist. Probably best given my tendencies towards cryptids.ā
Michael continued to sit there explaining everything heād learned about Agent Hood in the past week, skipping out on the part where he found the other man incredibly attractive. Mulder sat there with rapt attention, nodding along as Michael detailed their discussions about the files that Mulder had left for him.
They left the bar a couple of beers later, Mulder giving a stern reminder about not trusting people before they parted, slipping Michael a piece of paper as they gave each other a handshake and hug.
~~~~~~~
After a couple of years working together, Michael and Calum were incredibly close. They were out in the field, staking out the office of a man that they were told would provide a lead on a young boy whoād gone missing in Virginiaās Shenandoah National Park, who Michael believed may have been taken by a bigfoot. Once again, Michael was explaining to Calum how a bigfoot could possibly be the culprit in this situation.Ā
āLook, there are different variations of bigfoot sighted on every continent except Antarctica. Among them there are three different types of yetis, differentiated by both size and color, in a single mountain range. So Iād say, biologically, it would be safe to assume that in a country as large and differentiated in climates as the US, it makes sense that there would be variations in Sasquatches in different parts of the country. As Iāve mentioned before, the classic bigfoot descriptions that weāve gotten from the Patterson-Gimlin film and other sightings in the Pacific Northwest are different from sightings in other parts of the country. Generally, East Coast Sasquatches are smaller than their West Coast counterparts, lessā¦.thicc, for a lack of a better word, and for some reason ones in Florida are particularly pungent, hence them being called skunk apes.
āThere are cases of children whoāve gone missing in the same circumstances this child has, being found in caves or places that they couldnāt have possibly reached in the amount of time theyāve been missing, at least not on their own. And some of those kids say that they were rescued by a large, hairy man, or a bear, like that kid in North Carolina a year or two ago. The question is, do bigfoots see this small, helpless child and take them in to take care of them and set them out where they can be found when they hear searchers nearby, or do they just see them and go āooh cuteā and then the kid wanders away while the bigfoot that picked it up is out foraging.ā
āThatās all well and good Michael.ā Calum started, a smile playing across his lips at the joke he was about to make, āBut couldnāt it just as easily be aliens?ā
āItās plausible.ā Michael said, missing Calumās joke. āThere are even some people who actually believe that, because there are occasionally UFO sightings around the same time as a surge in bigfoot sightings, that perhaps bigfoot is extraterrestrial. I personally donāt think that, I think theyāre just a terrestrial species we need to protect and study further, maybe theyāre just as interested in the strange lights in the sky as we areā¦...wait thereās our guy.ā
Calum looked out the window and across the street, nodding as he spotted the man that had been described to them. He jumped when he realized that Michael was already out of the car and striding across the street. He easily caught up with the blonde, the pair of agents walking side by side as they approached.Ā
āHey doc!ā Michael called, reaching into his pocket for his badge as the man ahead of them turned, āFederal a--ā the man took off, ducking down a side street. āShit!ā Michael broke into a run, tossing the car keys to Calum, āhead him off!ā
Michael kept up with the man, weaving through the narrow streets, finally catching him when he ran into a dead end. āPlease, donāt exterminate me,ā the man whimpered, turning to face Michael, hands raised.
Michael stared, momentarily confused until he realized that he was looking at a familiar face. āHey, no, itās ok, Iām not the bounty hunter. My name is Agent Clifford, I was told that you could answer some questions I had about the missing child.ā Heavy footsteps came from behind him and the alien clone started, brown eyes darting from side to side, looking for an escape. Michael held up his hand, āItās ok, itās just my partner, Agent Hood, he doesnāt want to hurt you either, we just need information to find this little boy.ā
Calum came to a stop next to Michael, assessing their surroundings before his eyes landed on the man Michael was talking to. Immediately his eyebrows furrowed, āThatās...thatās fuckin me. Mike, why are we looking at me?ā
Michael chewed his lip, but there was no denying it. Despite the lack of tattoos, the less defined muscles, and the fact that this man had a mop of curls instead of the buzzcut Calum had been sporting, there was no denying that the man in front of them was a carbon copy of Calum Hood. āCal,ā he said softly, using the same tone heād had for the clone, āI promise weāll discuss this later, but right now we need to find the kid, and the man in front of us can help with that.ā
Calum swallowed thickly before agreeing, āYeah, ok. Cāmon, letās get back in your office, Doc, ask you our questions and then get out of your hair.ā
~~~~~~~
Two days later they found the young boy, wandering outside an opening in the mountainside when he heard his name being called a hundred feet below. Two rescuers climbed up the sheer face to get the kid, Calum and Michael following, using tree roots for hand holds. The two rescuers rappelled back down once one had the boy safely perched on their back. Michael, meanwhile, went to investigate the small cave, Calum reluctantly following behind. āYou know,ā he said softly, āif there is something that brought the boy in here, itās probably not going to be happy if it finds us in its home.ā
āNot gonna be here long.ā Michael said simply, pushing a little further back.
Calum hummed softly, looking around the small space. Michael called from the back of the cave and Calum ran over, worried that his partner had discovered whatever actually lived in this space. Instead he found Michael crouching at the edge of what appeared to be a bed, made of woven twigs, leaves and down feathers, and much larger than what a five year old would need, or even be able to make, especially in the three and a half days heād been missing, with the only way in and out of this cave being a 100ft drop.Ā
āWow,ā Calum whispered.
He pulled out his phone and took a few photos, Michael laying on the stone floor in front of it for reference, ends of the apparent bed extending a few inches beyond Michaelās head and feet on each end. He opened the measuring app, taking screenshots as he got the measurement of the length and width of the nest, 7ā6ā long and 5ā4ā wide, for his report later. Once he was done documenting the nest, Michael carefully crawled in, skimming the surface.Ā
He let out a gasp, quickly pulling an evidence bag from his pocket and carefully picking up a clump of hair. āThis is laying on the surface of the nest, not woven in like the rest of the material, which meansā¦.ā Michael explained excitedly, green eyes gleaming as he looked up at Calum.
Calum smiled, finishing his partnerās sentence, āIt came from whatever lives here. That should be good for your theory Mike, now letās get back down to the camp with everyone else, before Bigfoot makes us his new pet.ā
Michael scowled at Calumās playful tone, but carefully crawled out of the nest, examining the cave one more time as they slowly exited, hooking back into the ropes and rappelling back down, picking their way through the brush and back onto the trail. They caught back up with the two rescuers they were with, who had already radioed ahead that they had the boy, so everyone should be heading back in too. They made it back to camp after half an hour of walking down the trail, the young boy halfway to falling asleep on the rescuerās shoulders until his parents cried out upon seeing them appear at the edge of the treeline. They set him down and he ran to his parents, letting them scoop him up and cover his face with anxious kisses. Michael and Calum both smiling as they watched the reunion. The family climbed into the ambulance to go to the hospital so their son could get checked out, one of their friends following in the car, but he seemed perfectly fine.Ā
~~~~~~~
Once all the volunteers were accounted for, Calum and Michael got in their car and drove back to their cabin, where theyād stay one more night before returning to the Pentagon in the morning. Calum cooked up some pancakes in the small kitchenette and they sat on the edge of his bed to eat. āSoā¦ā Calum started, āWe still need to talk about why our informant was...yāknow...me, but not.ā
Michael nodded, swallowing his syrup soaked bite of pancake. āSo, you donāt have any recollection either in your childhood or during college, of missing any time? No strangely realistic dreams that poke at the back of your mind?āĀ
Calum stared into the distance, pensieve expression on his face as he dragged a piece of pancake through the extra syrup. Finally he spoke, āThere is a night, during finals in undergrad. I remember leaving the library, and then I remember waking up on my dorm room floor, nothing in between. It was probably about 1am when I left the campus library to go home, and then 7am when my roommateās alarm went off so he could get ready for his first exam. He didnāt remember me coming in either.ā
Michael nodded slowly, setting his plate aside and going into the kitchen to rinse his syrupy fingers. āLemme see something,ā he said softly, crouching behind Calum on the mattress.
He nodded and Michael carefully ran his fingers over the back of Calumās neck, gasping when he found a little bump just under the skin. āWhat is it?ā Calum asked softly.
āI think itās the same thing that Scully found after she was returned.ā Michael explained softly, āWhatever it is, weāre not taking it out.ā He added firmly.
āSo...you think that maybe Iāve been taken?ā
āIt seems that way, nothing else explains why youāve got a clone running around.ā
Calum nodded, about to say something else when Michaelās phone rang. He frowned at the screen, not recognizing the number, but answered, āAgent Clifford.ā His face grew panicked as he listened to the person on the other end. āWeāll be right there.ā he stated before hanging up. āYour clone is in trouble.ā he stated, stepping into his shoes and grabbing the keys, Calum following after him, shoes in hand.
He sped through the mountainside town, skidding to a halt in front of the office where theyād waited a few days before. Instead of sitting in the car this time, they ran through the front door. They split up to search the rooms, Michael finding the hybrid cowering beneath a desk. Michael crouched on the floor by him, softly trying to hatch a plan to get him out of there safely when there came the sound of a scuffle in the next room. Michael smacked himself in the head, āFuck, Calum looks like you, shit. Okay, look, Iām going to go distract the bounty hunter and save Cal, get out of here.āĀ
The hybrid nodded, slipping out of the room after Michael, going the opposite direction of the commotion as Michael slipped the silver needle out of his pocket. He entered the room the noise was coming from, seeing Calum pinning the bounty hunter to the floor. He swallowed, calming his nerves slightly, clicking the handle of the needle. The soft āpftā that the needle made as it appeared from the handle caught the attention of the bounty hunter, looking up from where Calum was holding him down, struggling further against the agent atop him. Michael stepped further into the room, raising his hand with the needle in it, slowly waving it as he said āThis is not the man you are looking for.ā
āMichael, for fucks sakeā Calum groaned.
āOh Iām sorry, I donāt plan to run into another Calum clone out in the world and see them get fucking murked!ā Michael exclaimed, before turning his attention back to the bounty hunter, āLook, this guy is who they sourced the human DNA from for the clone youāre after. And if youāre after him because of us, he didnāt tell us about whatever heās working on, just how to find a lost kid. So...Calum, run on three.ā
Calum stared, but listened, Michael counting down as the bounty hunter stared. Calum dropped him right when Michael said three, scrambling from the room. Before he had time to react, Michael was on the bounty hunter, pushing the needle into the back of the manās neck, pulling his shirt over his nose and mouth as the neon green substance began to bubble from the wound. He pulled the needle out as more green goo frothed forth and ran from the room and down to the car, where Calum was waiting. As soon as Michael closed the door Calum sped off back to the hotel. āOne Calum makes me flustered enough as is,ā Michael muttered, clicking his seatbelt, āTwo? Fucking nightmare for my sanity. At least he doesnāt act like you too.ā
Calum tried to ignore what Michael was saying, heart racing from what he was going to pretend was the fight heād just been in. āWhere do you think heās going to go?ā Calum asked softly after a moment.
Michael shrugged, slouching down in his seat. āHopefully somewhere safe, skipped town if heās as smart as the man he came from.ā
Calum was thankful for the darkness as he continued to drive, cheeks turning pink.Ā
He pulled back into their space in front of the cabin, nudging Michael before he got out of the car. He took a deep breath, smiling at the scent of honeysuckle filling the air from the bushes nearby. He heard Michaelās door close and turned to look at the blonde, smile on his face. āWe going in?ā Michael asked, tilting his head toward the cabin door.
Calum nodded, licking his lips as he slowly made his way up the gravel path towards the cabin. The plates of half-eaten pancakes still sat on Calumās bed, probably extra soggy and cold by now. He hummed, kicking off his shoes as Michael came in, closing the door behind him. Calum glanced back saying, āHey, thanks for saving my life back thereā¦ā
Michael hummed, stepping out of his own shoes, āYou seemed like you had it pretty under control when I came in.ā
Calum scoffed, turning around and taking Michaelās face in his hands, searching the blondeās face for half a second before leaning in and kissing him deeply. Michael hummed, kissing him back immediately, long arms wrapping around Calumās broad shoulders. Calum pulled away after a minute, licking his lips, savoring the taste of Michael on them before he whispered, āKissing you is all Iāve thought about since the moment we met. Figured now was as good a time as ever.āĀ
Michael nodded slowly, leaning his forehead on Calumās. āAnytime wouldāve been perfect by me, so long as it actually happened.ā
Calum laughed softly, leaning in and kissing Michael again. āAny other way youād like me to show my gratitude?ā he teased softly, a hand making its way down Michaelās arm.
Michael leaned into Calumās touch, letting out a gentle whine. Calum hummed, pressing a light, experimental kiss to Michaelās neck, fingers reaching to pull at the hem of Michaelās shirt. Michael let him remove it, hands landing on Calumās bare biceps as Calum stared at Michael in awe, eyes exploring the blondeās bare torso in a new way.Ā
Calumās hands began to explore the expanse of pale skin, fingertips gingerly tracing the tops of his hip bones, hovering over the waistband of his jeans. Michael let out an impatient whimper, wrenching the hem of Calumās black tank top from where it was tucked into his slacks. Calum let out a small grunt of affirmation, reaching behind him and tugging the shirt over his head, tossing it to the side. Hunger consumed him, pressing his chest to Michaelās, feeling the slighter man bounce slightly as his back met the cabin wall. He leaned in, holding Michael in a sucking kiss, one hand firmly on his waist while the other tangled in the messy blonde hair.Ā
He pulled out of the kiss after a minute, barely breathing as he let his lips trace Michaelās jaw, coming to rest by his ear, teasingly sucking the lobe between his lips, giving it a gentle tug. Michael was softly keening, fingers weakly pulling at Calumās muscular arms, trying to urge him to the floor in front of him. Calum let out a low chuckle, voice a rasp in Michaelās ear, āLucky we got ourselves together the one time weāre not in a shitty motel with paper for walls, huh Mikey?ā
Michael let out a whine, hips pressing forward as Calum worked at the blondeās zipper, shimmying the black denim down Michaelās thighs to his knees. His lips traveled Michaelās chest as his hands nimbly pulled at his own belt, loosening it and removing his slacks, kicking them to lay near his tank top. Meanwhile, Michael had continued to work his own pants down his legs, leaving them pooled around his ankles.Ā
Calum gave Michael a small smile, leaning in for a soft kiss before sinking to his knees on the wooden floor. Michael stared, green eyes wide as Calumās lips travelled up his pale thighs, fingers tracing circles over the soft cotton boxers. Finally, Calum removed the last piece of fabric concealing Michael from him. He licked his lips as he watched the hardened length spring forth from beneath the fabric that now pooled at Michaelās ankles.Ā
Michael whined, bucking into Calumās hand as he took hold of him, left arm wrapping around the backs of Michaelās thighs for support as he teasingly flicked his tongue against Michaelās tip. The salty taste of him made Calum lose what little composure and control he had planned to have, letting out a gentle moan as he ran his tongue over Michaelās tip again. āLike how I taste, Cal?ā Michael attempted to taunt, but his voice came out clearly breathless, Calumās lips wrapping around him like it was all they were ever meant for.
Calum easily took Michael in his mouth, slowly bobbing his head up and down the length, tongue working over it naturally. His hand stayed at the base of Michaelās cock, but when he pulled his mouth off of him to catch his breath for a moment, curiosity struck, removing his hand from Michael, who bucked his hips forward in protest, until Calumās hand cupped his balls, fingers fondling him and causing a higher moan to leave his mouth. Calum continued this new strategy for another moment, taking deep breaths before finally returning his mouth to Michaelās length, this time relaxing fully and taking him all the way down.Ā
Michael made a noise that almost sounded like a strangled scream, blunt fingernails digging into Calumās scalp as he searched for hair to grip. That thought alone was enough for Calum to consider growing his hair out again, solely for Michael. He continued his work, Michael now thrusting shallowly as Calum continued to bob his head. āPlease, Calā¦ā he whimpered out, hips jumping again as Calumās brown eyes met his green.
He held his head still, letting Michael grip the back of his head as he began to fuck Calumās mouth, Calum letting out a muffled moan at the thought of Michael using him like this. He unwound his left arm from behind Michaelās thighs now, pushing his boxers down enough to free his own length. He used his thumb to spread the arousal leaking from his tip over himself, trying not to move as he finally began to give his own cock the attention it had been aching for.Ā
His brown eyes closed, wanting desperately to cry out for Michael, an action made impossible by the other manās cock brushing the back of his throat. āLook so pretty like this, mouth full and...fuucckā¦ā Michael gasped, continuing to grip at the back of Calumās head with one hand, the fingers of the other digging into his shoulder.Ā
His thrusts quickened, and Calum could tell that Michael was chasing his orgasm now, readying himself. His whines of Calumās name grew higher in pitch and more frequent before he finally came apart, his thrusts shallow as he filled Calumās mouth. Calumās eyes fluttered, letting Michael work himself through, swallowing what he was given.Ā
Once he was finished he pulled out of Calumās mouth before collapsing on top of him, his breathing labored. Calum held him, letting him recover while he sat back on his heels. He pressed gentle kisses to Michaelās cheeks, neck, chest, fingers running through sweat-damp blonde hair. Michael stirred slightly, head lifting and resting against Calumās shoulder. āIād offer to return the favor,ā he slurred out, ābut Iām kinda gone...wow baby,ā fucked out mind testing a theory heād been building based off of how Calum reacted when he was complimented, both for work and on his talents.
Calum preened at the praise and pet name, giving more fuel to Michaelās theory. He sat Michael against the wall, tucking his own aching, still hard, member back into his boxers and getting back to his feet. He scooped Michael into his arms, carrying him to the bed and tucking blankets around his frame. He whined as Calum fixed his hair, arms working out of the blankets to reach for him. Calum smiled, taking a hand and kissing his knuckles, āJust gonna clean up the cottage and then we can snuggle. Iāll take up your offer for our morning shower. Would suggest taking the scenic route home if we werenāt expected at work.āĀ
Michael whined at the suggestive wink Calum gave him before he went to pick up the piles of clothes, tucking them into their respective suitcases before he picked up the plates from what had been his bed all weekend. He scraped the syrup soaked pancakes into the trash and set the plates in the sink to soak, bagging the extra pancakes and putting them in the fridge.Ā
Everything straightened up he made his way to the bed, flicking the lightswitch before he crawled under the sheets. Michael was already half asleep when Calum pulled him to his chest, laying on his back and staring at the ceiling. He smiled at the feeling of Michael shuffling his body closer, rubbing his shoulder as Michael flung his arm over him, āGānight Calum.ā he whispered, scared of breaking the moment, of waking up and being in separate beds again.
āGood night, Mike,ā Calum returned, smile on his face as Michaelās breathing slowed, letting himself drift off as well.
~~~~~~
Calum woke the next morning to Michaelās fingers trailing the ink on his chest. He smiled, it was rare that the morning after the conclusion of a case that heād be the one to wake first. Usually Michael would be just beginning the process of getting out of bed by the time Calum was out of the shower and dressed, blonde hair sticking up in all directions.Ā
Calum squeezed Michaelās shoulders, causing the blonde to look up at him, green eyes suddenly bashful. āCal,ā he started softly, fingers continuing to trace the patterns in his skin. āWe need to talk about last night.ā Calum raised a thick eyebrow, brown eyes concerned. āNot...not the kissing and the blowjob part, thatās still...thatās great, I love that and Iām still on for shower reparations if you are...the...the before that, before your...you called.ā
Calum smiled, relief filling his chest as he nodded, hand resting on top of Michaelās, before apprehension began to flutter back in. āYeah...we do. What are we gonna say about that? We do have to include...him, in the report.ā
Michael sighed, glancing at Calumās hand atop his before he said, āIām gonna give you some of the files on Scully when we get back. Need you to know why you canāt take that thing out of you. I donāt think I could watch you go through that, especially not now. I wanna do everything in my power to find out why that happened to you, if itās what led to you being here, working with me. And Iām going to make sure they donāt try and take you again, not when Iām here.ā Calum shushed him, reaching out to rub his cheek gently. āHey, itās ok, I trust you, right? Iāll do whatever you say is best. And no need to put all that on yourself, Iām here, partners, right?ā
Michael smiled, nodding and leaning up and pressing a kiss to Calumās lips, āPartners.ā he affirmed with a smile.
A stormy night, a dimly lit tavern and a hidden path that led to a secret inn brought Michael and Calum together for a moment in time. Just long enough to explore uncharted territories of each other; just long enough for Calum to find bliss and then watch it all sail away in new morning light. A pirate au.
