So, using this as my post all the random scrapfic week :)
This one is a little special because it is a Completely Unauthorized Spinoff of one of the best, classic OUAT fics, Somewhere, Someone Must Know the Ending, by Maleficently, with random iCarly cameos (donât ask, and yes i watched iCarly when i was 25 and injured)
When Emma came into the diner on her break, it was empty, save for a student on her computer eating chili fries in one corner, and Ruby, leaning on the counter and gazing absently out the window. Â She didnât look up when the door chimed, and her expression was pensive. Â She gave a low, resigned sigh.
Emma frowned and wrinkled her nose at her. Â She thumped the counter to get her attention. Â âArenât you supposed to be working?â
Ruby jumped up and gave her one of her broad grins, but it was a little less joyful than usual. Â âHey, Emma. Â What can I get you?â
Emma glanced around. Â The place really was deserted. Â âBear claw, coffee and some conversation?â
Ruby slid the confectionary and coffee across the table and herself into the opposite booth. Â âWhatâs up with you? Â How are things with your mayor?â
âGood,â Emma smiled, still feeling a little like it was impossibly good, clean, in a way it hadnât been before, and she was so, so grateful that Gold was not bothering them anymore. Â âAnd how are things with you? Â What was that sigh you gave looking out the window?â
Ruby ducked her head, blushing a little. Â âNothing.â
âCome on. Â I know that look. Â What is it, now? Â Lovesick?â
âLovesick?â Ruby grinned. Â âReally?â
âIt looked kind of lovesick.â
âNaw, itâs justâŚâ  Ruby tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. âOkay, I have to tell someone.â  Her eyes were lit and eager.  âAnd youâre all right.  Just keep it on the down low for now, okay?â
Emmaâs eyes widened. Â What was this? Â âSure.â
âSo, you know how your wife got Belle French back to town last week?â
âI was kind of there.â
âWell, she stayed here overnight.â
âSheâs not really talking to her dad.â
Emma stared at her.  That sounded⌠in the know.  âWere you two friends, before she left?â
Ruby blinked. Â âNo. Â Sheâs a couple of years older than me. Â We werenât even in high school at the same time.â
âAh.â Emma sipped her coffee and raised an eyebrow at Ruby. Â âWhere is this going, exactly? Â Like, she left a dead rat in the bed, or you shagged herââ
Ruby grinned, her color heightening in a flush.
âOh my god. Â You shagged her. Â She was here for one night.â
âShe was really sweet. Â And so messed up about what your wife had her do at the meeting. Â I mixed her some drinks, and we talked, and she started to cry, so I took her up to her room, and, well, one thing led to another.â Â Ruby smiled again, a little wistfully. Â âIt was really nice.â
Emma laughed. Â âOne thing led to another, did it?â
âShe kissed me back.â
âAnd⌠what?  Youâre long distancing it now?â
Ruby looked surprised. Â âWhat? Â No. Â It was just one night. Â She kissed me goodbye in the morning and caught her cab to the airport. Â I didnât even get her number.â
âAnd youâre⌠still staring out the window and sighing about it?â That was not normal one-night-stand behavior.  To be honest, it wasnât normal Ruby behavior.
âI liked her. Â The sex was nice, especially for after a crying jag and with someone new, but I just liked talking to her too. Â I wish I hadnât, well, missed my chance.â
Emmaâs eyebrows shot up. Â âYouâre not still after the âreal thingâ are you? Â Because chasing it is kind of looking for trouble.â
Ruby blinked. Â âI just meant that I missed my chance to be friends with her.â
âOh,â Emma said. Â But she didnât totally believe her.
âSo, um, I saw Ruby today.â
Regina turned, half undressed for bed, and Emma forgot what she had been going to say. Â âYes, on what days donât you see her?â
Emma scrambled for words and they tumbled out in a muddle. Â âYou know she hooked up with Belle French the night she was here?â
Regina blinked. Â âWhat? Â Really?â
Emma grinned, then realized that she hadnât been supposed to tell. Â âUm, itâs on the downlow, of course.â
âAnd, well, she doesnât have any contact info, obviously.  And sheâs looking a little lovesick latelyâŚâ
Hello dear, how are you? Â I do hope that your trip was not too traumatic and that you are doing well. Â Thank you again for your assistance. Things have been quiet here recently, all thanks to your intervention.
Well, all quiet except for the long lingering sighs that our Ruby Lucas is sighing while gazing longingly out the window of the not so fine dining establishment in the center of town. Â You left a swathe of broken hearts behind you, apparently, dear. Â Emma, who can only be considered soft hearted, has inquired if you might be interested in sharing your email address with the poor girl. Â It is up to you. Â She has no expectation of it.
âEmma!â Ruby was grinning wider than Emmaâd ever seen her, her floppy red tam bouncing. Â âShe wrote me! Â How did she get my email?!â
Emma smiled. Â âAwesome.â she said, and kept her secrets to herself. âYou guys going out now?â
âNo.â Ruby batted her arm and then hugged her. âFriends.â
âMaybe youâre a little too happy to just be wanting to be friends.â
âWell, she was pretty hot in bed.â  Ruby ducked her head.  âBut I just⌠liked her.â
âYou know Iâve got your back. Â If sheâs what you want, you deserve it.â
Ruby hid her face. Â âGod, weâre just emailing. Â This could go nowhere.â
Itâs not like Iâve got anything going for me here. Â I love Storybrooke, but I know Iâm just going to be working in a diner for the rest of my life. Â I just wanted to look beyond that, see something different, exciting. Â Have something real.
I know what you mean. Â I didnât want to be chased out, didnât want to have to go into hiding, but I had to. Â And I was about ten miles out of town when I looked at my new papers, my new self, and the new world out of the window, and realized that this was what I had said I wanted. Â I wanted adventure and change. Â It wasnât as unambiguously wonderful as I had expected, but nothing ever is. Â It was my chance to see a new world, and I made myself appreciate it. Â But it was hard to be alone, have no one know who I am. Â Itâs funny, even now I canât really explain, and if I do, they wonât understand. Â You do, though. Â
I canât say I understand at all what it must have felt like. Â Gold scared the shit out of me, and he wasnât even targeting my family. Â But I do know who you are, and you can tell me anything. Â And, wow, this is going to be the most embarrassing thing Iâve said, but youâre kind of the bravest person Iâve ever met. Â I canât say I wouldnât have curled up into a ball and cried if I had to leave town like that. And realizing that it was an adventure? Â Making myself act like it was something I was supposed to enjoy? Â Itâs amazing.
âGranny? Um, Iâm going to Seattle.â
Granny stared at her. Â Emma stared at her. Â âYouâre going to visit Belle French?â
Ruby flushed. Â âShe said I could crash with her and, you know, see a new city. Â Sheâd take me around, let me meet her friends.â
Emma grinned. Â âGet you laid?â
Granny smacked her in the back of the head with a towel.
âWeâre just friends!â Â
Ruby spotted the young woman waiting by the baggage claim and froze. Heels and a pencil skirt and a tweed jacket, her hair up in a bun, she was way prettier and way classier than Ruby had remembered and it made her panic. Â But then Belle looked over, caught sight of her and smiled. Â Ruby bolted to her and swept her up in a hug. Â Belle clung to her neck and grinned up at her.
âOh, itâs so good to see you.  I⌠forgot how tall you were.â
Ruby laughed, carefully setting her down. Â âI forgot how pretty you were. Â Um, and your hair. Â Itâs darker.â
Belle gave a few shy nods. Â âA little change.â Â She fingered the red streaks. Â âI like these.â
âI like you.â Â And Ruby blushed.
Belle looked up at her, arms still looped around her neck.  âIâm such a⌠hypocrite, arenât I?â  She smiled.  âWeâre just friends, I can tell you anything, youâre just coming for sightseeing.  I told everyone, very firmly, no, that you werenât my girlfriend from back home.  But I kind of really want to kiss you right now.â
âI would be⌠totally okay with that.â
The tension was high as Belle showed Ruby around her apartment â two bedrooms, no roommate. Â âItâs a little more than I can comfortably afford. Â But Iâm all right.â Â They ate leftover Chinese around the coffee table, and drank the half bottle of wine Belle had in her fridge. Â And then Ruby yawned, and Belle went all flustered about getting her in bed.
âIâm not that tired,â Ruby said with a hand on her shoulder.  Belle turned and looked up at her.  âAnd⌠maybe you donât need to make up the other bed?â
âOh?â Belle bit her lip. Â âThat kind of not tired?â
Belle slung her arms around Rubyâs shoulders. Â âI think I could lie down myself. Â Take me to bed, my knight.â
Ruby laughed and picked her up and carried her off to bed.
The bed never got made up.
âSoooo,â Emma said when she finally got Ruby on the phone. Â âHaving a good time?â
âYes,â Ruby half growled, then laughed. Â âGod, yes.â
âAnd have you taken her to bed again yet?â
âLets just say, my sheets have not been slept on yet.â
âRuby! You dog! Â First night!â
âHey! Sheâs the one who kissed me in the baggage claim!â
âNice.â Emmaâs voice went soft. Â âWhenâs your ticket back for?â
âUm, well, Granny said I could be gone for a month before she stopped holding my job.  So I just⌠made an open ended return.â
âOh,â Emma said.  âSo youâre⌠hanging out.â
âI figure sheâll get sick of me eventually and Iâll take the hint and get out. Â But itâs been good so far. Â Sheâs taken me to her work, and around Seattle, and to the lake. Â And Iâve read a lot of books. Â It feels like my first vacation in years.â
âGreat sex, calm rainy days and excellent novels.â
âEh, sounds like a dream.â
âWho are you talking to?â came a voice from the other end of the phone.
âAh, so all of Storybrooke knows just where youâre getting all your great sex?â
âHey! Emmaâs discreet!â
âMhm. Because Emma being discreet is why Regina gave me your email address.â
âSheâs my wife,â Emma protested. Â âIâm legally obligated to give her all the gossip I think sheâd be interested in.â
Emma could hear Belle laugh. Â âIâll look forward to her email then.â
âSo this is⌠the secret not-girlfriend from home,â inquired Carly.
Belle laughed, ducking her head and then casting Ruby a shy, pleased glance. Â Ruby just grinned back at her.
âReally? Because hot mama, if youâre not hitting that, Iâm getting in line,â added Sam. Â Carly thwacked her arm.
Belle curled her arm around Rubyâs possessively. Â âDonât you dare. Iâve got dibs on this one.â
Sam grinned. Â âDibs or dibs?â she asked with a wiggle of her eyebrows. Â âWe want details, girl.â
The drinking ended with quick desperate sex in the bathroom, Belle hoisted up to sit on the sink, Ruby gasping into her neck.
âNot the secret girlfriend from home my ass.â
âSpencerâs diner needs a manager. Â Heâs hopeless, and everyone else has no idea how to make things run properly!â Carly complained. Â âHeâs going to lose all his money and the business if he doesnât get someone involved who knows what theyâre doing. Â And soon.â
Ruby frowned.  âI know Iâm only here for a visit, but I could totally help him out if he needed it.  It would⌠give me something to do during the day.  And itâs not like I donât have the experience.â
Belle looked at her, studying her for a long moment. Â Ruby waited for the question â how long are you going to stay â but it didnât come.
âSo, um, Spencer kind of fell on his knees and thanked me, and cut me a paycheck. Â So, Iâve been freeloading like crazy. Â Mind if I pick up half of the rent?â
Belle stared at her. Â âYouâve been freeloading? Â Just coming in here, tidying up after me, giving me amazing sex every night, picking me up and cooking and going shopping and now youâre paying the rent, and you just came to do touristy things.â
âI came to see you,â Ruby admitted. Â Seattle was not part of the equation. Â It could have been hell, and she still would have come running like a whistled-for dog when she got the okay. Â She knew that now. Â She knew why now.
âAnd you want to pay half the rent?â
Ruby hesitated.  âI⌠want to pay half the rent, forever.  Spencer offered me a permanent position, and I want to take it, but itâs not enough right now to get my own place.  And seriously, I donât want my own place.  I like Seattle, but Iâm here because of you, and I want to stay because of you.  So, a couple of months?  A trial run?  Iâll pick up half the tabs, and maybe actually sleep in my own bed, but⌠what do you say to a roommate?â
Belle stared at her, unspeaking.
âIf thatâs a noâŚâ
âNo. No.  Itâs not a no.  Itâs a⌠I donât know.  Yes? Yes, please?â
Ruby grinned like an idiot. Â âSeriously?â
âI never wanted you to go.  Iâve been trying so hard to not think about what Iâd do when you left.â  Belle quickly swiped the back of her arm over her eyes.  âItâs been⌠so much less lonely with you.  I feel like Iâm really here, really alive.  And, god, please donât feel like you have to sleep in your own bed.â
Ruby just smiled. Â âYou donât mind me sprawled all over you?â
âWe could get a⌠bigger bed?â Â
Belle turned red. Â She ducked her head. Â âI might have been thinking about this for a while.â
Ruby caught her up and pulled her in, squashing her against her chest in a hug.  âGot to call Granny. Got to call Emma.â  She pushed her back and looked at her.  âGirlfriend?  I mean, I said roommate, and I donât want to assume or anything, but, umâŚâ
âYes! Yes, Iâll be your girlfriend.â  Belle flushed.  âIs it all right if we make it⌠retroactive to the beginning of summer? Because otherwise that was a lot of casual sex, and I donât really know if I can talk about it if people ask me how we got together.â
Ruby laughed. Â âYou canât say, âI went to back to my hometown and cried all over my waitress, who proceeded, very insensitively, to kiss me, and then we hooked up. Â And then she stalked me all the way to Seattle and moved into my house, at which point we started hooking up a lot. Â And then she told me that she wasnât leaving and so I figured Iâd better let her be my girlfriend, since there was no way I was getting rid of her without a crowbar.â
âI canât say that!â
âIt is not!â  Belle smiled slyly at her.  âI met this girl, you see, when I was really upset.  And she took care of me and made me feel better.  Then we became friends over email.  And when she came to visit, I realized that I was kind of mad about her, and kissed her in the baggage claim.  And now⌠sheâs mine.â
âI like that,â Ruby said. Â âLetâs just add a âwith sexâ to the âmade me feel betterâ and weâre good to go.â
Belle smacked her arm lightly. Â âYouâre the worst. Â But fine. Â I will accept the emendation.â
