faith fears vulnerability. she's constantly erecting walls. she keeps everyone, even her friends/colleagues, at arm's length. there are probably things evelyn, jeremy and amanda- her closest family- don't even know about her. and then she quickly fell into what should have been the perfect relationship, with a confident, successful guy who provided her with luxury, attention, gifts, and more. however, neither of them went into the relationship fully honest about themselves. malcolm was, of course, lying about several things- including his criminal activity- and faith gave him a fake name, fake job, and scant backstory. they knew nothing real about each other, each only seeing the façades the other wanted them to see. faith seemed to realize almost immediately that her relationship with malcolm was doomed once his true identity was revealed to her. while she clung to the fantasy of 'what if' during her time undercover with malcolm, deep down inside, she knew they would always end up where they ended up- with malcolm being walked off in cuffs and faith left alone with nothing but her memories of their short time together.
when compared to malcolm, ormewood offers nothing close as a potential love interest except honesty and vulnerability- the two things faith didn't have with malcolm. there's also a sense of stability and home with their living situation, and the way faith has been integrated into the family by ormewood and the kids. if faith realizes honesty, vulnerability, and stability are things she wants in a relationship she might soon realize she has that already with ormewood. what would she do with that knowledge? right now, we just don't know. she could reject it for any number of reasons. but if those qualities are things she's looking for in a potential partner, she doesn't have to look very far to find someone who fulfills them.

i'm starting to think we're revisiting malcolm and faith/malcolm in 4x14 (and possibly 4x15, the episode where iantha said faith "rediscovers" her passion for the job, or something along those lines).
in 4x10 we see malcolm has been making attempts to reach out to faith from jail. and not only is he making attempts to reach out, he's been sending her letters for at least a little while (there are four or five unread, unopened letters in her drawer).
faith has become disillusioned with the job since her experience with malcolm and his arrest. she no longer seems to know if what she does is worth the personal cost. while both amanda and will have accepted the cost to their personal lives, faith isn't sure she can keep doing it anymore.

faith's disillusionment is absolutely, 100% wrapped up in her relationship with malcolm. several of the recent cases the APD/GBI has dealt with have all had threads of injustice or unfairness woven through them, and this all started with malcolm, for faith. in 4x06, she tells malcolm as she holds her gun on him that even if they'd been completely honest with each other from the start, it was always going to end the way it did because malcolm robs banks and faith arrests people who rob banks. however, it's easier to say that than it is to accept or believe it.
faith's been heartbroken since losing malcolm, and i'm sure his letters- unread as they are- haven't been helping her move past it.
so, faith is going through an existential crisis and malcolm and her relationship with him got the ball rolling. i think she needs to see him again, confront him, and get closure or decide end things on her own terms so she can begin to really move on.
right now i think i would like to see it happen like this: faith finally gives in and reads one of malcolm's letters. in it he asks her to come visit him in jail because he wants her to offer testimony as a character witness to help him secure a lenient sentence. faith distracts herself from her heartbreak- and the truth that there's probably not much she can say or do to help malcolm get a lighter sentence- by trying to find a loophole. faith asks ormewood to contact joanne and see if she can help with malcolm's case. (this way not only does malcolm, faith's catalyst, come back but ormewood's catalyst comes back in the same episode! fun!)
eventually joanne has to pull ormewood aside and be like "i'm sorry but there are no loopholes for me to exploit. the case YOU built against malcolm is airtight." ormewood and joanne butt heads about this a little bit, in which maybe joanne questions "why are you really going this hard for a criminal who definitely did all the crime he's been accused of" and they clash over their ethics or something (them clashing over ethics might work better if it's amanda's case that brings her back into ormewood's orbit and puts her on a path to intersect with faith but i'm not picky).
ormewood then has to deliver the news to faith that there's nothing he or joanne can do to help malcolm and of course she's devastated (maybe even takes it out on ormewood a little bit in a way she didn't after he arrested malcolm, perhaps) but it becomes clear that there's something more deeply personal to her upset than her doomed relationship with malcolm or a failure to find a loophole so malcolm can get a lighter sentence. maybe ormewood gets a taste of her existential job-related crisis and the toll their recent cases have taken on her. maybe she let malcolm charm her again to bring her out and she feels silly, or she let herself believe they had a second chance at a future together. or maybe she's upset because she knew there was no hope for malcolm's case but thought if she could "win" and get him a light sentence, she might feel absolved of the role she played in his arrest. or something. anyway faith should get emotional and fight against it, ormewood should also get emotional seeing faith getting emotional and fighting against it (and struggle himself to keep his emotions in check because he needs to be a pillar of strength for faith in her moment of emotional vulnerability, and struggle with his insecurity around his own vulnerability and finding a way to put it aside to comfort faith) and she then cries on him. into his neck, on his chest, on his shoulder, i don't care. as long as she cries on him and he soothes her while fighting against his own emotions. this way we get faith getting some closure on that relationship AND we get faith and ormewood finally addressing the malcolm of it all. (and joanne should observe it all from the doorway to ormewood's office.)
anyway.
tl;dr - malcolm and faith's relationship with him is at the center of her existential crisis. her present crisis might not be solely about malcolm/that relationship but it's what caused the first cracks to start showing. she needs to address him and his letters, and cut that relationship off completely or find closure in some other way so she can begin moving on from him/it and deal with her feelings about her job.
