I was in the shower earlier thinking about how much shorter my showers have been since fully embracing radical feminism in my personal life (rather than just believing in it, reading theory, raising awareness, etc). My ‘everything shower’ now means I wash both my hair and my body; no 20 minutes spent shaving, no harsh exfoliants or creams, no scrubbing my skin raw to exfoliate and get it smooth, no unnecessary products. I used to take 60-90 minutes for an ‘everything shower’. Now I take 20 (my hair is long as fuck don’t come for me), and I’m happier and more comfortable in my skin and more confident.

Why is it so hard for some women to say “I know makeup is oppressive but I still do it because it makes my life easier” and instead try to claim that “makeup can be empowering.” It’s so much more respectable to recognize the reality of it even if you still do it.
Idk how some feminists can still be confused about how and why makeup is harmful when it’s like a main component of perfomed femininity ( and you can just take general analysis of femininity and apply it to makeup) but also a more straightforward example:
women apologizing in videos for not having their makeup on and also some woman casually saying stuff like “you’re not ugly you’re just poor/not wearing makeup” which pretty much gives away what feminimity (wearing makeup) really is all about behind a bunch of excuses.
Like just looking at the title of this video and while I haven’t watched it the fact that this is something so common that it’s a conversation in itself because of how deep rooted this mentality is amongst women (and very casually which is key) just speaks for itself. Makeup does distort women’s self image but yeah it’s not that deep how can makeup oppress women. 🤪

Me: I don't, personally, really like makeup. I don't, personally, like wearing it because it feels uncomfortable to me. In the past, I felt societal pressure to wear it at school and work, and I wish it didn't feel like a requirement to be treated normally as a person and a professional. I've noticed I actually have lower self-esteem and more self-image issues when I wear it regularly, so I stopped wearing it. I am, personally, happier without it :)

genuine question:
i'm in a bit of a conundrum. i'm a radfem, and i believe makeup is harmful to women, takes hi their time and money, and is a vastly unhealthy way to view your body.
i'm also goth.
so, i'm anti-makeup for many many reasons, but the subculture i'm a part of, the elaborate makeup is a very large part of. and truly, i think goth makeup rocks. i personally don't think it's as unhealthy as other forms of makeup. i do think there's a difference between contouring and lashes and lip liner to make you look identical to what men want, identical to other women, and makes you look, by mens' definition, "sexy", and the elaborate goth makeup that goth girls like to do.

granted, there are goth fetishists, but typically goth makeup isn't done for male approval.
really all i do for my goth makeup is heavy eyeliner, sometimes designs like that spider web, if i feel like it some black eyeshadow, and maybe black lipstick (that seems like more when i write it out, but it really only takes me 10 mins, 2 if i only do eyeliner).
my question is, should i stop doing goth makeup? and if goth makeup is also unhealthy, can we change the narrative that you need to wear it to be goth?
We don't talk enough about how when it's expected that people have a full face of makeup on at every moment, that becomes the norm. The baseline. That subconsciously, you will see someone without anything on and think it's plain, or worse, ugly
I feel contempt towards makeup as a waste of time and money. It’s a feeling of advertising to the world there’s something wrong with how I look and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with how I look.
