Going to the Texas Street Makers Fair in downtown Shreveport today! :D
Out of the many stalls and projects around the Mini Maker’s Fair at this year’s Brighton Digital Festival, the most ambitious must be the 3D printing of Alan Turing’s head.
“It’s something we hope to have finished by the end of the day,” said Ian Stratford of Thames Valley Rep Rap,”although I feel we may be pushed for time.”
Stratford helped found the group around a year ago as a community for other aspiring 3D printers to share ideas and know-how. Since then they have gained more experience and are printing parts for new printers from the printers they had already built and as well as hoping to turn the group into a profit-making business.
“The buzz phrase for this is a “crowd source manufacturing process’,” continued Stratford,”Many of the initial patents are expiring so it is becoming much simpler and more accessible.”
When asked where the technology will be in five years’ time, Stratford said that products for retail are currently limited to shoes and jewellery but the open source nature of the technology means more people will be involved.
The model of Alan Turing on the other hand will hopefully take considerably less than five years and we’ll be back to give you updates later in the day.
