Navigating Makeademia Course Tumblr

Welcome to the course blog for the Summer 2018 section of Advanced Exposition at the University of Florida! This course is designed to practice public writing, digital rhetoric, and multimodal composition. All of the required course assignments and readings are in the schedule. In addition, all required course tools are free for students, including Canva, Arduino, Instructables, Cura, and Tumblr. Assignment prompts and student responses are all tagged and searchable for future educational purposes.

(This course Tumblr is designed as a closed, secondary group blog, meaning that students need a Tumblr account and an invitation to access, and no external replying is allowed.)

How to number the sides of your flexagon!

For this assignment, please reflect on this course. This is a lengthy (400+ words) post, so I have provided several questions as generative prompts for critical reflection. Feel free to add images, GIFs, or other multimedia content to support your reflections.

What did I learn from this class? What did I learn about my reading habits? What did I learn about drafting and revising? What did I learn about making my writing public? What skills did I learn or refine? What strengths did I rely on? What did I find most challenging about Advanced Exposition? What opportunities for growth did I identify that I could continue improving beyond this semester? What was I expecting from this class and how did this class meet or subvert my expectations? How did I feel about the variation of class: maker projects, reading discussions, special collections field trips, style exercises, small group brainstorming, etc.? What did I learn in the process of prototyping with cheap materials like Playdoh, paper, and DIY instruments? What was most memorable or interesting from the class readings? What was my favorite project and why? What did I take away from the course? What resources have I gained? Are there any projects I started that I want to expand on? Have my ideas of writing, humanities, academia changed as a result of this class, and if so, in what way?

For this assignment, you will write a 700 word script for a vlog or podcast. (If you type words on the screen for your vlog, those words also count towards the word count, so I encourage video over audio.) You will want to create title images for your video in Canva (or logos for your podcast). You will demonstrate your ability to compare and contrast on a topic about music.

Suggested software for making your vlog post: iMovie, Premiere Pro, After Effects. Suggested software for podcast: GarageBand, Audacity. You may want to upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo so it's easier to post. Plan for uploading to take time. Use your access to UF Lynda.com as a resource.

Some suggestions for topics are listed below. As always, please post your project to Tumblr, and then post a link to Canvas.

What are you a super-fan of? Is it a TV show, movie, sports team, literary author, musical artist, beauty vlogger, Insta-photographer, Twitter bot, toy series, tech company, pastry chef? For this assignment you will design several infographics to explain aspects of your fandom to a public audience. Consider what information might need to be conveyed to a newcomer and what formats of information go well in infographics: timelines, quote collections, character assessments, etc. It is very important that you find that balance between the word count and including enough images to support your text. I recommend separating the assignment into four different 250 word infographics, but how you achieve the word count is up to you. Canva and Piktochart are recommended by previous students.
