Have you ever considering writing anything Fruits Basket?
Nah, too hard for me to get the voices right. Which I think is partly because I associate it so strongly with Japanese culture that itās hard for me to feel like I could do it justice in English. Which is funny, because I never had that problem with Hana Yori Dango, which I used to write for. But I think itās partly because the speech of the characters in Fruits Basket has a lot to do with how Japanese works as a language (Tohru and Arisa especially), that I have a hard time converting that in my head to English. If that makes sense. ^_^;;
I can't put into words how excited I am that you're writing the Fallout AU. Also, your newest chapter of Diverged killed me. I can't wait to see Aeric experience rage.
Hee, yay! I hope my Fallout AU fic doesnāt disappoint!
And Iām so happy you enjoyed the new chapter! I was actually a little insecure about it when I posted it (I feel nervous about writing smut especially, ha), so Iām glad everyone seems to like it. :)
slugette replied to your post āOkay, Iām kinda scared Bioware will be idiots and make Dorian and the...ā
i think Dorian would have stayed? "just a little longer?"
Yes, I think thatās a definite possibility too! But I guess Iām trying to speculate how Bioware themselves would handle the romance. My two feelings on what Dorian would actuallyĀ do are that he would either keep putting it off until he stayed basically forever, or that he left for Tevinter as he said he would, but kept up the relationship as a long distance one. (But temporarily, where the Inquisitor joins him in Tevinter later.) But what Bioware does with the relationship is where Iām a little scared, because I donāt put it past them to mess it up somehow. (Again, scarred by Thane - their handling of very sweet romances makes me nervous now, lol.)

and then Dorian finds out the mark is killing Aeric
YES! Which I am also okay with having someĀ āmy loveās life is in danger and I donāt know what to doā angst, so long as it has a happy resolution. I really hope that, if Bioware is going to do that sort of thing, that they give us at least one scene where the LI talks to the Inquisitor about it and expresses those fears of losing them. And then it turns out okay - with or without the Inquisitorās left hand intact - and then they have the option to run away together. The sappier the better!
I basically want my personal canon to be more or less canon. IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK BIOWARE??? Lol.

Hmm... Does baking count? I donāt know whatās theĀ ābestā, but Iām really proud of the birthday cakes I make for my family. My favorite recently was the Inside-Out Samoa Cake I invented for my husband, which was chocolate cake with vanilla swiss buttercream and caramel and toasted coconut filling. I kinda crave it sometimes, lol.
PRIMROSE:Favorite kind of soup?
My favorite is a curry-flavored one that I usually make with sausage, sweet potato, and vegetables. I feel like I posted the recipe at some point, *looks for it*... Oh, here it is!
AZALEA:Whatās a movie you cried while watching?
I donāt often cry at movies, but I do cry sometimes during the beginning of Up. And recently I cried at the end of Tinkerbell and the Legend of the NeverBeast, lol. Kidsā movies have been really getting to me lately. ^_^;;
I'm trying to write a complex character, and I really admire your OC's. Do you have any tips for someone who wants to build on making their character believable and realistic?
Oh, thank you! When creating believable and complex characters, you always want to be askingĀ āwhyā and delve deeper and deeper. I donāt know if I would recommend coming up with a set number ofĀ āstrengthsā orĀ āweaknessesā, because I feel that personality traits canāt be defined so succinctly, but I think if you have a basic idea of what kind of personality a character has, and what their core values and character traits are, then you can start asking yourself questions and build from there.
Letās take Aeric, for example. When I started him off, I pictured him as gruff and quiet and blunt and practical, but with a soft spot for a certain Tevinter mage. ;) But that was all I had at the beginning. And I gave him the History Buff perk (I forget what itās actually called), so he really loves history. When I started to develop him beyond what I had of him in the game, I started to ask why. Okay, he loves history, but why? Well, he used to read a lot of history as a kid. Great, but why did he read so much, especially about societies outside of the Dalish? Because he was a sort of outcast as a child, needed something to pass the time while the other children were playing without him, and wanted an escape from the loneliness he felt amongst the Dalish. Why was he an outcast? Because he didnāt like to talk, and people thought that was strange. Why doesnāt he like to talk? He doesnāt know; itās not anxiety or shyness really. He just doesnāt like talking.
From that one trait - Aeric loves history - we already have a great wealth of backstory and depth that we didnāt have before, simply because we kept delving deeper into why he is who he is. Not everything has to have a reason. People like things sometimes without there being any particular cause or backstory for it. Aeric loves honey but hates other sweets, for instance, simply because honey tastes good to him, but other sweets donāt. But you should know that fact.
You donāt have to know everythingĀ about your character. But whenever you introduce a character trait or preference or opinion about this character, it would be good to know why that is, if thereās a reason for it. That way, when you present these traits to your readers/followers/fellow RPers/etc, you can include some of that nuance into it, even if you donāt include everything you know about your character about the subject. Aeric loves history, and itās comforting to him and exciting, because itās like an old friend. When I write about him talking about history, I hope to convey some of that excitement and warmth that he feels, even if I donāt get into the whole backstory of his childhood in that particular moment. Even without knowing why, the reader will hopefully understand the importance of this trait to this character through the word choices you use to convey their feelings about that trait.
Also, donāt be afraid to be contradictory when creating your characters, because real people are contradictory too. People lie to themselves or donāt understand aspects of themselves or deny things about themselves they donāt want to deal with. However, as a writer, you have to know that people are being contradictory when they display such behavior, so that it doesnāt feel like a retcon. If people are contradictory, theyāre consistently so. Dorianās not a character of my creation, but I use him a lot, so Iāll have him as an example. Dorian acts very self-confident and assured. He acts like he loves himself. But in reality, thereās a lot that Dorian doesnāt like about himself, and all that bravado hides a lot of insecurities, particularly when it comes to relationships. Dorian is a hopeless romantic, but he pretends not to be. He is a very contradictory character most of the time, but he is very consistent about what heās contradictory about. He saysĀ āFine, have it your wayā when entering a relationship with the Inquisitor without it starting off with sex, when he really meansĀ āOMG YES, this is what Iāve always wanted!ā. He saysĀ āYouāre terribly dull and I hate youā when he really meansĀ āYou are amazing, and I love you.ā
In my fics, part of his growth is his coming to terms with these contradictions and these feelings heās been avoiding because theyāre difficult and messy. When I have him realize his love for Aeric, he starts to become a much more honest character, and those contradictions - while sometimes still here - start to become fewer and far between. Your characters can grow and change - and really should, given that it would make for a boring story and character if they didnāt - but it doesnāt have to be all at once, even if it is a big change for them. Even then, just because one thing changes about them doesnāt mean everything does, and almost always, there are a few core traits that remain the same throughout. That way, when a reader looks at a character, they can say without a doubt,Ā āYes, that is absolutely something that they would do.ā
Thereās probably a lot more I could say about the subject, but Iāll stop there since itās already ungodly long. I find that character sheets help when developing characters, as well as curious anons who ask questions about your character. ;) Let me know if you have any other questions, and I hope this helps!
