The Pu'u O Hulu Kai hike, also known as the Maili Pillbox hike, was one of our favorite dog friendly hikes on Oahu. It was a relatively easy hike with phenomenal views at the top. Because this was on the west side of Oahu in Waianae, there weren't many tourists, so we were able to hang out on the pillboxes by ourselves. The pink pillbox was painted as a sign of strength, hope, and faith. A hiker put 8 prayer boxes near the pillboxes in 2013. When he later went back to check on them a year later, there were many prayer requests for family and friends coping with cancer or struggling with the loss of loved ones. He decided to organize a hike to raise awareness for cancer. The hike was named 1st Annual Maili Pillbox Hike for Cancer Awareness which had been scheduled for October 18, 2015. Subsequently, one of the bunkers was painted pink. The wall inside is a tribute to write names of survivors, fighters, and even those who lost their battle to all types of cancer. It now has nearly 250 names of cancer fighters and survivors. #oahu #honolulu #hawaii #mailipillbox #puuohulukai #optoutside #kelwinadventures #oahuhawaii #waianae (at Maili Pillbox) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsmfiN8gmy2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3hqimtx0t9zs
