Canada Post on Thursday said it is beginning discussions with 13 communities that will see their mail delivery service converted to community mailboxes later this year, kicking off what it says will be a five-year national conversion plan. The mail carrier is fully shifting away from door-to-door delivery as part of a multi-year business overhaul that it hopes will stop years of financial losses. While the company says a majority of Canadians are already part of centralized delivery systems like community mailboxes, about four million addresses still receive their mail and parcels at their doorsteps. Canada Post said in a news release that, after meetings with union officials, it is now in talks to begin converting roughly 136,000 of those addresses to community mailboxes in late 2026 and early 2027.

The United States Postal Service is in need of help!

The USPS helps the poor and those in more rural, isolated areas communicate in an easier and cheaper manner. Due to the virus, they are in need of dire assistance and have stated that they may run out of funding by September or October.

The postal service employs over 600,000 people and, currently, the government has not included them in the coronavirus stimulus and has instead forced them to take a loan (as of yesterday it seems the loan has still not been approved by The White House.) Many lawmakers wish to turn the postal system into a privatized business. By doing so, prices can easily be raised on postal services and cause many lower class people to no longer have access to the right of communication. In rural areas where there is little demand for high-priced services, mail will no longer be easily available and this will hurt people in small, low-income communities.

I use the USPS regularly because it’s cheap and useful for myself and many others; the postal service is literally in our constitution! In order to keep it this way it’s up to us to help if we can because clearly our government does not care. I recently bought a couple sets of stamps through the USPS website one has dragons and the other has frogs. You don’t even have to leave your home to order them if you have internet access! They have a lot of great, fun designs like dinosaurs, flowers, historic figures, and animals to choose from and some designs give you 16 basic forever stamps for under 10 dollars. They also have cards, envelopes, and shipping supplies available to buy.

People like Trump and Jeff Bezos are capitalists who want to privatize mail services so they can continue to squeeze money out of those who do not have it because of greed and because they wish to suppress voters by not allowing them to easily mail in their votes instead of visiting polling stations. I believe communication is a right and that we should support the USPS any way we can. Buy some fun stamps if you can, and if you can’t, spread the word so others can learn more about this important issue!
