Loose Meat Sandwich

Loose meat sandwiches are popular in Iowa and some nearby Midwestern states.  It is also called a Maid-Rite or Tavern sandwich due to the restaurants these sandwiches were created in.  They are made of seasoned ground meat but are not formed into a burger shape and are not like Sloppy Joes as they have no tomato sauce.

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef (chuck is good)

1 onion, chopped

1/2 teaspoon beef bouillon powder

1/2 cup water

1 ½ tablespoons steak sauce

1 ½ tablespoons soy sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns

Optional Toppings:

Minced onions

Sliced Pickles

Directions:

Sauté beef and onions and stir until cooked and beef is crumbled.  Drain excess fat.  Return to cooking. Combine the next 4 ingredients in a small bowl and blend.  Add to the beef mixture and stir.  Simmer for 30 minutes stirring occasionally. Add salt and pepper to your taste.  Scoop onto buns and add toppings if desired.
