Yeahhhh broadchurch season 2 is a travesty I'm still trying to forget about a year later
let us now list some ways in which it is a travesty:
- absolutely every plot point would have been avoided if anybody had used their words even once
- writers repeatedly misunderstood how the legal system works. I’m not even FROM the UK and I know this
- writers repeatedly misunderstood that when young girl children are murdered it is not a tragedy for their murderers or, in fact, anyone else as much as it is A TRAGEDY ON ITS OWN, FOR THOSE GIRL CHILDREN
- like we just had a whole season of people being like “FOR THE BOY CHILD, WE MUST DO--” and then series two is just like “FOR THE MAN WHO IS SAD ABOUT THE LOSS OF THE GIRL CHILD--”
- also what kind of a dumbo shows the cop who is newly introduced to your case a photo of yourself wearing the missing piece of evidence
- like HI NEW COP WANNA SEE SOME EVIDENCE
- also why oh why does no one ever discuss the New Development in the scene in which it is discovered?? scenes are allowed to have more than one plot point, i dunno if you guys heard. It’s the latest thing.
- so basically when you show the new copy this absolutely damning evidence, new cop should not be like DON’T EVEN MENTION IT, SELF, DON’T LOOK AT THE NEW EVIDENCE, DON’T SPEAK OF IT. WHEN I GET HOME, I CAN CALL HER AND THEN WE CAN SPEAK OF IT. SHE WILL TOTALLY NOT BURN THIS EVIDENCE IN THE NEXT SCENE.
- also, hey, another brand new thing, all the cool kids are talking about it: stalking is not a convenient kind of witnessing to upcoming crime, it is ALSO a crime and it’s horrible and wHY ARE YOU ENDING THIS SCENE HE IS A STALKER AND THE GIRL HE STALKED IS DEAD
- also here’s a key bit of interrogation advice: suspects do not confess because you tell them how hard it has been for you to figure the case out. Seriously. “Tell me the truth,” says cop. “No,” says suspect. “BUT I WORKED SO HARD,” says cop. “OK, I will tell you everything,” says suspect. WHAT.
- WHY IS THERE A RANDOM UNEXPLAINED SUBPLOT ABOUT A MAYBE WRONGFULLY CONVICTED BLACK YOUTH??? LIKE SERIOUSLY THIS IS A WHOLE OTHER THING, WHAT ARE YOU DOING. YOU RECOGNIZE THAT THAT’S A BLACK YOUTH, RIGHT, AND THAT BLACK YOUTHS BEING WRONGFULLY IMPRISONED IS A WHOLE INTERNATIONAL ISSUE, RIGHT. YOU DO RECOGNIZE THESE THINGS RIGHT. RIGHT.
- Susan Wright makes no sense. wtf.
- If I was on that jury, I would have declared a mistrial based SOLELY on how shittily both legal sides presented their cases. None of this makes sense.
- If nothing else, series 1 should have taught us that Using Our Words not only is the healthy thing to do, it prevents murder. And yet absolutely no one in series 2 Uses Their Words. The prosecution even was like, “Just to double check, guys, has everyone been Using Their Words? Because we will be up shit’s creek without a paddle if someone is forced to Use Their Words at the last minute and we didn’t expect it.” And the entire town--which is maybe four households? apparently?--nods and is like, “Yes, ma’am, we learned about that last series.” But apparently not?
- also iT IS NOT OK TO MEET WITH A TEENAGE BOY IN AN EMPTY CARAVAN ALONE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, WTF, THAT DOESN’T “LOOK BAD” THAT IS BAD.
- I also am very confused how journalism---the only force in this entire show that actively, consistently pushes for everyone to Use Their Words---is the bad guy. Like. Olly is repeatedly shut down for trying to disseminate information. You guys get that being required to be honest and engaged with the rest of the community is not a punishment, it is literally how civilization works, right?
JUST TO NAME A FEW ISSUES, I AM VERY ANGRY ABOUT THIS SHOW STILL.
