Rivendell is absolutely beautiful at night. Elves don't need much rest, and Rivendell's resident orcs prefer to be out when the sun is down, so the valley never really sleeps. Glowing plants and mushrooms line pathways, carving multicolored trails across fields and forests. (The mushrooms are mostly Elrond's fault– you can't give an eldritch half-elf a valley and not expect them to grow all manner of strange and wonderful things there) Swarms of fireflies fill the air, set against a backdrop of shimmering stars. People laugh, and talk, and dance until the dawn breaks. Elves and orcs sing together under the full moon. Shadows twist and spin in the light of stained-glass lamps. Strange and beautiful music is heard through the valley, though no one is quite sure where it comes from. It's no wonder that many who wander into Rivendell choose to never leave. It's also no wonder that many refer to it as a fairy kingdom and fear the strange and wonderful things that happen there.
