Magimi - Chapter 2 (Preview)

“You seem cheery today,” remarked Mert the squirrel as he helped Rori put away her wooden carvings in the crates. 

Rori looked down at the short brown squirrel standing as tall as her legs. His beady black eyes tried to read the redhead’s thoughts, curious about the peculiar mood of the woodcarver. Usually Rori was calm and quiet, but here she was humming to herself while she was closing her stall.

Rori raised her thick red eyebrows. “What do you mean?” asked the redhead in a heavy northern accent.

“It looks like…” Mert’s voice trailed off as he pondered.

“Like what?” 

“Like you’re in love!” Mert exclaimed with a heavy sigh pressing his hands together. His eyes were full of cupid’s arrows. 

The woodcarver rolled her eyes. “Knock it off, Mert.” 

The squirrel scoffed dismissing her with his furry hand. “You finally asked a girl out for Valentina Festival. Who’s the lucky gal?” 

Rori smiled to herself. “A beautiful witch.”

Mert gasped, surprised by the woodcarver’s choice. “Which witch? I pray to the Goddess it’s not that nasty witch that nearly turned me into a girl.”

The redhead chuckled shaking her head. “In the first place, it was your fault for provokin’ her. You were flirtin’ with her when she was engaged.” 

The squirrel’s cheek turned bright red. “That wasn’t my fault! It’s not like I saw her teensy engagement ring.”

“The witch I asked out is harmless anyway,” Rori continued. “She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever laid my eyes on.”

Mert raised his eyes. “You should never underestimate the power of witches. You’ll never know if she ever changes her mind…. and turns you into a frog!”

The redhead laughed. “I’ll be fine.”

“You sure she didn’t cast a spell on you?” the squirrel asked. Although it was a nice change to see the woodcarver in love, Mert was worried about the redhead. He was afraid she was going to get hurt most in the end because the witch would be her first love. 

“I’m sure,” Rori replied sternly, annoyed by the squirrel’s assumptions and prying questions. She sealed the last crate and lifted it up. Mert helped her placed it inside the wagon.   

“So are you going to tell me her name?” Mert begged. 

The redhead shook her head. “But you’ll get to see her to-morrow night at the festival if you help me get a reservation at Puck’s Tavern.”

Mert widened his eyes, giving away his excitement. “I’ll try my best, lass! How you win her heart anyway?”

Rori pulled her wagon of crated wares and smiled at the glowing Goddess statue in the distance. The crystal statue glistened under the moonlight, sending Rori chills at its marvelous beauty. 

“I’ve admired her afar for a while but never had a chance to talk to her,” Rori murmured. “Let’s just say I had help on the way.”....
