Oh yes .. [Constructing Solomonic Circles]! :D For locations, I recommend places as far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life as possible. Part of this is for the comfort of others (who might not want to hear you chanting, or smell your incense smoke), part of this is for the comfort of yourself (so your ritual surroundings are as free of ambient distractions and potential interruption as possible), and part of this is for the comfort of the spirits (many of whom don’t like being in densely populated, and/or distraction filled spaces).

The above is just a recommendation - I’m not at all suggesting your operations are doomed to failure if you’re trying to do them in the middle of a high rise apartment building of a major metropolitan city, just that (depending on the spirit you’re attempting to call) you might have to put in more time into it, reciting through additional iterations and being more patient as your magic coaxes them to a less than harmonious local.

For materials, traditionally you would draw the circle into the dirt with the Sword/Lance/Trident/BHK (depending on your favorite KoS flavor). This is still an acceptable thing to do. You can also draw in chalk or in paint, as your environment/materials allow (though, for more permanent circles, always double and triple check you’re not making permanent those aspects which are variable to different spirits - you don’t want to literally paint yourself into a corner with this).

All that said, here are two suggestions I give:

First, regardless of how/where you are drawing your circles, always make sure your lines are unbroken. This means you can pretty much exclude carpet from your list of acceptable materials, and that I am not a subscriber to the belief that an imaginary circle is adequate.

Second, I follow the Dr. Skinner train of thought regarding more permanent style circles: always trace over your circles with your blade when you go to use them. There is something more to the physical act of “cutting the circle” than just the drawing of it. What that is, exactly, I’m not sure - but there is a palpable, measurable, difference in the operation. Again, you’re not doomed to fail if you don’t do this, it’s just one of those extra-steps that tend to be beneficial for a large number of people.

As for the paint or chalk you use… it honestly does not matter. If you want to use paint and/or chalk that is keyed to the operation, that certainly won't hurt things at all, but since all the original instructions are about cutting the dirt, as opposed to overly complex material requisites (like you see with the Ars Almadel, ouch), you’re not going to run into any real drawbacks -- unless you purposely use materials which are anathema to the spirits you’re attempting to contact.

But, as far as recommendations go, you mix up some cascarilla, frankincense, hyssop, a drop or two of holy oil, and just a pinch of rue and a dash of cinnamon. Create a chalk with that mixture (using a lot more cascarilla as the bulk of the chalk though. Check out [my post on chalk] for more info), or add it to a base of regular paint and let it macerate for a full lunar cycle. This will result in a pretty good generic, all-purpose chalk/paint you can use until the spirit you’re communicating with gives you more information on what they would prefer.

            saori wasn’t quite sure when he had fallen asleep, but she knew that she wouldn’t dare wake him up. she had invited him over to watch a movie that she had been meaning to watch for a while. doing stuff like this was always more fun when you had friends around. and she had decided that since she was starting to become friends with toshiyuki, this was the best way to bond. what she hadn’t expected though was him falling asleep. let alone on her shoulder.

          saori didn’t know what to do. she didn’t want to wake him up but this made her nervous. she was looking at his sleeping figure. trying to think of a way to not wake him up. she had decided to just stay seated and try and find something else to watch. she was anxious. an attractive man had fallen asleep on her shoulder. her cheeks were painted bright pink as she tried to make subtle movements, in an attempt to not awaken him.
