madscientista replied to your post “what are some of your PI/advisor’s favorite quotes they like to say...”
“I’ve poisoned you!” (Meaning, you’ve internalized my explanation and I want you to tell me what you really think)
terrifying. yet effective i suppose.
madscientista replied to your photo “02.26.17 // it’s always weird being in lab at night, especially since...”
Yeah but windowless labs are great ways to go nuts, because it feels like night even in the middle of the afternoon.
grad school in general is a great way to go nuts, because it feels like you’re not being productive even though it’s been years

44. Do you have a strong accent?I personally don’t think so. I don’t think I really have much of an accent at all, honestly. 28. What type of music do you like?About the only things I’m really not a fan of are rap, r&b, most metal. I’ll listen to pretty much anything else. Preference is usually towards 80s rock, but also Irish/Celtic, some musicals, movie soundtracks. It really depends on my mood at the time.12. What was your last dream about?I don’t remember the entire thing. I vaguely remember using a towel twirled up, and using it like a whip to get something off a table (like Indiana Jones, not to snap people in the butt). I usually don’t remember dreams too much. Thanks!

I’m so frustrated with myself. I felt so motivated...
I mean, I crash my PIs office almost daily, though now it’s more like semiweekly. And I’ve had meetings where I was basically a petulant child saying “I don’t know what I want/think/know!” over and over. I’ve also stormed out of an office and past hers yelling “I told you I don’t fucking know!” She was only surprised that it happened after my comps rather than before. Basically cracking up and being a bother sometimes happens and the good advisors know that’s what they sign on for as an advisor
That’s really reassuring. How long until you got to that point? I’m only a first-year, and my program doesn’t have labs. In theory, I could meet with my advisor once a semester to have my schedul rubber-stamped and otherwise never speak to another authority figure outside of class.
But I’d really love to have my advisor as someone to bounce ideas off of to refine my thinking, someone than can help me develop some social and emotional intelligence in the context of academia. Because I have no problems learning or thinking or writing. I am technically very, very proficient. It’s everything outside of that I need help with.
Unfortunately, I don’t know how to go about developing that relationship (because I lack social and emotional intelligence). Most likely I’ll just come clean and he’ll be delightful about it and I’ll feel silly for worrying. But it’s hard...

Thanks! Aside from unhealthy coping mechanisms, those all sound delicious and I will be trying them throughout the winter/holiday season.
i mean, if any time of year calls for unhealthy coping mechanisms it’s the holidays so there’s that
madscientista replied to your post “i’m honestly baffled by the people who get up super early to go watch...”
Pro tip: just don't go to sleep. Be drunk, stay drunk, nap irregularly in front of the TV, be the depressed/mourning version of me. Actually don't because it sucks, but that's literally the only way I've ever seen the Thanksgiving day parade, and you aren't alone in your non-adult sleeping patterns.
part of it, i realize, is that watching the parade was never a part of my family’s holiday traditions, so it’s just not a think for me, but mostly, i refuse to get out of bed early on holidays if i can at all avoid it.
the major exception being christmas where if we aren’t all up by 10 on both days my sister will wake us all up because she doesn’t want to wait for christmas to start (she’s 20 but acts like a 5 yo about christmas specifically)
