His goal was to find a right body on original wheels and no matter which engine will it have. Before he even bought it, he started gathering parts: he ordered a set of DGR coilovers from our shop and bought an Eisenmann exhaust. Then he finished some Style 23 wheels and after a week traded them for a squared set of BBS RS198 17x8.5 built in 1988, which weren't in a best condition. They were restored and now are waiting for a pair of 1.5" wider rear lips.

First and foremost, Nick just wanted to own an M5. There's nothing like the feel of driving an old bmw, and the M5 was the best of the best. It's a family sedan, tweaked with some of that classic BMW racing heritage. Nicolas was actually looking for an E28 when the opportunity came up for him to buy this.

"Funny story, I bought it from a family friend who I randomly ran into at a vintage car race at Laguna Seca in Monterey. He saw I was looking at an E28 for sale, then mentioned he had an E34 his wife was wanting him to sell. Emails were exchanged and no more than a week later, I drove up and bought the car. My first car was an E28 535is and I told myself when I was able to, I'd buy an E28 again but the only way was up... meaning it HAD to be an M5." — Nick

The E34 M5 is the last of the handbuilt M-cars from the factory. Back when M actually stood for Motorsport and had true ties to the racing BMW was doing at the time. The S38B36 motor is the second iteration of the S38 motor, with the first being in the E28 M5, E24 M6, and most importantly the M1. Not to mention the individual throttle bodies sound amazing! Also, the car wears Calypso Red (Calypsorot) which was a fairly rare color for M5's in this chassis. Nick looked up E34 M5 production numbers for North America, and found out that only 5 were sold in this color between the U.S. and Canada in 1993. Needless to say, you won't see many other M's in this color. Also, it had grey painted lowers from the factory, but those had been repainted by a previous owner. Nick is the 4th owner, and while the car is 21 years old, it has 135,000 miles.

Nick is a big fan of keeping everything period correct. Hence why he chose the AC Schnitzer Type 1's, they look right at home on this car and personally, you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking wheel for this chassis. He prefers the understated vs. loud and in your face styles.

"One of the main objectives once acquiring my car, was simplicity. It's such a fantastic car out of the box from BMW, there's not much I really wanted to change. Rather, I wanted to enhance what it started as from the factory. I may be a bit biased, but I'd like to believe I'm accomplishing that. No doubt that my favorites are the individual throttle bodies! The sound of them in the higher RPM's under wide open throttle is intoxicating. It's hard to keep my foot out of it. Also, I love that it's a 1993. Only this year in the U.S. came with "Motorsport" door handles and aero mirrors. It's the little things for me." — Nick

You'll ask what overall has Nick did to it and these things were custom programming, schrick cams, Ground Control coilovers (Koni adjustable struts with Eibach springs) and Powerflex polyurethane control arm bushings up front. The wheels are AC Schnitzer Type 1 (17x8.5 ET13 front, 17x10 ET19) with Dunlop Direzza ZII tires (235/45/17 front, 255/40/17 rear). Talking about details, this M5 came with a factory 90's Motorola phone and now Nick figures out how to reinstall it.

"I’ve been blessed to have many friends and family members support and help out with the build. Whether it was the long weekend with my good friend Kyle doing the turbo swap and new fuel setup, or my family and girlfriend turning my head around from selling the car multiple times, they’ve always had my back. Shout out to my Function:error crew and much love to everyone’s cars keeping us wanting to push the boundaries with each other! There are countless builds and cars out there that I can’t compare to which is what makes the car enthusiast family something wonderful. I have run by a motto for a long time of “Inspired to Inspire” because after my second Import Alliance summer meet, I realized that while there are countless cars that make my car drop with envy, there are also those knew to the scene or that just found something in the car who love my car. So its humbling to think while I’m inspired to get my car to a new level, there are also other people who may view my car in the same light and that is something cool to ponder and be grateful for. So a fun fact of the car that I’m constantly teased about is that I do drive a lot. On a modification list, there isn’t really anything one-of-a-kind on the car, but it does have its own unique look to it. What I love about the car is that it has been across 11 state borders with over 85,000 miles since I picked it up. It was a Minnesota car (where I grew up) and it tagged with me through finishing school in Milwaukee, WI, state-to-state job interviews, and Import Alliance summer meets. I do hope to start taking the car further south and west to meet many more new faces. Car owners often have a bond with their cars and this one is no different. Whether it’s the six hour drive to see my family, or the half day stints down south to North Carolina, Kentucky, or Tennessee, this car hasn’t backed down from a long distance challenge. That’s the character of this car in a nutshell and it has done it all on sitting low on coilover suspension. Is it scary some trips? You bet but where’s the fun with no challenge? Enough about the “I drive a lot” part, which makes the car special to me, let’s talk modifications. The look it has now consists of 18x10 SSR SP3 wheels, HT Autos extensions with WRX side skirts, and the common V-limited replica front lip. This is the third set the car has run for show and by far is my favorite and most aggressive. I couldn’t be happier with how the car sits regarding the stance. The motor is a stage I build from RS Motors in Burnsville, MN, and now has been upgraded with a VF48 turbo, Injector Dynamics 1000cc top feed conversion, front mount intercooler, and an E85 tune sitting at 364 awhp and 416 ft-lbs. Recently I went through the engine bay and added an intake manifold that I shave myself, WC Lathewerks alternator cover, and Perrin radiator shroud, all coated in candy purple powdercoat. This car isn’t just for looks; it packs the extra kick in the pants that boosted all-wheel-drive owners are familiar with.
