A Planthopper (Family Delphacidae) in my backyard, June 2018. This individual doesn't have the fully functioning large wings normally associated with a Planthopper adult (similar to my discussion of nymphal Grasshoppers, yesterday), but it's actually an adult. Many species of Delphacidae have two forms of adult: one with short wings that can't fly (pictured here) and one that develops long wings and is capable of flight. Long-legged Fly (Genus Condylostylus) in my backyard, June 2018. These beautiful metallic green flies are common on leaves in gardens and forests across North America. Ant-like Scavenger Fly (Family Sepsidae, possibly Nemopoda nitidula), in my backyard, May 2018. These flies certainly are "ant-like" in appearance, but move very much like flies. This one was dancing about on a leaf in my garden and shaking its wings, performing some sort of courtship display. Sepsid Flies develop as larvae in dung or carrion, or even compost (decaying plant as opposed to animal matter). Eastern Black Carpenter Ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) in my backyard, June 2018. These Carpenter Ants have multiple sizes within the same species (termed major or minor castes). The major workers are some of the largest ants in North America, and one is pictured here. Also of note is that this worker has another ant clinging to (and biting) its leg.
