Hey FAM!! Just wondering which unis are y'all applying to? And which courses are you guys planning to do if you're happy to share! GOOD LUCK WITH EXAMS
Hey,
FAM Member 1: Thanks for the good luck :) I’m most likely going to be applying to courses at Unimelb and Monash. Haha, I honestly have a range of courses that I want to get into but most of my courses are generally surrounding commerce or health courses :)
FAM Member 2: Thank you! I’m still not really sure what I want to do with myself post-high school so I keep changing my mind about what course I want to do. Initially at the start of the year I thought I wanted to do an arts/science or science/global studies double degree at Monash. But I changed my mind and I think I want to do a bachelor of environment and sustainability/bachelor of asian studies double degree at ANU, and sometimes I think I want to do arts/languages or arts/european studies at ANU too. I keep changing my mind. Sometimes now I think I want to do Outdoor Education at La trobe or a BSocial Work/BSocial Psychology at RMIT. I won’t even go into all the other courses I contemplated doing in Year 11. Hopefully I’ll make up my mind by change of preferences.
FAM Member 3: Thank you! All of my courses are design/fine arts, with my top pick being an Arts/Education double degree at Monash! All of my other preferences are either fine arts/ design/communication design at UniMelb, Monash and RMIT :)
So I'm in year 12 and I'm terrified for december 14. I don't feel like I can get the marks for the career path I want to take. I don't know what to do. At times I feel like death would be an easier option then seeing my sac papers returned. I don't feel supported at home or school and I just feel lost
Hey there,
That’s something we all understand. The worry and anxiety in sitting the exams, during our studies for subjects, and even outside of our school-related things. This feeling can be everywhere and affect everything in your life and in the end, it’s just extremely tiring. VCE feels like it begins and ends in a number that will define the rest of your life….right?
It’s not wrong. Yes, your ATAR will lead to you either receiving or not receiving a place in your intended course. Sure, waiting for and seeing SAC results can be demoralising. Sometimes, it feels like there’s nothing for you to work towards/for. But know that separate pathways are available for almost every course in university - marks help you get into getting qualifications for a career. However, every career relies on more than just how educated you are (experience, interpersonal skills). VCE and how well you perform is not the end nor the beginning of your transition to adult life.
Find something to work towards or to rely on throughout this year. What do you see yourself enjoying in the future? Play on your strengths in school. Begin a hobby or add something unrelated to school (sports/ meditation / etc).
What about your friends? Is someone you can talk to about your worries? And your family, teachers, or counselors? Whether it’s about a mistake you’ve made in maths, or just some trouble you’re having in extracurricular there’s always an adult and peer (email one of us) to go to.
You may feel like a student who has no idea what they’re doing, someone who has no direction to go in but you do. You have your future to look forward to. We don’t know what’s coming, we don’t know what will happen but despite this year, focus on what keeps you going and things will be fine.
No matter the direction your life goes towards/what career you end up taking it won’t be because of just this year. I believe in you, and more importantly - believe in yourself. In the words of Mr Page, You can do this!
i want to take a gap year. it would be working and travel, so i'd be gaining life experience and money and al of that, but i'm worried about how it could affect my chances at university. what if i don't end up going back to uni? what if i'm behind? what if i'm the oldest in my course and i don't make friends? what if i get left behind in life when all my friends are finishing their degrees and getting successful careers?? i can't imagine going to uni, but i also can't imagine not.
Hey,
FAM Member 1: Taking a gap year won’t affect your chances at uni! If anything, unis are now looking at things other than the ATAR (about time!). Sometimes they even prefer people who’ve gone out and experienced the real world. As for not wanting to go to uni, or not being able to imagine yourself going to uni, I relate deeply.
I’ve realised going to uni and all learning after high school really should be up to you, learn what you want, when you want. And the fact that you may be the oldest in a course shouldn’t matter, because you may be 10x more motivated than others in the course who are still burnt out from high school :’). I’ve heard that after high school, when making friends, age really doesn’t matter, it’s just a number.
From what you’ve said, it sounds like taking a gap year will be a great time for you to think about if you want to go to uni! And remember there are always other options like short courses, internships, or going straight to work.
FAM Member 2: Hey there! To be honest I’m also gonna be taking a gap year since I feel incredibly burnt out these past 2 years with family stuff and the ongoing need to study.
Similarly I also was on the same wavelength of thoughts, but I really doubt that it would have drastic even minor effects at your chances in uni. If you are still really worried, I suggest you just pop in to Mrs. Serpless and have a chat about it. I also mentioned the idea to one of the counsellors whilst talking to her and she even said it’s better since you are more refreshed and there will probably be more zest and excitement to get back into studying and tackling that degree!
I also highly doubt that you will be the oldest in your course because people well into their 30’s, 40’s and even beyond have enrolled and successfully studied at universities. (My dad was 33 when he did a mechanical engineering degree at Monash so no worries!).
You also probably won’t get lost or fall behind your friends. I’m sure that some of them, if not your new friends and colleagues will definitely change degrees or other parts of their life may interfere. I believe that uni is a much wider pool than the boundaries of high school and it’s a lot more free roam so it’s completely okay to not know where you are going or what you are doing! You won’t get left behind or be the oldest haha (unless you come back many years later) and if want alternatives to uni go speak to Mrs. Serpless or even Gillian (trust me I’ve recently had the conversation too!)
Mind my haphazardly writing and please don’t stress too much! Know that I’m in a very similar boat to you!
hey fam just a general question here so what do you guys want to do or plan on doing after graduation (uni courses, holidays, etc.)?
Hey,
FAM Member 1; My plan A is to go on a gap year to Godstowe. If that doesn’t work out I’ll go to China, visit family and then come back and probably do a short TAFE course in something that interests me. And then hopefully go to uni, probably doing arts, commerce??, or education. :)
FAM Member 2: Hey! Right now I’m planning to go to Japan for a few weeks at the end of the year, and then next year I’m keen on doing a course at Monash called ‘Bachelors of Advanced Science and Research + Honours’. It’s basically an extended, accelerated degree with an honours year included, and is really good if you already have a clear idea of what you want to study. :)
FAM Member 3: Similar to the first FAM member, I plan to take a gap year hopefully to Godstowe! If that doesn’t work then I’ll hopefully have been accepted for another gap year abroad ahaha. If gapping doesn’t work out at all, I plan to move out of home and go to uni and study design/visual arts or something along those lines :)

hey fam, what do we year 12s do with all our google stuff after we graduate and our school email and everything gets deactivated? like how should we migrate stuff
Hey,
Good question! We’re not too sure, but we could probably get the IT caps to talk about this later in the year! I would recommend to start signing up for things with another personal email from now though and make sure that all your social media accounts are not logged in with your school email!
In terms of moving documents and files from your google drive, perhaps downloading something like evernote or onenote might help with this? Of course doing this and/or downloading each individual file is time consuming so hopefully there’s a better way to do this and that we learn the best way to do it.
