FAM Member 1: Despite the fact that you don’t know her well or have many mutual friends, doesn’t mean this can’t change!

These days it’s super easy to get in contact with someone, especially over social media so perhaps if you’re friends with her or are following her on her socials maybe send a message? Just a ‘Hey how’s it going?’ or a text of recognition will likely be really appreciated by her because it’s something small yet notable and really can brighten up someone’s day.

Even if she seems to be really busy in person maybe she needs someone to ground her and slow her down so even if this is the case don’t feel as if you shouldn’t try to talk to her in fear of getting in her way because it’s often really nice when people that you don’t know well come up to you.

(part 2) I just submitted the ask about how my friend is suicidal, and honestly I’m so so worried I’m about to start crying in class. I just want her to be ok but it’s not. I don’t know what to do and I’m so worried and overwhelmed

Firstly, we’re so sorry for the late reply! It always hurts to see a friend in pain and not being sure of what to do to help but something you should definitely do is let someone know about your friend. Yes, it may seem daunting, especially if they’ve asked you to keep confidentiality but it is required if you want to help your friend in the long term. Preferably, ask help from someone you both trust, someone that is qualified and would know what to do in this situation. This can be a parent, teacher, doctor or councillor.

But for now, just pick up your phone and give her a call. Even if you don’t know what to say, I’m sure your presence would be appreciated by her, especially seeing as she chose to trust you with her vulnerabilities in the first place. Just talking to someone and being there for them makes so much of a difference.

We’re not too sure what you mean by ‘response’ whether that is between yourself alone, with friends or confronting that person. By all means, you have every right to be angry and even sad if you considered that person close. You can be frustrated and extremely upset. You can also be nonchalant about it. There is no right or wrong in how you feel, they are your emotions and you are allowed to express it.

In terms of having to deal with that person, you can decide to ignore or confront them. I know that there are people who would rather push it aside with or without clearing their names. However, for me, I would try to talk to that person to get their side of the story and ask why they are acting that way. Of course, try to approach it calmly but confidently; avoid going into full aggressive mode no matter how angry you are, but at the same time, show that you are in control and you aren’t afraid.

You can make the first move and just say hi! You guys are in a much easier position to do so because if you’re in a big group it is more intimidating for her. This way you can get to know her bit by bit and build up a friendship or at least talk more often. By getting to know her you can introduce her to your friend and they can start their own friendships that way. From here they might both feel more comfortable to talk with one another and things might progress from there! You could also encourage your friend to start up a conversation online with the other girl if he feels more comfortable that way

I wouldn’t call it stupid, but it does sound like an overreaction. But that’s okay! Because now that you know how you feel, you can also deal with the situation better. You can try gradually start to talking to him again, and then suss out how he feels about you. Or you could just come clean and explain everything including why you shut him out. Also, what makes you feel like you will just be hurt in the long run? We know there are plenty of relationships that don’t end amicably but that doesn’t have to be the case, it really depends on how you guys handle the situation. You never know it might be all worth it :)

I know this sucks :( But the best thing you can do is express your feelings (politely ofc) to this person. Perhaps they have a reason for the way they’re acting/what they did - you won’t know till you ask. If you’ve already done this, and their response was disappointing, you may have to try avoiding them until you are feeling better. Maybe question why you feel let down by them and if they really did something wrong? Do they realise they did something wrong? Communicating with them is one option, and the other would be to forgive and forget and just let it go.
