Congrats to Titus Kaphar on winning a MacArthur Genius Grant!!! Such a brilliant and well deserving artist for his work. It was only a matter of time before he was recognized. It was BEYOND me why he wasn't talked about more amongst today's heralded contemporary artists. Shouts to @blackartistnews for putting me on to check out his exhibition The Vesper Project back in 2013 at Friedman Benda. Went on a whim and he just so happened to be giving a talk on his work and I got to meet him. Turns out he lived 40 mins away in New Haven. Congratulations to composer and musician Tyshawn Sorey on winning a MacArthur Fellowship!  Sorey “is a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, ensemble leader, and conductor assimilating and transforming ideas from a broad spectrum of traditional and experimental idioms into musical creations that celebrate alternative musical modeling within the improvisation-composition continuum.” Learn more about Sorey here and about the other 2017 MacArthur Fellows here. 

Congratulations to musician and music historian Rhiannon Giddens on winning a MacArthur Fellowship!  Giddens is a “singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter enriching our understanding of American music by reclaiming African American contributions to folk and country genres and revealing affinities between a range of musical traditions, from gospel and Celtic to jazz and R&B.” Learn more about Giddens here and about the other 2017 MacArthur Fellows here. 

Congratulations to Nikole Hannah-Jones on winning a MacArthur Fellowship! Hannah-Jones “is an investigative journalist chronicling the demise of racial integration efforts and persistence of segregation in American society, particularly in education.
