The MACELLUM, Pompeii - plan, an iffy 1899 reconstruction (the columns look too skinny for my taste) and in relation to the Forum - upper right corner, greyed out. The Macellum was a market - some think a produce market, some think more wholesale than retail.

A large Roman shopping mall from Flavian era. Location must have been pretty good because it was close to the sea (Mediterranean can be seen in photos 1-3), It is also - incorrectly - called temple of Serapis due to a statue that was discovered here. (2064 x1548)

Day 4 in Naples was âAncient Rome dayâ.
We started by a long (and suffocating) visit of Herculaneum. Itâs a less crowded than Pompei and you can see houses with two stories there. I developped an addiction to tiles, as you can guess.
In the afternoon we went to Pozzuoli to visit the amphitheater (the second-to-last pic shows its underground structure) and the macellum (the market place). Pozzuoli is one of these underrated places in Campania: itâs beautiful and worth a visit but we hardly saw any touristsâŚÂ
