how about one night mac and dennis are drunk and mac is visiting dennis at penn and starts goin on about how much he wants a tattoo but they’re so expensive. and dennis’ roommate happens to have needles and ink and dennis tells mac he’s seen his roommate tattoo himself like all the time. so mac is like “holy shit dude I really wanna do that but I’m nervous.” and dennis is like “don’t be an idiot I’m gonna do it for you and it’s gonna look so good.”

and mac swallows hard, suddenly very aware of what’s about to happen—dennis holding his thigh still while he traces out a shape with a ball point pen. and he’s so close and telling mac he’s brave and it takes a lot to handle pain like this. and mac has to bite down on the inside of his cheek to keep from flinching but after a while the pain settles into a steady burn, and dennis keeps looking into his eyes to make sure he’s alright and mac knows his pupils are dilated but so are dennis’ so it’s fine. and when they’re done mac jokes about “kissing it better” and dennis blinks but then he’s kissing mac, actually kissing him and his hand is still gripping mac’s thigh and his other hand is in mac’s hair and mac thinks maybe this is the best night of his life.

Mac's fingers grip Dennis's hair harder, but not hard enough to hurt, which pisses Dennis off. Hurt me, Dennis thinks, I deserve it. The hollow of Dennis's heart yawns wide as a chasm, as an abyss. Fill me up with something other than all this nothing.

But Mac doesn't. His grip on Dennis is only a reassurance that Dennis is here, really here, on his knees for Mac. His eyes are full of reverence, devotion to Dennis and Dennis alone.

Dennis is drunk, sure, but he's wasted on the way Mac looks at him.

“Mom, I’m home!” Mac jiggles the key just right to get it out of the door without it sticking and causing a racket, which his mother hates. Causing a racket, that’s the second worst offense in the McDonald household, certainly much more egregious than selling drugs and going to jail. The number one offense was being a wet blanket, an overarching term for the incredibly rare occasions of not going along with whatever illegal, dangerous, or generally fucked up shit his parents told him to do.
