I know what you mean about the Dean and Cas plot, I was just thinking about that recently and it made me really sad :( I haven't been able to feel much enthusiasm since Season 10 and it sucks cause I used to love this show so much
You know, I used to be really enthusiastic about Carverās work in s8, it was a really refreshing and promising season. I still like Carver potentially, thereās things that I think heās interested in as a showrunner for Supernatural that Iād like to see, even though I realize theyāre not happening right now and that is a let-down. What Iām starting to believe is that the more we go on, the more it becomes clear that perhaps the biggest problem with Carverās era is lack of commitment. In stories, directions, themes, developments. Up high they like to joke that they make it up as they go; Iām not saying you need a strict plan, itās good to be able to adapt your story as you go and let the current steer you - what they could use is a lot more of sticking to your own decisions. More seeing what they set up through to the end, in the sense of a place where a theme or development has had its significative effects and you can move on to new narrative objectives taking the previous achievements for granted. Instead they drop major plot points, major B plots, major pieces of character development. They set up a story, drag it out, change course mid-journey, they forget about it conveniently like they couldnāt be bothered to deal with the conequences of that story. They go back and forth between development and lack thereof, they write five different versions of the same characters depending on whoās writing that week, they canāt seem to agree on what theyāre doing, thereās a lot of set up and very little payoff because you can never count on an achievement not to be undone in next weekās episode, or in the next season. And so forth. Itās like they canāt decide neither on a bigger path to follow, nor on a pattern of smaller developments to actualize that will make sense organically. The result is, unsurprisingly, a story that feels progressively more and more like a conglomerate of disconnected themes and plots, going for quantity over quality to the point that the quantity itself is detrimental to the quality. Thatās not to say there arenāt things Iām still appreciating, but these are major issues that are making it hard for me to enjoy it like I used to, and itās getting worse as we go on and get new material that still has those same issues. Sorry about the negativity on the first day of the year.
