Finally got around to visiting MacBar in Soho. After I didn’t enjoy Sarita’s Mac N’Cheese the last time I visited, I’ve been on the hunt for a new mac & cheese place, and MacBar undoubtedly dethroned Sarita’s as my new, go-to place in the city now. In comparison to Sarita’s, I felt that MacBar’s flavors were more innovative and daring overall.
The first time I went, I got the Mac Stroganoff (braised beef, stewed mushrooms, and sour cream sauce), Carbonara (pancetta, green peas, and parmigiano), Cheeseburger Mac (angus ground beef, cheddar, and American cheese), and Quack Mac (duck confit, caramelized onions, and fine herbs) flavors. The next time around, I got the Mayan Chipotle (chicken diablo, chihuahua cheese, and green onions) and Four Cheese (queso blanco, fontina, emmental, and gouda) flavors. It was neigh impossible to pick a favorite flavor, but I’d say that the Four Cheese, Quack Mac, and Carbonara flavors came pretty close.
The Mayan Chipotle had the spiciest kick to it out of all the flavors I had but interestingly had the same creamy consistency as the Mac Sstroganoff, and didn’t feel as heavy compared to the other flavors. The Panchetta flavor also tasted pretty light and weren’t as heavy, in comparison to a flavor like the Cheeseburger Mac or the Four Cheese. I still want to try the Margarita Mac (fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, parmigiana, and fresh basil) and Mac Shroom (roasted ‘magic’ mushrooms, fontina, mascaprone, and truffle essence) flavors sometime in the near future. Regardless if you’re a mac and cheese foodie that’s feeling a bit more on the adventourous side, MacBar is a definite must-visit.
The venue itself is pretty small, and can probably sit only 8-10 max, so I’d recommend getting the mac and cheese to go, or ordering ahead of time. The pricing is also pretty reasonable with sizes ranging from small to large, with small plates (featured above) ranging from $8-9, medium from $9-$14, and large from $15-19. Since I wanted to try a sample of different flavors, I got all mine in small sizes which I honestly felt were pretty hefty in size and could feed 1-2 people. Medium is probably for 2-3 people, and large could probably feed 4-6.
