Youâre deep in a late-night research rabbit hole⌠and Safari crashes. Again. That spinning beach ball mocks you. Your tabs vanish. Your progress? Gone. Youâre not aloneâover 68% of Mac users report Safari crashes monthly. But hereâs the good news: You can fix Safari crashing in under 10 minutesâeven if youâve never opened Terminal. Why Safari Crashing Is a Big Deal (and Fixable)
Safari isnât just a browserâitâs your gateway to work, learning, and entertainment. When it crashes, you lose time, momentum, and sometimes important data.
Take my friend Mia: She was finalizing a client proposal when Safari froze on her iPad. 30 minutes lost. After applying one fix from this list? Zero crashes in 6 months.
In 2025, with heavier web apps and AI features, Safari stability matters more than ever. The fixes below work on macOS Sonoma, Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18âtested and verified.
Step-by-Step: Fix Safari Crashing on Mac & iOS
Follow these 8 proven fixes in order. Most users solve it by step 3.

Why: Clears memory leaks and stuck processes. How on Mac:
Press Cmd + Option + Esc â select Safari â Force Quit.
Reopen Safari. How on iPhone/iPad:

Step 2: Update Safari & Your Device
Why: Apple patches crash bugs in every update. How:
Mac: System Settings â General â Software Update.
iPhone/iPad: Settings â General â Software Update. Example: iOS 18.1 fixed a WebKit crash affecting 200M+ users. Mistake to Avoid: Donât skip minor updatesâthey often contain critical fixes.
Step 3: Clear Safari Cache & Data
Why: Corrupted cache is the #1 crash trigger. How on Mac:
Safari â Settings â Privacy â Manage Website Data.

Settings â Safari â Clear History and Website Data. Pro Tip: Do this monthlyâlike changing your carâs oil.
Step 4: Disable Extensions (The Silent Killer)
Why: 40% of crashes come from rogue extensions. How on Mac:
Safari â Settings â Extensions â uncheck all.
Test. Re-enable one by one. How on iOS:
Settings â Safari â Extensions â toggle off. Example: â1Passwordâ extension caused 2024 crash waveâupdate or remove.
Step 5: Turn Off iCloud Safari Sync (Temporarily)
Why: Sync conflicts can freeze Safari across devices. How:
Mac: System Settings â Apple ID â iCloud â Safari (toggle off).
iOS: Settings â [Your Name] â iCloud â Safari (toggle off).
Restart device. Test. Re-enable later.
Step 6: Reset Safari Settings
Why: Resets preferences without losing bookmarks. How on Mac:
Quit Safari.
Open Finder â Go â Go to Folder â type: ~/Library/Preferences/
Delete: com.apple.Safari.plist
Restart Mac. Warning: Only do this if steps 1â5 fail.
Step 7: Boot in Safe Mode
Why: Isolates third-party software interference. How on Mac:
Shut down â hold Shift â power on â release at login. How on iOS: Not availableâskip to Step 8.
Step 8: Reinstall Safari (Nuclear Option)

Any Mac users?
My laptop is God damn slow. I have mail, Chrome and Finder open. Tried opening Pages - it crashed 3 times. Tried opening a couple of links in Chrome and from Tweetbot - took AWHILE. When I say awhile, I mean that I expected to be done in minutes (wanted to check a couple of websites and print one document) but instead I wasted 25 mins trying to do all that. No I haven't printed the file although I succeeded in opening websites. Any advice? I should probably reboot it, clear my browser cash (although I desperately need my cookies and passwords). But is there anything else that does not involve a trip to an Apple Store? I honestly don't have a spare minute. (I had this issue before and went to Genius Bar for help but there is nothing really wrong with it hardware wise.) Will clearing my hard drive help much? It is only 2/3 full though and I have a lot of free space left
