5.      “Someone’s happy to see me!”

Queenie Abrejo entered her house silently, tip toeing to the kitchen to get a snack. The light flicked on and she was met by many familiar faces.

“Welcome home!” She nearly fell back in surprise, her hand moving to her knife in reflex.

“Shit” she held her other hand to her chest, panting, “y’all know how I feel bout surprises”

Someone blew a party horn.

Mabel rushed towards her and jumped into her arms, kissing her face and wrapping her arms tightly around her neck.

“Somebody’s happy to see me”

“Happy?! I’m OVERJOYED!” Mabel planted another kiss on her cheek.

“Does this mean you won’t be hangin at the house everyday now?” Tozi asked.

“The opposite” Mabel gave her a grin and the younger girl groaned.

“Did you get tanner?” She asked, as Queenie put her down.

“When one spends summer on a beach, yes, I did”

“Don’t ever leave me again”

“Wait until these two hear about college” Tozi snickered and Queenie threw a ring at her.

“Yaretzi. That is no way to treat your sister, who you haven’t seen in over a month!” Chimalma scolded, moving forward to kiss Tozi’s head, “but we’ve missed you, and have cake and food. Here-eat!” She pointed Queenie towards the mountains of food on the coffee table.

“And in the living room? I should go away more often!”

A collective no sounded throughout the room.

“Alright! Alright!” Queenie dropped her arms but Mabel still clung to me.

“Alright, spider monkey, you can let go now.”
