Memorial Day Weekend range session! This range session featured only American rifles (or close copies) and service pistols that were used by American servicemen in the line of duty. From left to right, and in chronological order of service, the M1903, the P17, the M1 Garand, the M1 Carbine, the M16A2, and the M4 Carbine. It was a windy day so it was hard to gauge accuracy but the Garand turned in the best group of the day followed by the M4 (optics helped no doubt). I also shot 3 service pistols - an M1917 revolver in 45acp (using moon clips), a 1911 I built from a kit, and a Beretta M9. A tremendously fun day but also a day that gave me a feel for what it might have been like for American soldiers to shoot these guns in training
I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day.

Springfield Armory 1903 MK I .30-06 SPRG caliber rifle. Springfield 1903 with Pedersen device.
The authors trace the fascinating history of just one M1903, the very first, serial No. 1.
The Adventures of Springfield M1903 Serial Number #1
I recently had the chance to co co-wrote an with researcher Andrew Stolinski of the Archival Research Group. We traced the history of the first Springfield M1903 (serial number #1) ever built. Normally the first of a new rifle made would have spent its life in a museum but it somehow M1903 #1 was different.
Somehow it made it into the hands of a US soldier who took it all the way to France in 1918! In the article we follow the rifle’s journey using documentary sources including enrollment documents, morning reports, shipping manifests and Ordnance Department memos.
It's a truly fascinating, nuanced story!
