The Return of Disharmony: Hasbro's Loathed Decisions and A Princess Twilight Sparkle?!
MMMystery on the Friendship Express
Unless you been hiding under a rock the past two years, then you're familiar with the cultural phenomenon called My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Created by writer/animator Lauren Faust, since its first episode on The Hub premiered in 2010, Friendship Is Magic has swiftly become an acclaimed cartoon series, praised specifically for being unorthodox, clever, bold, amusing, endearing, and also, sneakily educational. The popularity of the animated show about anthropomorphic ponies learning about friendship has resonated well with parents, girls, along with surprisingly, older adults: both genders, they're known as Bronies and Pegasisters. When The Powerpuff Girls (which Faust worked with her husband Craig McCracken on) was airing from 1998 until 2005 on Cartoon Network, its core audience became college students (guys and gals) which wasn't the targeted demographic of a cartoon about a trio of superhero little girls (Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup) saving Townsville from whatever or dealing with normal issues young children face. Similarly, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic has been accepted and beloved by more than its original target demographic too.
In fact, the third season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic wrapped up on 2/16/2013. The entire thirteen episode season has been pure fan service. For example, the return of the magician pony Trixie to Ponyville, a Scootaloo centered episode, and Rainbow Dash joining the Wonderbolts Academy are all stuff passionate fans have desired/written about. And the writers for Friendship Is Magic dedicated whole episodes to explore these ideas. The future of Friendship of Magic includes a TV film and a 26 episode fourth season, forthcoming this winter.
Unfortunately, dissension (resorting to hateful comments and heated seemingly endless arguments) between Bronies and Pegasisters has begun. All because Twilight Sparkle became a princess alicorn of Equestria in the season 3 finale episode “Magical Mystery Cure”. This move to give Twilight Sparkle wings and a monarch title is another perceived instance of Hasbro's recent track record of “wounding its closest My Little Pony followers” which started in 2011 with Lauren Faust being screwed out (you can read her statement about leaving below) of her position on Friendship Is Magic.
The next strike against Hasbro came regarding the fan-made character of Derpy Hooves. “Derpy was a gray background pony with a cross-eyed stare (an animator's mistake) from the first episode that has gained a backing by MLP: FiM fanatics. On top of that, 4chan’s /co/ board fans named her Derpy Hooves (because of her googly-eyes) and constructed a complete personality for her, despite the character's minimal screen-time. Lauren Faust, the inventive mastermind behind Hasbro's MLP: FiM responded to Derpy Hooves enthusiasts by keeping her “derpy” eyes, name, and already built personality. Derpy's voice, mannerisms, crossed eyes, and inadvertently chaotic actions, have lead to some viewers insinuating that she's supposed to be mentally challenged, that MLP: FiM, a children's cartoon series preaching love and tolerance is poking fun at disabled people through her.” Due to this, the character has never gotten to speak again and sometimes her trademark eyes aren't even "derpy" in the slightest.
Furthermore, accusations were thrown at Hasbro concerning that the sole purpose of the pink alicorn Princess Cadence character (introduced in the Season 2 finale episode “A Canterlot Wedding”) was merely “to sell toys”. That this was the ultimate why of her character existed. Remember, Hasbro is a “toy company”. Now, taking her first two appearances into account, intially I agreed, but, after seeing Princess Cadence actually be herself and sincerely interact with the Mane Six in the season 3 episode, “Games Ponies Play”...I must disagree with the assumption Cadence was created to exclusively sell toys. “Games” shows that Cadence is an enjoyable and great supporting cast member. Princess Cadence does indeed aid with selling My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic products.
Additionally, anger and letdown aimed at Hasbro has been the response from Bronies regarding the recent cease and desist letters bestowed to the Mane6, the development team for the fan-made My Little Pony: Fighting Is Magic video game that's been in the works since 2011. What the hay, the Mane6 were crediting Hasbro and Lauren Faust via the game's splash screen. To boot, the Mane6 weren't going to profit once the game was finished being developed either: Fighting Is Magic was going to be a totally free game.
On the Internet, the fanatical FiM fandom has taken on the forms of artwork, fanfictions, flash animations, music videos, and etc., yet Hasbro has (had), for the most part, taken an encouraging and an incredibly tolerant stance towards creations made by Bronies/Pegasisters/anypony. So, the idea that cease and desist letters were given to the Mane6 is a bit astonishing. Perhaps, the possibility of the Mane6 having their unlicensed game featured at EVO 2013 was the final straw for Hasbro. On the other hand, Hasbro is completely within their rights (protecting IPs) to do what they're doing. Regardless, that hasn't assuaged those that are really furious and crushed about Fighting Is Magic's cancellation.
With the accumulation of Hasbro's past disliked actions, transforming the bookworm and spell-casting Twilight into a princess of Equestria is viewed as the nail in the Brony coffin, so to speak. Others have completely sided with M.A. Larson (the episode's writer) and with Twilight Sparkle's VA Tara Strong due to what she's said via interviews and Twitter. Still, the idea that it's nothing more than a marketing move that goes against everything the refreshingly maverick animated series has proudly constructed, er, has got people gnashing their teeth. For numerous eyes, Twi acquiring this title of royalty and leadership reinforces the stereotypes found with mainly Disney princesses (not all of them, obviously). Genuine fears that Twilight Sparkle's metamorphosis into a princess might separate her too much from her remaining pony girl pals and that she'll become over-idealized, akin to the Mary Sue phenomenon (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/mary-sue) were voiced before and after “Magical Mystery Cure” aired.
On top of that, devotees have asked questions like: If Twilight's a princess already, where does the show go from here? Has Friendship Is Magic reached it's peak already? What about characterization or plot? Shouldn't Twilight Sparkle obtaining the rank of Princess be saved for the end of the series...?
“You Have Proven That You're Ready.”
Throughout the course of the cartoon series, Twilight Sparkle's magical spell selection has grown. Her overall intelligence and understanding concerning the strength of friendship has gotten sharper too. And with a little help from her friends, Twilight has overcome Nightmare Moon which simultaneously reunited Princess Celestia with her sister Princess Luna and she trounced the draconequus Discord (The Master of Chaos). Oh, plus she had a very important hoof in uncovering the truth and assisting in Queen Chrysalis’s defeat in Canterlot. And let's not forget how she helped The Crystal Empire as well. Truthfully, the list goes on, and on, and on! In “Magical Mystery Cure”, through a song (“Celestia's Ballad”), Princess Celestia explains how unbelievably proud she is of her student regarding everything she's done so far and for solving Star Swirl the Bearded's (an unseen but referenced legendary spellcaster whom Twilight idolizes) unfinished magnum opus spell that he himself couldn't complete (because Star Swirl lacked a strong enough understanding of friendship). Now, the time has come for Twilight to turn the page on this chapter of her life and move on to fulfill her destiny.
Classic Twilight isn't going anywhere, everypony.
Despite her physical change in appearance and monarchy responsibility she now must deal with, the Twilight Sparkle that you know and love shall be retained. Similar to our own lives, the character of Twilight has entered a new phase of her pony life. Her new role lends itself to new narratives such as: Twilight Sparkle doubting that being a princess is her supreme destiny. Hey, she wasn't asked...Merely forced. I mean, she didn't elect herself to be the leader of the Mane Six or whatever. She simply took the reins on her own when it was absolutely necessary. If that was me, I'd be livid. My life has been forecast for me already? No hooving way! What if she hated being royalty? Rejected it? How about witnessing AJ, Fluttershy, Pinkie, RD, and Rarity struggling with adjusting to their newly crowned friend? What kind of feelings could perchance manifest? Can their friendship handle something like that? Do they, to some degree, resent her?
Look at that untapped well of storylines! See, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic hasn't peaked yet. I imagine that Twilight would be fine with them dropping the stuck-up formality of “Princess” whenever they address her though. Of course, Bronies and Pegasisters, for all we know, this winged Twilight could be temporary. Just continuing sticking with Friendship Is Magic. The future's uncertain, but that's interesting and exciting, no?
On the subject of if Twilight's transformation into a princess is a regression for females or not, well, that certainly could be argued, with validity. Conversely, unlike the majority of other princess characters, Twilight wasn't born into royalty nor did she discover that she used to be part of a royal family either. Twilight Sparkle has tirelessly worked her flank off to unknowingly acquire her imperial title and alicorn status. If Twilight had been handed an opportunity (without sweating or bettering herself) to get her wings/princess ranking, then, yes, Twilight would be reinforcing an extremely negative stereotype. Thankfully, this is not the case. Would I prefer her to be, say, some high ranking wizard of Equestria instead of a princess? Definitely! To me, that fits her character a lot more solidly. But, she's a princess, at the moment, so... That's that.
However, admittedly, I am still jake with Princess Twilight Sparkle. Intriguing whatnot could come from this alteration and character development, for reals. :)
I'll get used to those wings soon enough. With time. Before season 4 commences, ideally.
For those that despise the change to Twilight or vice versa, don't viciously trample fellow My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic enthusiasts. Love and tolerance, dudes. Also, no one's opinion is correct anyways. It is a strictly individualized belief, varying from person to person. Yours is just as logical as mine. There's no reason people need to get butthurt about it. Seriously.
P.S. I do have to put my hoof down about something that bothered me about Princess Twilight! How come she could fly? Without any lessons? She read a book about it, I guess...? O_o /)
