show your love for Unspoken, the Lynburns and SRB
Guys, we need to support Sarah Rees Brennan. She needs her sales to go up more or she might have to end up taking a pseudonym before Untold is released because her past books (before this series) had low sales and the bookseller chains might refuse to stock her books.
So, anyone who’s been planning to read Unspoken or buy it for a friend or family, NOW is the time!!
You all know how awesome the Lynburn Legacy is turning out to be. We don’t want our heart-breaker author to have to resort to changing her name for the rest of this series, do we?
Below she answers a fan’s question about why she might have to end up changing her author name —
Is it looking more likely at the moment that you’ll continue writing as Sarah Rees Brennan post-Lynburn, or more likely that you’ll switch to a different pen name? (Please say it’s the former!) Also, can you explain the business/strategic rationale behind switching to a different pen name?
I honestly don’t know. Depends on how things work out for Unspoken! So far it has this one really big challenge to face down, but we had an amazing opening week—made me truly believe in the power of the internet and very happy I’d done all those Gothic parodies!—thank you, you guys who bought it, you make me very happy!
There are two reasons for switching pen names.
One is if you’re doing fine, but you are doing something really different. Acclaimed romance author Nora Roberts called herself J.D. Robb and kept her identity secret for years to write mystery. (Actually the J.D. Robb series is science-fictiony mystery, but nobody ever knows that! I was so surprised to start reading them and find clones and robot spaniels.)
And then there’s the other reason to switch names, which is when your name has a black mark against it in terms of sales. Like I said, Unspoken has a fairly serious drawback to fight against, and so I appreciate you guys who have bought it SUPER MUCH! And also, y’know, to anyone who’s thought ‘hey, an SRB book, one day’… now is most certainly the time.
It’ll depend on a lot, including how the paperback and the new covers work out. But here’s hoping.
And of course, changing your name, also fine. Sarah Monette, a wonderful writer whose next book will be published under Katherine Addison, talks about why and wherefore here much better than I can:
