Owain knelt the moment he crossed the threshold.
Steel kissed stone. Head bowed. Fist to chest.
Shandrea let out a short, incredulous breath.
“Oh—don’t,” she said, waving a hand. “You don’t have to do that. I’m not—I mean, you can stand.”
He didn’t move.
“The crown has not yet told me otherwise,” he said evenly.
She frowned at that, fingers tightening where they rested on the arm of the chair. The crown felt heavier every time she remembered how little sleep she’d had with it on. One night. One choice. A kingdom still burning.
Owain’s voice cut the silence, careful but stiff. “If it helps… everyone falls apart at first. And then, sometimes, they die anyway.”
She snorted, rubbing her eyes. “You’re bad at comfort.”
“I have been informed,” Owain said, very seriously, “that I am improving.”
That earned him a real laugh. Brief, but real.
Then it faded again.
“It was supposed to be Eloise,” Shandrea said. “Everyone knew it. She’s been here for years. She knows the winds, the halls, the old wards. The spirits liked her.”
Owain nodded once. Too fast. Like he’d practiced that response.
“Graecie has served this kingdom for hundreds,” Shandrea went on, words tumbling now. “Nominal’s smarter than me, calmer. Mae would’ve burned the Red Kingdom to the ground before they ever touched us.” Her hands clenched in her lap. “Literally anyone else makes more sense.”
Silence stretched.
Owain cleared his throat. “The spirits,” he said carefully, “are… not known for their sense-making.”
She blinked at him. “That’s it?”
He winced. “I am attempting reassurance.”
“Try again.”
He exhaled, slow, like he was bracing for a sparring blow.
“They did not choose experience,” he said. “Or tenure. Or predictability. They chose… you.”
“That’s not better.”
“No,” Owain agreed immediately. “But it is precise.”
Shandrea looked away, jaw tight. “I don’t even know what they saw.”
Owain hesitated. Then—awkwardly—he reached out and stopped himself halfway, hand dropping back to his side.
“I don’t either,” he admitted. “If it were my decision, I would have prepared a list. Ranked candidates. Weighted outcomes.”
She glanced at him. “And?”
“And you would not have been first,” he said, then froze. “That sounded—”
She laughed. Sharp, breathless. “No. That’s honest.”
He relaxed by a fraction.
“But the crown does not answer to me,” Owain continued. “And neither do the spirits. They chose the disruption. The variable.” He met her eyes through the eyes of the lion, earnest and a little helpless. “Which means… they expect something only you can do. I simply do not know what it is yet.”
The room felt quieter after that.
“…You’ll still stand for me?” she asked.
Owain lifted his head then—not fully, not enough to break the posture.
“I serve the throne,” he said. “Not the path that led you to it.”
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”
“It is not meant to comfort you.”
That made her laugh despite herself—soft, a little brittle.
“Then what is it meant to do?”
He rose at her gesture this time, slow and precise, armor shifting as he stood.
“It is meant to remind you,” he said, “that the crown does not choose the certain. It chooses the one who will carry what remains.”
Shandrea swallowed.
The Blue Kingdom had remains. Ash. Broken banners. Names carved too fresh into stone.
“I don’t know if I can,” she admitted quietly.
Owain inclined his head—once.
“Then you will learn,” he said. “And until the crown leaves your brow, my life is its shield.”
Not hers. Never hers.
She rubbed at her eyes. “What if I just… didn’t do it? What if I ran. Left the crown on the table and disappeared before I break something else.”
The words hung there, fragile.
Owain dropped to one knee.
Not sharply. Not dramatically. Just—certain.
“If you run,” he said, voice steady but warm in a way he couldn’t quite hide, “I will follow until you stop.”
Her head snapped up. “That’s not—you’re not supposed to—”
“I am devoted to the crown,” he said. “And the crown has chosen you. Therefore—” He hesitated, then finished, softer. “—my devotion goes where you go.”
Silence.
“…That feels like cheating,” she muttered.
“It is called loyalty,” Owain replied. “I take it seriously.”
Shandrea swallowed, then nodded once.
“Okay,” she said quietly. “Then… stay.”
He bowed his head.
“Always.”
And somehow, that was enough to let her breathe.

(this is for my whitepine x vsmp au bc im close to finishing the first couple chapters)(uploads would be every other week)
edit: FUCK I FORGOT THURSDAYS…
wait okay for my swapped bannerfall au everyones swapped classes with the person they were body swapped into during the circus vod (a LOT of rambles under cut <3)
so like knights it'd be: blues 1. shandrea of the tides 2. scott springwell reds 1. lady kitty (or luanne as they most likely will be referred to as) 2. sir cam 3. frogue (or martyn?) 4. sausage
mages: blues 1. owain, prophet of the (mage/knight?) god 2. lady graecie 3. mae maezes reds 1. lady apokuna 2. bek of yamon
rogues: blues 1. nom reds 1. katie 2. cherri
the only two are 4c and el.. which would mean rogue!el and knight!4c? the thing abt it is the reds only have two mages (bc of el's absence) and i'm counting cherri as a mage (mainly bc mage!owain is very peak <3)(and also to replicate her turning into a knight maybe, owain could be the prophet of the knight god? idk)(also for owains desing he'll wear a veil to cover up his failures <3)
mage powers are confusing bc like i like prophet owain... but i have NO CLUE for the rest... like...
mae could be a cool light mage possibly? maybe that ties into "star" (but i rly dont want her magic to read like a copy of c!scott...) graecie could be some sort of elven magic obvi but like idk what type of elf she is (thinking nature? idk if its confirmed)
most of them will have some what similar backstories but slightly different to match their class. like kitty/luanne probably will remain a cat-turned-human due to its importance in his story (but more like post canon training ig? but if that training was before and not done by sir owain?)
cherri and apo are gonna be interesting... tbh what ive been thinking is like cb!cherri for cherri and more like that dynamic of them ig? but also still need those solunarian ties.. so idk.
frogue/martyn's gonna be confusing as hell bc he needs to stay a frog (same thing with kitty, its important to his character) but does that make ANY sense for knight!frogue???? (also he might have some older ties with soluna as well.... as a certain king's hand)
for shandrea, i kinda only have her design down (very mimicking of owains except silver with a blue sash with wave-like embroidery, and ofc without the mask). i jst rly dont know what to do for a backstory bc like, i mean i could do liek the same backstory jst minus magic and with her swords (duel wielding :3) instead?? idk :P
nom and katie are fun lol. i think katie would be more like a bard than rogue ig? and nom would be more rogue-like. for their backstory, i have like no ideas.... still need to be on opposite sides... but like..?????
owains backstories gonna be very similar except maybe he predicted king arthur's death? might lean into the whole the gift of prophecy is more a curse than blessing? maybe like cassandra vibes? idk
scotts's in gonna be the same tbh except hes a knight (and his mother died due to war/fighting instead of magic)(still had dreams to be a florist)
thats most of my ideas lol (feel free to add more :D /nf!!)
random applekiss idea but 2006!shelby keeps seeing apo. but its never them.
