I pity Luxaar. I’d described him as existentially confused; He clearly devotes himself to the Great One and the Samaarians, he defines himself and the rest of the Ganglion by them. He spends what he initially believes to be his final words on wishing he could see the Great One again; Indicating he actually knew Void in-person, suggesting in another line that Void referred to him by name.
Void was his creator, his God. And then he finds out that the Ganglion were made to be a subservient caste to Humanity. They were made to be lesser to another group who didn’t fight beside the Great One, who wasn’t even on the same level of technology at this point! There’s already an existential dread in realizing your existence is beneath that of others but this was salt in the wound.
Not only that but Ganglion DNA was literally hardwired to burn at the contact of humanity’s; Meaning that in your very nature you are doomed to be in conflict with one another. Maybe technology could work around this but if humans were given the same technology as the Ganglion, then what is there to stop them from exploiting their DNA?
Luxaar so deeply resents this undeniable fact, he resents that the Great One would demean him and his entire race to these newcomers. And yet he can’t bring himself to hate the Great One. But he must question him. He hates humanity but reaches a cognitive dissonance in his need to revere Void, but as far as Luxaar knows Void intended this. God made you this way but how can you blame God as well, how can you disagree with him and only accept the rules of God that work in your favor?
So Luxaar pivots all of his wrath towards humanity, the inherently hostile nature of their DNA means it could never be as simple as learning to defy your mutual creator together and co-existing. The Ganglion were literally made to be warlike so perhaps it’s no wonder they presume humanity as an inevitable threat. I mean have you seen humans? Many would take advantage of this power.
And Luxaar navigates the cognitive dissonance by simply pretending the prophecy doesn’t exist. And yet if it might then that’s such an existential threat that he has to act as if it does, to be safe. It’s such a contradiction. Like I bet his war with the Ghosts was just a ruse to cover up destroying Earth in the crossfire, to pass it off as collateral and not his entire goal because if Luxaar is explicit about destroying humanity then.
Then he admits they are a threat. That he at least considers the prophecy true. Because what other reason would he have to bother if not threatened? What other reason to be threatened if not because it were true? But if it were true, then Luxaar admits that the Great One whose creed forms the basis of Ganglion superiority also decrees that humans are better. He can’t believe his God betraying him like that but he did, but he can’t accept it. So what is he doing challenging his creators like that?
He can’t have it both ways but Luxaar mentally crashes out and tries to anyway. He flips on whether the prophecy is real or not on convenience, because he never heard Void say it himself and surely Void would’ve told him if so. He saves face by saying it’s just because humans are lesser and some like Ryyz buy it. But others can tell that Luxaar actually believes deep down that it’s the opposite, which scares the hell out of them because then it is true and not only are they screwed but they’re also committing blasphemy and maybe they could’ve survived if they just kept their heads down as they were supposed to; For some commanders, they already do this under Luxaar anyhow!
I think of how a lot of leaders aren’t sure if a religion is true or not but they act as if it is to seize power. Luxaar is a reverse case; He knows it’s true but he pretends otherwise to maintain Ganglion supremacy. His dialogue, I feel, insinuates he genuinely believes in the Great One, esp if he knew him personally. And I suppose given the Ganglion past of subjugating others it’s karmic. But also it’s inherently atrocious to pivot any race as more or lesser than another. And they were literally made to be like this.
And what does it mean for Luxaar anyway? Does Void bat an eye in his direction? He so clearly misremembers Void as caring far more than he ever did. He hesitates to use Void’s physical avatar for himself, but at some point I imagine it occurred to him that if he’s already defying the Great One’s hierarchy by slaughtering humanity, the he may as well do it one more time by wielding the Vita for himself. Surely HE is worthy to speak on behalf of Void because he has his DNA!
I’m not saying Luxaar is like a woman to me but I will say the first comparison I can think of is when a wife is so jealous of her husband’s mistress. Rather than direct her anger at the husband, she designates the mistress as a scapegoat. Sometimes she isn’t even a mistress at all! But in the end she has to consider this a threat to her position because if her husband leaves her, she has nothing, especially back in the day when women had less rights. Hell it’s still a problem now.
Luxaar, in his eyes, is not in a position to do away with Void’s judgment of who matters or not because it’s what makes the Ganglion and himself matter in the first place. And the best way he can reconcile all of these contradictions is to tell himself he’s competing with humanity for Void’s favor, that this is all a test by the Great One to prove the Ganglion still have a place by him. It was never real it was just a trial and he’s going to pass by being faithful by playing along at all. Luxaar’s final words are pure despair: That as much as he tried to dance around, bargain with the truth, it was indeed the truth. And it literally ate him alive.
The sad thing about Xenoblade Chronicles X is that humanity IS an existential threat to the Ganglion; No wonder Luxaar denies humanity as not the “cure” but the “disease” and the “cancer.” The prophecy the Ganglion fear was true. And alas on humanity’s end, they never asked to be given this power. And yet they just suffer from it, from the jealousy and fear of a race that feels betrayed and abandoned and its place threatened; Replaced for the shinier, newer toy that was just made to be better and never fought and won to prove it deserved that place… Until now. Thus making the self-fulfilling prophecy this game is about.
