➵ what letter (chapter 18) ( + written part)
! written part (1.4k)
The house Karina lives in was big, which you expected since she lives with five boys. You never questioned why, and it wasn’t something that concerned you. Your only hope was not to interact much with the boys, and you specifically didn’t want to see Sunghoon’s face.
Ever since that tweet from Heejin, you couldn’t help but feel a slight letdown. He had told you he was ditching you for a meeting and then somehow ended up in a cafe sleeping with Heejin playing with his hair. Is it a bitter feeling? Yes, perhaps it is. But you need to get it off your mind and focus on the sole reason you and Sunghoon are talking again; the project.
When you ring the bell, you expect an immediate buzz to let you inside, considering how excited Karina was when she invited you over. She also promised you that she would precisely be the one to let you in, probably knowing a little about your relationship with the boys.
So imagine your surprise when the voice coming out of the buzzer isn’t Karina’s but a male’s. It’s impossible not to recognize the voice of the person you grew up with. The door opens, and you’re face to face with Jay, who, with his wet hair and towel around his neck, looks like he just got out of the shower. You stare at him in a daze.
“Are you going to come in?” He asks you gruffly. You blink several times and finally snap back to reality, “Oh, yes, sorry.” You step inside the house and stare at Jay as he closes the door behind you. He looks so different yet similar at the same time. Is that possible? His hair, which was blonde back in high school, was now back to its original color. He looks like he gained quite the good amount of muscle and grew into his features. He looks taller and has a much more serious aura around him.
Altough, maybe that was because of you right now. “I came here for Karina, is she–”
“Yeah, she told me. She had to take an extra shift, so she’ll be a little late.” He cuts you off, walking towards the kitchen, not waiting for you. “If she’s going to be late, I can leave and come back later.” You follow him and clutch your handbag a bit tighter. He’s acting a bit hostile. “Told her that. But she kindly asks you to stay here and wait for her.” He hands you a glass of water he just poured. You accept it with a silent ‘thank you’ and continue with your awkwards standing.
You don’t move one inch while Jay passes you for the living room. You turn around, and for the first time since you stepped inside, you take in the interior of the house. It definitely looks expensive, but you have a feeling that it Jay who probably owned this place before the rest moved in considering his parents.
“Seriously? Stop standing around like that. Just take a seat anywhere you want, the furnitures don’t bite.” You hear Jay sigh from his seat. You’re not sure if you should take offense at his tone are chuckle at his joke, which, by the way, was probably not said with genuine feelings. You bite the remark at the tip of your tongue and silently make your way to the single seat beside Jay while keeping a safe distance away from him.
“Do you want to–”
“How’ve you–”
You both stare at each other, now more awkward than ever. “Sorry, go ahead.” He let’s you speak first. “No, it’s fine! I just wanted to ask how life has been in general.” You try to smile to ease the obvious tension. Jay stares into your eyes with an indescribable look and leans back with his hands loose on his thighs. “There isn’t anything interesting going on. Same old stuff.” He shruggs.
“What major are you?” You try to continue the conversation.
“Business. Taking over the family business.” You don’t know if you were hallucinating but you sensed some stern emotions behind that sentence.
“I thought you were opposed to that. Do you still sing?” Jay always had one of the most lovely voices you’ve ever heard. You remember how he used to sing at the bonfires you all used to go at. A fool’s wish to miss those moments.
“That was back then. Time changes people you know? Not that you were around or anything.” He says with a final look at your face. That concluded it. One would think a person would grow out of there grudge after three years, but it seems that some people would like to stay bitter. You exaggeratedly sigh out of annoyance and stand up to get yourself another glass of water. “Alright, fine, act as you please.” You whisper as you leave him behind.
When you enter the kitchen you look around for the right cupboard, perhaps a bit aggressively though. You can’t help but be upset at the way Jay is acting with you. You know he’s Sunghoon’s friend, but he was your friend before he was his. The fact that he blindly took Sunghoon’s side and left you behind without letting you even talk with him was a pain close to heartbreak.
The funny thing is, you’re all fine with Sunghoon right now while he acts like a bitch towards you. Well, two could play the role. If he wants to be all bitter for whatever his reason is, you can push aside your kindness and act bitter back. Not like it was hard.
As you try to reach for a cup, finally founding the right place, you curse the gods for the lack of height they have given you. You weren’t short per say, you just weren;t long enough to reach that cupboard. Why was it so high up anyways? Sighing in annoyance, you’re about to give up when you feel a presence behind you. A hand goes over your head and takes a cup before closing the door. “You already had a glass at the table, but here you go.” Jay’s voice is a whisper and you can feel his breath in your ear. He was too close to you. You turn around in hopes of pushing him away but you are faced with his chest and the glass he’s holding while he looks down at you, again, with this indescribable look in his eyes.
“Thank you.” You whisper as you take the glass from his hands, still in the same position. He’s still staring at you and you somehow can’t bring yourself to push him away. He raises his hand to push a strand of hair behind your ear, “I never should’ve written that letter.” He says it so quick and breathy that you barely catch it, but it has you freezing in your spot forgetting about his hand still behind your ear.
Seems like both of you were engrossed with whatever was going on in that moment that it took you both off guard when someone deliberately coughs in front of you. Both you and Jay turn your heads around to see Karina staring at you with a worried gaze, and Sunghoon with pursed lips and a hard look. “Are we interrupting something?” Sunghoon’s voice snaps you back to reality and you push away Jay while looking at Karina with wide eyes, hoping she’ll sense your panic.
“I was just giving her a cup. I’ll leave you guys be.” Without another word Jay leaves the room with all three of you staring at him. You turn to look at Sunghoon to see him still staring at where Jay left. You hold yourself from explaining yourself guessing how you and Jay must’ve looked. You don’t need to explain anything to him, but some part of you still feels like you owe him one.
“Well, now that I’m here, let’s go Y/n!” Karina starts dragging you away from the tense atmosphere and you thank your luck stars for her smart brain. Just as you both go out the door, you catch the glimpse of Sunghoon silently looking at you.
Karina’s closing the door by the time you notice the heavy look in his eyes. You’re gone with too many questions stuck in your throat.
