My friends often make fun of me for what they call the "creepy scientist in a horror movie" instinct and this might be another example. But if vampires reassemble, couldn't Carlisle cut off like his finger, do a biopsy and have a good look under the microscope, and then stick it back on? Or get Edward to be his little anatomy study test subject where he gets dissected and Carlisle has a proper poke around inside and then stitch him back up? Edward would love anything where he gets to suffer and I think if Carlisle really cared about studying vampires he could find a way to do it.
