       There's a tense silence— one in which Isabelle isn't sure how to disturb, and so it stretches longer, growing more and more uncomfortable until she feels fit to burst.

       ❛ I don't believe you, ❜  she retorts belatedly, her tone laced with equal parts frustration and faith,  ❛ I don't believe that you would choose cruelty when the alternative is helping someone. ❜

       She doesn't need to know Lupin intensely to think this; all she needs is to sink her heels deeper into the mud that entrenches her hope. Cynicism is something that Isabelle knows well. Before Monument Day, she lived on the assumption that people had her worst interests at heart, keen to turn her in unsavoury directions should she be dumb enough to trust them like she was when she was younger. That all there was to look forward to was the next time she'd feel a knife lodged in her back.

       Then she'd met the Sisters. And then Laurent had been born.

       She'd never wanted children, but her sister's baby falling into her hands had been the best thing that had happened to her in a long time. Over the years she's spent raising him within the safety of the convent, her eyes have been drawn to the good left in the world. Though she isn't an optimist by any stretch of the imagination, she's made room for the concept of altruism. Entertains it.

       ❛ You aren't going to convince me of this Big Bad routine, Lupin. Maybe you think it's mysterious or alluring of you to claim that you're not a good person but it's not. It's just a lie. Forgive me for seeing through it. ❜
