The World - “Some Like It Hot”
There’s an irony in the fact that while we have more access than we ever did to music these days as well as avenues to get there, some bands who may not have the resources to fund a publicist that puts them on Pitchfork or Stereogum or Noisey or the Fader just end up getting lost in the white noise of the Internet. Recommended Listen isn’t devoid of missing something along the way either, yet that doesn’t make it all the less frustrating to realize that on the final days of 2017, this site would find out that Oakland DIY scene post-punkers the World evidently had released their debut full-length FIRST WORLD RECORD back in October. They’re a band +RL had been anticipating to hear more from ever since fellow Bay Area punks CEREMONY co-signed them with opening act status in the past year, as the quintet -- which features the likes of garage rock scene constant Andy Human as well as two sax players in Alexa Pantalone and Stanley Martinez -- are an artful brass-attack of cacophony that sounds altogether delightfully terrifying as it does fun, as if Springsteen on Broadway took a wrong turn down the dark alleys of reality. Think of their fellow experimental politi-punks like PRIESTS and Downtown Boys if they were the hired house hand to play a dance party, and you’ve got the World. For a better idea, album standout “Some Like It Hot” is a jittery conflict between tightly wound elastic bass lines, funky fancy foot work, and vocalist Amber Sermeno deadpanning melody into a global warming nightmare. In case you missed it, it makes for something to hold you over during these slow points in the new music schedule, and in this case, food for thought whhile you’re freezing your ass off in the winter.
