âstarconchâ
Lumine couldnât sleep. It was one of those nights where her mind had started to go down the rabbit hole of her missing brother, and her mind just couldnât quiet no matter how hard she tried.Â
She decided to stroll around Liyue Harbor, where she was currently staying while helping out Zhongli. Paimon wanted to accompany her, but Lumine insisted that the tiny fairy stayed put. She wanted to be alone for a while. She loved Paimon, and how the little guide would take her mind off things, but she wanted some quiet.Â
Even at night, the harbor was still aglow with life, the lanterns hazily casting a romantic light on the stone pathways while soft chatter filled the air from restaurants and shops. The smell of barbecue meat and grilling fish wafted through the air.Â
Walking through the streets, Lumine smiled, just a bit. She couldnât help but feel a little warmer being in Liyue. Her stay in Mondstadt had been a stressful time, relatively speaking. Here in Liyue, however, she felt like she could breatheâeven if just for a littleâand meeting these odd characters had put some laughter in her heart. She was glad to have met these people: Zhongli, Qiqi, and yes, even Childe.
Lumine pursed her lips. Childe. A member of the Fatui. A Harbinger.Â
She was still wary of him, of course, but he hadnât done anything to hurt her or her friends...yet. In fact, she had to admit, he had helped her (and Zhongli) out a lot recently. So, her guard was coming down. Just a bit.Â
Lumine sighed as she approached the edge of the village. Now what?
She could turn around and head back to Paimon, but her mind didnât feel quite settled yet. She looked ahead of her; she could either go down to the docks, or to the little stretch of beach down the way. Not wanting to talk to the boat workers, she set off towards the beach.Â
The sounds of the harbor faded and gave way to gentle rustling of waves lapping against the shore as she approached the beach. As she walked closer to the water, she noticed a figure in the sand. She stopped and squinted, assessing whoâor whatâwas ahead of her.Â
Definitely human. Looked like they were wearing gray attire. A red mask atop a heap of orange-brown hair.Â
Childe?
He sat in the sand, looking out at the endless sea, with his elbows on his knees. He was mindlessly turning something in his hand, over and over again. It looked like a seashell.
His usually cheerful face was...forlorn. Lumine had never seen him look so sad.Â
Should I leave him be? Looking at his somber expression, she decided he probably wanted to be left alone.Â
She went to step back, when suddenly she tripped over a half buried boat sticking out of the sand with a loud THUNK.Â
WHOOSH. There was the sound of rushing water, and Lumine looked up to see Childe had drawn his bow, and was aiming directly at her head. His icy blue eyes met hers. The cloudy darkness in them dissipated upon seeing who it was.Â
âLumine?â he said, lowering his bow. It vanished with a splash. âWhat are you doing here?â
She swallowed the initial fear down her throat. âI couldnât sleep.â She shrugged. âWhat about you?âÂ
He gave her a tight smile. âI guess itâs the same for me. The sea has always been calming.âÂ
There was a slight hint of resentment. Was he lying? Why would he lie about that?
âWould you agree?â Childe asked.Â
Lumine walked and stood next to him. âYes, I would say so.âÂ
He sat down. âSit with me,â he invited. She did.Â
The two sat side by side, silently listening and watching the water lap up near them.Â
Lumine glanced at Childe. His expression resonated a deep sadness, something she never expected from him. What is he thinking?
Childe caught her gaze. Lumine quickly turned her head back towards the water, her cheeks feeling warmer than before.Â
He chuckled. âIs there something on my face?âÂ
âNope.â
âWhatever you say.âÂ
Without even looking at him, she could hear his smirk in his voice.Â
She turned her attention to the sand, noticing a blue shell. She picked it up, dusting it off. It was one of the shells Childe had in his hand. A blue striped shell, with what looked like a star in the middle.Â
âA starconch.âÂ
Lumine looked at Childe; he was holding up his own conch, staring at hers.Â
âThey say if you hold it close to your ear, you can hear the longing calls of the sea.âÂ
Longing.Â
She hesitantly raised it to her ear.
âWhat do you hear?â he asked.Â
She closed her eyes and listened. After a beat, she swore she heard laughter. A laugh she hadnât heard for an eternity.Â
Aether.Â
Her heart clenched.Â
âIâŚâ She bit the inside of her cheek. âI hear my hometown,â she lied.Â
His eyes held on her for a long second, then he looked out at the vast ocean.Â
âI hear a whale.â He raised his own starconch up to his ear. âWhales, you know, call out to each other underwater. Itâs quite loud.â He closed his eyes. âBut sometimes we canât even hear them. Sometimes, they canât even hear each other.âÂ
âHow sad,â he said. He closed his fist around the starconch. âHow incredibly...lonely.âÂ
Yes, very.Â
Did Childe lose someone close to him as well? Did he never have anyone to begin with?Â
She frowned looking at him. How much she missed his boisterous chuckles right now.Â
Lumine grabbed his hand. His head snapped to what she was doing.
âWhat are you-â
âHere,â she said, shoving her starconch into his palm.Â
He raised an eyebrow. âWhy are you giving this to me?â
She closed his fingers around it. âMaybe your whale wonât be so lonely anymore.â
Childe stared at her.Â
Then, a smile. Soft.Â
It was a genuine smile, Lumine could tell. One buried deep within. She returned his smile.Â
âYes,â Childe said. âI donât think heâs so lonely anymore.â
The ideas may be a bit too ooc but I do hope this will help you from your writer's block :>

âfamily holidayâ (pt 1)
âLumineeeeee!â Teucer shouted as she walked through the door of Childeâs home. He tackled her into a hug.Â
âWell hello to you too, Teucer,â Lumine greeted back. Just as energetic as I rememberedâŚÂ
âHey! Paimonâs here too!â Paimon crossed her arms.Â
Teucer broke his hug and waved energetically at Paimon. âHi, Lumineâs toy!â
Paimonâs jaw dropped, ready to go on a rant, but Teucer already turned his attention away.Â
âBig brother!â he cheered, tackling Childe into a hug as well.Â
âTeucer!â Childe said enthusiastically, picking him up and slinging the little boy over his shoulder before swinging him around. Teucer erupted into gleeful giggles.Â
âBig brother? Is that you?â a soft voice called. Coming down the grand stairs was a little girl who looked exactly like Childe and Teucer, her long brown hair tied in a half-up crown braid, her large blue eyes like innocent doe eyes. She looked about eight. Behind her, another sibling came trudging down the stairs, scowling, his hair appearing more ginger than the rest of the family; his face had a splattering of freckles across his nose and cheeks, more prominent than Teucerâs. He was a bit older, around 11.Â
Childe set Teucer down, and smiled. âTonia,â he greeted her, gentler. He got down on one knee, and Tonia ran down the stepsâher white dress flowing behind herâand jumped into his open arms.Â
âItâs been too long!â she said, her voice muffled by Childeâs shoulder.Â
He laughed. âIt certainly has, princess.â He looked to the last sibling still standing by the stairs. âCome on, Anthon. Come here.â
Anthon let out an exasperate huff, but still made his way to his older brother, and joined Tonia in their embrace. âWe donât have to make such a big deal out of this,â he grumbled, though his arms tightening around his brother betrayed his attitude.Â
âLooks like weâve been sidelined,â Paimon muttered.Â
Lumine tilted her head. âItâs kind of nice to see thoughâŚâÂ
Anthonâs eyes flickered to her. âWho are you?â
Tonia broke from the hug, ducking under Childeâs arms to look at Lumine, while still gripping tightly to his jacket.Â
Teucer bounced over to the traveler, and placed his hands proudly on his hips. âLadies and Gentlemen, this is Lumine!â
Tonia gasped and skipped over to her, her eyes bright. âLumine?! Like from the letters?â Teucer nodded enthusiastically.Â
Childe stood and rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. âYup, the one and only. This is her first time in Snezhnaya, so everyone be on your best behavior.â He gave Anthon a look, to which Anthon crossed his arms.Â
âItâs nice to finally meet you, Tonia and Anthon,â Lumine said. âYour brothers have told me a lot about you two.â
Tonia smiled shyly and peered at Lumineâs face. âWoooow,â she whispered in wonderment. âYou really are just as pretty as he said!âÂ
Lumine felt a shock to her system. Childe told them I was pretty?
Childe let out a nervous laugh, quickly scooping Tonia off the ground and ruffling her hair. âVery funny, Tonia! Why donât we decide on dinner plans, hmm?âÂ
Paimon, after grumbling in the corner about being ignored, perked straight up. âFood?â
âLetâs celebrate brother and Lumine coming home! We should go to the bestest restaurant in the city!â Teucer suggested.Â
âYou donât want to eat brotherâs cooking?â Tonia asked, a bit of sadness tinged in her voice.Â
âI think thatâs a great idea, Teucer,â Childe said. He patted Toniaâs head. âHow about we eat dinner at the restaurant, then we can come home and Iâll make you your favorite cake?âÂ
âYay!â Tonia cheered, jumping from Childeâs arms, and joining Teucer in celebration.Â
âAnthon? What would you like to do?â Childe asked.Â
He shrugged. âWhatever sounds good to me.âÂ
âThen itâs settled! Letâs all go get ready then, okay?â Childe said. The children all ran up the stairs, and soon the foyer was quiet once more. The Harbinger let out a heavy sigh.Â
âWhew! Theyâre a handful!â Paimon said.Â
Lumine nodded. âHow do they even survive while youâre away?â
Childe chuckled. âYear round I have a dedicated staff of servants and maids to look after them and the house.â (Mansion, Lumine thought.) âI gave them the weekend off while Iâm back.â
âYou can handle all three of them?â Lumine asked.Â
âOh? You donât think Iâm capable?âÂ
âI just canât imagine you as a child raising type,â she said, recalling their various battles together. How bloodthirsty he could get.Â
âThe battlefield is different,â he said, as if reading her thoughts. He glanced at the stairs. âIâve been raising my siblings since we were little.âÂ
No parents? She thought of her and Aether. On their own for as long as she could remember, having to explore and learn alone. Except she and Aether were twins; she never had to look after a younger siblingâlet alone three.Â
âReady!â Teucer announced, bouncing down the stairs.Â
Childe crossed his arms. âJust your hat? Where are your gloves? Coat? Boots?âÂ
Teucer giggled. âOops! I forgot!â He raced back up the stairs.Â
âAnd you?â he asked, turning to Lumine. âYou donât look ready either.â
âI was okay on the journey here,â she answered. âIâm sure Iâll be fine.â
He shook his head. âItâs almost dark now. Snezhnayan nights are freezing, even more so during this time.â
âAhh...well...we didnât really pack...anythingâŚ,â Paimon said sheepishly.Â
âPaimon I expected, but you, Lumine?âÂ
The traveler crossed her arms. âIâve been a bit busy.âÂ
He scoffed. âRight, right. Well, we canât have you freezing to death in the street. Iâm sure thereâs extra coats around here,â he said, heading up the stairs. âCome with me.â
âOooo, Lumine, theyâre probably super expensive and fluffy! Letâs go!â Paimon said, flying after Childe. Lumine rolled her eyes and followed.Â
The three passed by the childrenâs rooms, all clothes being thrown around and excited chatter, before coming to a large door at the end of the hall. Childeâs room. He opened the door and they entered.Â
It was a grand roomâoctangular in shape with huge windows and a tall ceilingâlarge, spacious, and empty save for a large bed, standing wardrobe, and side tables. There was a fine film of dusting covering all the surfaces, and the bed looked like it hadnât been slept in for a long time. The colors were sparse, only grays, whites, blacks, and the occasional red accent.Â
Childe opened the doors to the wardrobe, revealing an assortment of heavy winter coats. He pulled one out and held it out for Lumine. âI think this coat is a little olderâprobably the smallest one I have.âÂ
She put it on, the sleeves running a bit long to her fingertips, the feathered hood obscuring her face up to her nose. Childe laughed, and she stuck her tongue out at him after pulling the hood down. Despite it being old, she could still pick up a faint scent of Childe: a smell remnant of ocean waves and sandy beaches. Unexpectedly pleasant...
âIf thatâs too big, she can have one of my coats!â Tonia said from the doorway. Â
âThat is very nice of you to offer, Tonia,â Childe said. âBut I think your coats might be too small.â
âOh,â she said. âWell, weâre all ready now, brother!â
The familyâplus Lumine and Paimonâgathered back in the foyer with everyone bundled in their coats, hats, and gloves. And then they were on the way to the restaurant.Â
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
âLumine, look!â Teucer said, pointing at a large pond. âThere are so many fishes!â
They were waiting to be seated in the restaurant lobby. A large, grandiose building, with marbled floors, vaulted ceilings, and gold furniture. There was a large pond in the middleâa miniature waterfall flowed into it.Â
Too extravagant, Lumine thought. And I thought Liyue was expensive...
âDo you think we could take some fish home to eat?â Paimon asked, peering into the pond.Â
Lumine gave her a deadpan expression. âGo ahead. Iâve always wanted to see how Snezhnayans deal out punishment.â
âOn second thought, nevermindâŚâ
Tonia pulled on Childeâs jacket. âCan we go to the toy store after this?â
âToy store! Toy store! Toy store!â Teucer chanted.Â
âYes, yes, of course,â Childe said. The two children cheered.Â
âTheyâre always so loud,â Anthon grumbled from his seat next to Lumine.Â
âTheyâre just excited your brother is back,â Lumine said. âArenât you excited also?â
âI guessâŚâ He looked at her. âWhy are you here anyways?â
How do I explain that Iâm on a quest to find my brother after we were banished from our journeys by an unknown god? âI want to meet all the gods of Teyvat.â
He scoffed. âYeah, right. Thatâs impossible.â
âActually Iâve been quite successful,â she told him. âIâve already met a few.â
âReally?â His brows were furrowed. âWhatâre they like?â
Venti: drunk. Zhongli: broke. âTheyâre...interesting. Very powerful.â
Childe walked over to them. âIs he bothering you?â he asked Lumine.Â
âShe was just telling me sheâs met some of the gods of Teyvat. Is that true?â he asked, scrutinizing.Â
âVery much so. Sheâs quite strong, so donât get on her bad side.â He gave Anthon a wink.Â
âPaimon can confirm that! We kicked his butt!âÂ
For the first time, Anthonâs eyes seemed to light up. âYou did? How?â
Childe chuckled through gritted teeth, disguised as a strained smile. âNow, now, Anthon; you seem like you want me to be beaten.â
Anthon frowned. âNo, I didnât mean that.â
âSir? Your table is ready,â a waiter said, approaching the family.Â
As Childe went to wrangle up the younger kids, Lumine stayed behind and tapped on Anthonâs shoulder.Â
âHey,â she whispered. âWhy do you want to beat your brother so bad?â
Anthon shook his head. âYou guys have it wrong. I donât want to beat my brotherâŚâ His pale face flushed a bit red. âI just...I want to be stronger than him. So he doesnât have to work so hard to protect usâŚâ He stopped and watched his siblings sit around the table in the distance. âHe shouldnât be the only one protecting us. I can see itâs really hard work for just him. I want to be strong enough to protect him, Tonia, and Teucer also.â
Lumineâs heart warmed at Anthonâs love for his family. She missed Aether a little more. âIâll help you.â She put a gentle hand on his shoulder. âI know what itâs like, wanting to protect a sibling.â She then gave him a teasing smile. âPlus, Iâve already beaten your brother, right?âÂ
âRight!â He had a little smile as well. âAnd heâs the strongest person I know! Well...I guess that person would be you now, right?â
Tonia came marching up to the two. âCome onnnnn, letâs go eat!â She grabbed both Lumine and Anthonâs hands and dragged them to the table.Â
Afterwards, the family enjoyed an exquisite meal, and were all stuffed full of expensive foods and cheerful laughter. (The children were amazed at how much both Lumine and Paimon could scarf down.)Â
The children, very quickly after finishing their meal, practically teleported to the toy store. As the children ran through the store, Lumine and Childe took the moment of rest, silently watching over them. (Paimon had retreated back into her world to recover from the feast.)
âI donât know how you do it,â Lumine said. âI had a hard enough time with just Teucer in Liyue.â
âItâs not easy,â Childe confessed. He looked at his siblings softly. âBut when I see them smiling and happy...despite everything bad in the world? I think itâs all worth it.â
How nice⌠His love for his family definitely matched her love for Aether. Something we have in common. She found herself enjoying this time with Childe, and his family, more enjoyable than any time she had been adventuring. It was almost like...she was...back homeâŚ
Soon enough, everyone was lined up, toys all selected and ready for purchase. Teucer tiredly tugged on Lumineâs coat, then silently held his hands up. At first, Lumine blinked, not understanding.Â
âTeucer, just ask her to pick you up,â Anthon said.Â
âThatâs okay,â she said, pulling Teucer up off the groundânow understandingâand placing him on her hip. I think this is how you carry a kid? She didnât have much experience with kids, save for the few she had met while in Teyvat. And those kids are far from normal... She let out a little sigh of relief when Teucer relaxed, laying his head on her shoulder.Â
âAre you tired too, Tonia?â Childe asked. She shook her head, tightening her grip on his hand, clutching a doll in the other. Teucer was hugging a hilichurl stuffed animal, and Anthon held an action figure of a Lawachurl.
Upon reaching the toy seller, the old woman at the counter smiled at Childe and Lumine. âYou two have such beautiful children,â she said.Â
Lumine almost dropped Teucer. What?!Â
âThough I have to say, they do take after their father quite a bit,â she remarked. âA shame, seeing as the mother is so beautiful.âÂ
Before Lumine could explain, Childe spoke. âYes, what a shame indeedâI completely agree,â he said while smiling.Â
