This is a topic that I feel like needs to be looked up outside of tumblr; bc a lot of things have been taken out of context with no sources provided and are fueled by hatred for a character he plays; all the interviews i've seen with him, at the very least, have been him being very critical about the 'why' he joined

Nancy's trauma over Barb's death was also a factor. Steve never really understood what Nancy was going through, which isn't necessarily his fault but still.

I’d buy that more if the show had her actually properly discuss Barb’s death with Steve or showed him to be unsupportive re: Barb’s death but they didn’t. In fact, Steve went with Nancy to Barb’s parents for dinner and you could tell that he’d done that many times before even though he had no ties to Barb.
