I checked my phone as I stood in the short line in the little cafe, finding no new messages. I stepped up to the counter, ringing off mine and Sam's usual, knowing she'll want some caffeine when she wakes. A tabloid caught my eye, the cover plastered with pictures from Sam and I's interactions with Michael and Luke. "They work fast," I mumbled, picking it up and flipping through the numerous relationship speculations. I snapped a picture of the one page stating: "Michael and Jade couldn't get enough of each other!" and opened up Twitter, creating a new tweet and typing 'who even is michael clifford? ;)'. I attached the photo and sent it out, thanking the barista as I took the two drinks.
"Sammy, wake up before the ice melts in your coffee!" I shouted, barging into her room. She groaned, nuzzling farther into the sheets. I plopped down on her bed, pressing the cold cup against her bare cheek. She hissed at the contact and snatched the drink from my hands, sitting up and taking a sip. "Guess who made the front of the tabloids," I sang, pulling up the picture I snapped. "They definitely aren't wrong," she smirked.
"Speak of the devil," I mumbled as an unknown number called.
"Hello?" I answered, standing. Sam perked up and slid out of bed, trying to listen in. I playfully pushed her away but she sprang right back.
"Jade?" The other line questioned.
"Michael?"
"Yeah," he chuckled, nervously.
"Great party last night."
"Yeah, um. Look, I totally wouldn't be doing this if Luke wasn't sitting right next to me to make sure I did it but uh - "
"I also have a certain blonde friend tuning in too," I laughed and Sam just smiled.
"Hey Sam!" Another voice on the other end called out.
"What's up, Luke?" Sam chirped. I just sat back for a second, holding the phone out for Sam to talk.
"Oh, nothing much. Just making Michael ask Jade out on a date. He wouldn't stop talking about her after you guys left," he answered, followed by Michael groaning.
"I'll make sure she says yes, don't worry," Sam replied. After that I pulled the phone away from Sam and walked out into the living room for a little more privacy. There was then a thud and a door slam on their end so I assumed it was just us two now.
"Where would we be without our blondes, right?" I joked.
"Hopefully still on that date. Unless of course, you'd like to research who Michael Clifford is."
"Ah, you saw the tweet," I laughed, "Sorry, I was just born a smartass."
"Then we already have something in common."
We made plans to meet up at a local restaurant a few hours later and Sam made me promise to relay everything that happened to her once I got back. Michael was sitting on a bench right outside the restaurant and you could spot his green hair from a mile away.
"Hey there stranger," I greeted, causing his head to shoot up.
"Hi," he smiled, standing up. We walked in and took our seats, already giving the waitress our drink orders. His phone dinged with a new message and he glanced down, laughing and shaking his head.
"That was Luke, begging me to get Sam's number from you for him," he said.
"I guess Sam wouldn't mind," I joked, typing in Sam's number on his phone for him to send. He sent it out and locked his phone, sliding it in his pocket.
"Can I just say that you two are nothing like I expected," he mentioned.
"What were you expecting?" I asked.
"Honestly, something along the lines of coke-snorting, binge-drinking, party animals."
"That is... wow," I laughed. He shook his head and put his face in his hands.
"I am so sorry, I shouldn't have even brought that up."
"No, it's okay! I just find it so funny how badly tabloids can distort someone's image. It's like, you go to one party where there's cocaine and you're an addict!"
"Wait, so you have...?"
"No! We left as soon as we were offered any and went to Dairy Queen." We both laughed and were brought our drinks then, realized we hadn't even looked at the menu. Turns out, neither of us were really hungry and we decided to split a dessert.
"Don't you ever want people to know, like, the real you, though?" He questioned, handing his menu over to the waitress.
"I mean, I did at first but then we started getting asked to make appearances because we brought so much publicity and we just figured to go with it."
"Man, if I was paid to party," he reminisced and I laughed.
"We would much rather be doing what you guys do though, that was the intention but it still hasn't happened."
"Do you guys have like, a youtube channel?" He inquired, taking his phone back out.
"Yeah - you don't have to like tweet us out or anything, though. We're fine where we're at!"
"What's your channel name?" He grinned, youtube already pulled up. I sighed.
"Sam and Jade, but no spaces and it's with one of those eight-looking and symbols."
"I have never heard someone call that an 'eight-looking and symbol'," he muttered, smirking and typing it in. I felt my face flush and he tapped the acoustic version of one of our original songs.
"Michael, you really don't have to - "
"I want to. Now sh, it's loaded." He watched intently and I heard Sam's voice as she said hello and pulled out her guitar. He continued to watch and I nervously twirled the rings on my fingers, my anxiety levels skyrocketing.
"I'm tweeting you guys out daily, you're fucking awesome!" He announced, pausing the video with about 45 seconds remaining.
"Thanks," I squealed.
"And you're pretty cute when you're blushing too," he mumbled before glancing back down at his phone and opening up twitter. We picked at the dessert once it arrived, paying shortly after and walking out together. We had just started walking down the street when my phone buzzed with about four new messages. I pulled it out and found they were all from Sam and all in caps.
"Looks like Sam is excited about something," I murmured, unlocking my phone. I stopped dead in my tracks once I read them.
"What, is something wrong?" Michael questioned, turning towards me.
"We just gained over four thousand subscribers and the video you tweeted just hit half a million views," I explained.
"Gotta love the fam," Michael grinned and I couldn't help but throw my arms around him, catching him off guard. We stumbled back a little before his arms wrapped around my torso.
"You're welcome," he chuckled and I got another text from Sam reading 'JESUS CHRIST MICHAEL TWEETED US AND YOU DIDN'T BOTHER TO TELL ME'. I laughed and pulled away, typing an apology.
"Shit," Michael muttered, checking the time.
"What?"
"I gotta go, our flight takes off soon and I need to pack."
"Oh, well just keep in touch, yeah?"
"Of course," he grinned, leaning down and pecking my cheek.
"And while you do that, I am gonna get a cookie cake for Sam and I."
"We just had dessert," he chuckled.
"Sam didn't," I joked before we reluctantly said goodbye and parted ways.
But tonight my mom had the late shift and I dragged Michael over to skim through Netflix with me. He brought a box of popcorn with him and tossed a few pieces in his mouth as he waltz out of the kitchen. My phone dinged with a new message and I sifted it out of my pocket. It was an unknown number, the text reading: 'Guess whoo ;)'. I rolled my eyes, having an idea of who it could be.
'Calum, how did you even get my number?' I replied, stealing some of Michael's popcorn when he plopped down next to me. My phone dinged again and Michael casually glanced at the screen, reading the text: 'Luke should really consider putting a lock on his phone.. '
"Why should Luke put a lock on his phone?" He asked.
"Cause Calum stole my number off it," I muttered, not bothering to respond to the text.
"I'm telling you, that kid's a dick."
"He's like obsessed over this idea that he could steal me away from you." Michael laughed at the notion, slinging his arm around me.
"Yeah right, you're crazy about me," he pointed out, grinning.
"Only because you gave me no choice," I chuckled.
"That is not true."
"Michael, you told everyone in the school that we were in a relationship before you even spoke a word to me."
"Did you or did you not have a massive crush on me already?" I shook my head, trying to suppress the smile growing on my face. He set his popcorn on the coffee table, digging his fingers into my stomach.
"Answer the question, missy!" He demanded. I gasped for air, pushing at his hands.
"Yeah but you wouldn't have known that!" I shouted, his tickling finally ceasing.
"Doesn't matter, it was inevitable anyways so what's the difference?"
"The difference is that if I wasn't already into you I would've been massively pissed off."
"Lucky for me you weren't," he sang, dipping down to meet his lips with mine. My phone rang and I didn't bother looking at the caller ID, figuring it was Sam and answering.
"Hello?" I mumbled as Michael trailed kisses down my neck.
"You didn't respond to my text," Calum said.
"Well did it ever occur to you that I didn't want to?"
"Yeah, ya dickbag!" Michael shouted into the microphone. I giggled and pushed his face away.
"You know, you were a lot nicer the first night we met."
"I wouldn't have even acknowledged you if I knew you were going to insert yourself in my life."
"I figured you were just playing hard to get."
"I flat out told you I was in a relationship!"
"Yeah, well I get that now!"
"Great, see you around," I said sarcastically, abruptly ending the call. Michael was laid out on top of me, having been closely listening to the conversation.
"We should probably get him some ice for his bruised ego," he commented. I laughed and nodded my head.

I met up with Sam as her shift at Dairy Queen came to an end, finding her moping behind the counter in her polo and hat. I gave her that 'The Usual' look and she whipped up a sundae, sliding it across the counter in exchange for a 5.
"Luke and his brothers came in today," she mentioned as I took a spoonful, "I was mortified, Jade. Mortified."
"Why?" I questioned chuckling.
"Because I didn't bother to do my makeup earlier and you know how much I despise this uniform."
"I think you look cute," I chirped and she death glared me.
"Luke is your boyfriend now, he's locked in. Like a signed contract that a shitty polo cannot break."
"But still," she groaned, burying her face in her hands. She perked up when the clock read 10:50, running around back to grab her stuff. She met up with me at the exit and we walked out together while I finished the rest of my sundae.
"And for the road trip thing, there's this carnival a few towns over and I think we should just head that way and see what the world throws at us," I suggested, hopping in my car.
"We should daily vlog it!" Sam said, sliding into the passenger seat.
"Why would we record ourselves sitting in a car for eight hours?"
"I mean, I don't know. When Troye does it, it seems fun..."
"If that's what you want to do, of course we can daily vlog it."
"Woo! I'll dig out my camera and everything!" She cheered, flipping through stations as I drove over to her house. She unlocked the door when we arrived and we clambered upstairs to her bedroom. Clothes were scattered around the floor and she dug out her favorite pair of pajama shorts and a tee, changing out of her uniform. I plopped on her bed, kicking my shoes off and propping my feet up on a pillow at the edge of her bed.
"So, have you and Luke been up to anything lately?" I questioned absentmindedly.
"Not much interesting, just hanging out. But I swear, he's like falling in love with Calum. They call themselves Cake."
"Speaking of, I don't think he'll be a problem anymore."
"Jade, what did you do."
"Nothing I haven't been doing! He just seemed to finally realize that he has no chance at this hot piece of ass." Sam laughed, popping open her laptop.
"Well that's good. Hey, maybe he'll turn out to be a decent guy after his ego deflates," she shrugged, logging onto tumblr.
"Maybe," I hummed, letting my eyes flutter shut.

Today was the day we set off on our little road trip. I picked up drinks and snacks the night before, along with Sam who just stayed the night. Everyone was awake and ready to go by 10:30 and Michael picked up Luke on his way over to my house. He beeped when he pulled into my driveway and I yelled goodbye to my mom, slinging the duffel bag Sam and I decided on sharing over my shoulder. I trotted down the steps and out the front door, greeted by Michael and Luke both hopping out of the car.
"Morning sunshine," Michael said, walking over and taking my bag. I leaned up and pecked his lips, mumbling, "Morning." He went to put the bag in the trunk and I told Luke that I had snacks on the counter and asked for him to grab them. He nodded and walked inside, passing Sam who was already recording with her silver camera, and leaving a quick kiss to her temple.
"So you were serious about that," Michael said after slamming the trunk closed.
"Of course! This is gonna be great! I have extra batteries and chargers so we can document the whole thing!" She cheered, smiling.
"Coming through!" Luke called from behind her, carrying out the foam cooler I had assembled along with various chips and sweets. Sam whipped around, pointing the camera towards him and narrating.
"And this is my gorgeous boyfriend, Luke. Say hi!"
"We gotta leave now so we can beat rush hour traffic!" Michael announced, leaning on the car door. I turned to him and Sam followed Luke into the backseats.
"You know, there usually isn't rush hour traffic at 10:30," I told Michael.
"I know but I figured that would get her to stop recording." I whacked him in the arm before sliding into the passenger seat, and we were off.

"Do I think, what?" I asked, beginning to slice the fabric. She sighed and twiddled with the ring on her pinky finger.
"That Luke won't like me if we started dating?" I abruptly looked up at her.
"Sam - now I'm not about to tell you this because you're my best friend or to make you feel better. But he's smitten about you, and if he only knows the first few layers of you he's bound to love the rest."
"Are you implying that I'm an onion?" She questioned. I shook my head playfully and she laughed.
"But seriously," I started, "You have nothing to worry about."
"How do you know, though?" She asked hesitantly.
"Because my boyfriend is his best friend. And whatever he tells Michael about you, Michael tells me. And he'd probably kill Michael if he knew he was repeating that stuff so let's try not to mention that to him," I suggest, and she laughs again, nodding.
"Thanks Jade!" She exclaims, bouncing over to me and throwing her arms around my shoulders over dramatically.
"Yeah yeah, you're welcome," I say, and she releases me, watching as I quickly slice through the shirt. I even chopped off some of the bottom so the tops of her shorts will be more visible. She grabbed the shirt and went back to change again. I glanced down at my own tee, deciding it also needed some alterations and slipping it off, now standing in only my bandeau and leggings.
"You should definitely wear that for the party," Michael commented, sauntering in.
"Nice try," I replied. He smiled and walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my bare stomach.
"But you know I love it when you show off your belly ring," he mumbled against my skin, trailing kisses up to my lips. He spun me around and lifted me up, setting me down on top of the island without breaking the kiss.
"Michael, I have to get ready," I mumbled.
"Get ready later," he muttered back, pouting when I pulled away.
"Where's your tie-dye?!" I questioned, noticing his simple white tee.
"We both know we only made those to get Luke and Sam alone together," he acknowledged.
"I know but still."
"Speaking of Luke, I pierced his ear," he added, lighting up at his achievement.
"Michael!" I gasped.
"What?! I was bored and told him Sam thought piercings were hot, it's not like it was against his will," he clarified.
"You are marching right back upstairs and taking that stud out of his ear," I demanded, crossing my arms.
"It's a hoop but whatever," he murmured, dragging himself out. I slipped my shirt back on, now having it slide off my shoulder on one side. I looked up to find Sam slowly creeping in.
"Took you long enough," I remarked, striding over to the bags of accessories and decorations Michael and I had picked up earlier.
"Oh, I had changed a while ago but I didn't really want to interrupt you two." I chuckled and pulled various things out of the bags, walking down to the bathroom and motioning for Sam to follow. I dumped it all out on the counter, turning to Sam.
"Now it's time for the fun part."
By the time I was finished, it looked like we had walked out of a time machine. Sam was decked out in bangles, crazy blue eye shadow, and a side-pony that could kill. I had bright pink legwarmers, orange eye shadow, and a headband around a crazy mess of curls.
"Are you guys done in there? People are starting to show," Michael shouted, knocking on the door. Sam and I gathered the excess materials and opened the door.
"You look - " Michael began.
"Amazing, we know," I finished, grinning and pecking his lips before strolling passed him. Music played over the speakers and people were already picking at the snacks and drinks. Luke was leaning against the island, typing away on his phone when we entered. His ear was irritated but clear of any jewelry. Sam and I tossed what we had in our hands in the trash, most of it garbage anyways.
"Are you wearing guyliner?" Sam asked Luke.
"Michael said you liked it," he quickly defended. I whacked Michael and he snickered.
"I love it," Sam laughed and they went off into the ever growing crowd of people.
"That has got to stop," I told Michael.
"It's not hurting anyone," he chuckled, grabbing me by my waist and tugging me towards him.
"Well, let's not take any chances, okay?" I whispered, our lips inches apart. He stared down at mine with a smirk, mouthing an 'okay' before leaning down to meet them. He soon took my hand and broke away, only to walk out to the dance floor where we continued to kiss and sway to the music.

We were a few hours into the party by now; Michael was probably playing beer pong in the garage, Luke and Sam were who knows where, and I was out laying on the front lawn. As much as I loved a good party, I sometimes needed to get away for a bit. Away from all the loud music and obnoxious drunks. I never drank a lot either, maybe a cup here and there but I was never fond of the taste to begin with.
"Um, excuse me but uh, are you like... Alive?" Someone asked. I peered over and saw a guy; dark wavy hair, tan skin, about Michael's height, watching me curiously.
"Yeah, I'm good," I replied, glancing back up at the night sky.
"Any particular reason you're laying on the ground?"
I shook my head.
"I almost stepped on you, ya' know."
"I'm glad you didn't." There was a short silence and I saw him bite his lip from the corner of my eye. He was cute, unfamiliar though.
"I'm Calum," he introduced.
"Jade."
"Like the gemstone?" I propped up against my elbow, peering up at him.
"Exactly like the gemstone." No one has ever known about the gemstone until I told them. He smirked, laying next to me on the grass.
"Well gemstone Jade, what are you thinking about?"
"I'm wondering why you stumbled across this specific lawn on this specific night," I answered.
"I heard through the great vine that there was a party but, you seem more interesting."
"You know what else is interesting?"
"Hm?"
"My boyfriend with lime green hair."
"Ah, I see," he says, blush tinting his cheeks. "Where is this boyfriend, though?"
"Probably waiting for me to come back inside so he can do body shots off me."
"Oh, so you're into that sorta thing," he chuckled. I nodded and giggled, perking up when the front door slammed closed.
"Jade!" Sam called, smiling widely, "I found you."
"That you did Sammy," I laughed, noticing how she stumbled her way out to the lawn with Calum and I.
"Who's this?" She inquired, peering over to Calum.
"That's Calum," I replied.
"He's cute," she slurred, dropping down to the opposite side of me.
"Right back at ya," Calum smirked.
"No, nope nope. Back off casanova, she's in a... thingy with another... thing..." I defended, not knowing how to label Sam and Luke's relationship.
"It's okay Jade, my heart belongs to Luke," Sam clarified, resting her palm on her chest.
"Speaking of, where is Luke?" I inquired, turning towards her.
"He's probably still in the kitchen. We were playing this game and he suggested we mix alcohol with it but then I missed you so I went looking for you and then I found you and now - "
"Okay, that's all I needed to know, Sammy," I cut her off before she started confusing herself.
"Jade, I don't like alcohol," she shouted, her lips dipping into a frown.
"So don't drink anymore, sweetie," I coaxed, kind of loving buzzed Sam. She continued to frown before mumbling something about a hug and throwing her arms around me.
"You're so smart," she murmured, burying her face into the crook of my neck. Calum silently laughed beside us, watching as she stood up and strolled back inside.
"She's gonna be a wreck in the morning," Calum said.
"Tell me about it," I muttered. Silence washed over us again, minutes passing before he rolled over on his side and held his hand out.
"Lemme see your phone."
"Calum - "
"Yeah, I know. He has lime green hair and likes licking up your stomach, but c'mon. You still interest me and I still want to learn more about you."
"I bet you use that line on all the girls you find lying in front lawns." I smirked and pushed myself up, brushing off my backside as I walked up to the front door.
"This isn't over!" He called out as I opened the door.
"Yes it is," I yelled back, closing the door behind me.
