TWDG Rarepairs week, Day 7: free day: skating/and life goes on
This one’s extremely late I’m sorry
Ship: lujavi (Luke x Javi)
Words: 1 595
It was the second winter since Luke arrived at Richmond and it was surely a cold one. Luke and Javi were crossing the forest near their home, Javi leading him somewhere only he knew. Both had a bag on their back, Luke had a couple of blankets and Javier had... Well, Luke was about to find out real soon now. They were getting further from the gate and eventually, Javi stopped with a smile, looking at the frozen lake in front of them. Luke sent him a confused look, so the man took off his bag and opened it to reveal two pairs of skates. Luke looked into the bag, then at Javi, then into the bag, back at Javi... He did that a couple of times before he backed up, raising his hands in defense.
"No. No, no, no, no way! No way we're doing this," he refused. Javi smiled and took his hand, pulling him slightly.
"Come on, it'll be fun!" he bargained. "I promise you won't fall in. I checked the ice yesterday, it's safe. It won't break," he assured and Luke sighed.
"Fine. Just for a moment," he mumbled and Javi almost jumped out of excitement. He grinned and handed Luke a pair of skates.
By the time Luke was done putting them in, Javi was already skating around, only assuring Luke that it was safe. After getting in he was struggling to stay on his legs, so Javi slid over and reached out. Hesitantly at first, he grabbed it and they both rolled further from the ground, onto the ice. They smiled at each other as they were slowly moving around, holding hands. Nothing bad was happening, Luke felt relaxed.
"All right, it's not this bad," he admitted and Javi smirked.
"See? I told you!" he answered.
Suddenly, he figured he could try and make a small trick, so he let go of Luke's hand and proceeded to make a huge circle around. His leg slipped and he almost fell, but he ended up making a couple of pirouettes before stopping, still on his own legs. He kept his arms spread to catch balance again and looked over to Luke. He laughed, finally straightened up and lowering his arms and Luke joined in. When their laughter died out they smiled at each other. It was perfect. It was perfect until there was a sudden crack.
Both men froze up and looked to their legs, unsure of what they wanted to see. Of course, they didn't want to fall in, but if there was no crack under them, that'd mean that the other one is on the thin ice. Luke didn't find cracks and he couldn't stand the thought of Javi in this situation. But maybe it was wrong? Maybe ice cracked only a little? He looked up to meet Javi's terrified gaze and knew it was serious. The next thing, the ice broke under Javi's legs, sending him into freezing-cold water. Of course, he tried to crawl out, it was a natural reaction. Luke got ahold of his panic.
"Don't struggle!" he shouted, sitting down slowly and taking the skates off. "You could break the ice more, hold up, I'm almost done!" he ordered, tying the skates together and adding his scarf. He had a plan.
He slid the skates over, still holding the scarf tightly. Javi automatically caught it, holding on to it like it was his only chance of surviving. Slowly and carefully, Luke pulled him out from the water, then got him to the land. It turned out Luke was ready for a situation when someone suddenly got cold. He made him take off his wet jacket and gave him his own, later taking his bag pack and out of nowhere, he took out a blanket, giving it to Javi so he could her warm. They walked back to Richmond, sick of surprises.
It turned out they were both lucky, getting there safely and just in time to get Javi some medics to make sure he'd be fine. When the next day he was let out from the hospital, he seemed down. When they were all alone in their room, Luke suddenly felt that the man grabbed his hand. He turned and faced him, unsure of what was about to happen.
"I'm sorry," Javi started awkwardly. "I guess... I should've thought more before I took the skates and went there with you. I should've figured you wouldn't like the idea because of what, y' know, happened to you before," he apologized. Luke smiled at him.
"It's okay. I think I might be getting over this, actually," he admitted, making the other man feel a little better.
"You know what? Next year, right before the temperature drops, we take water from this lake and make our own rink in the middle of Richmond, okay?" Javi suggested. Luke couldn't help but chuckle.
"Yeah, sure, I'd love to see that," he teased.

Javi woke up because of someone poking his cheek. He lazily opened his eyes and looked around to see that the finger poking him belonged to Luke. Javi smiled and turned to face his husband.
"Hey. Need anything?" Javi asked sweetly.
"Actually, I could use some help getting up," the man sighed and looked down at his body. Even though he was under an extra blanket it was easy to see that his other hand and leg were missing.
"On it," Javi replied, sitting up.
He quickly got out from bed and walked around it, getting to Luke. With his husband's help, the disabled man was able to sit up and put his only leg on the floor. He'd be able to do it on his own and Javi knew, but he didn't mind helping. After helping him up, he rushed over to the table and brought to Luke his prosthetic leg and hand. They might've not been the best ones, but they were made by Richmond's biggest brains. The leg was somewhat helping to keep balance while walking and thanks to a switch, the hand was able to clench into a fist. Both very useful.
After putting them on, Luke went to the kitchen with the small help of his husband. Again, not required one, but it was surely a nice thing to do. There, he sat next to the table and watched Javi make some food out of the things they had. Suddenly, Río, their dog, rushed into the kitchen, looking around with his clever eyes and trying to find himself something for breakfast. Luke chuckled and got up. He reached the counter and took out some food dog somebody found on a supply run. He was no longer a fan of those.
He filled Río's bowl and watched the animal eat happily. He felt two hands wrap around his torso from the back so almost immediately he leaned his head on Javi's shoulder. They smiled at each other and shared a quick, gentle and sweet kiss.
"Food's ready," Javi said.
They got to the table and started eating. While doing so, they looked around the room. The first thing that was catching their gaze were two flower crowns placed in a frame instead of a photo. They both couldn't help but smile as they remembered this beautiful spring day.
"We gotta make new ones as soon as it gets warmer," Javi decided.
"Hell yeah, we have. I'll just need help with my hand. It's gonna be our spring tradition," Luke smiled wider.
The next thing to get their attention was a real photo made by a camera that was found in one of the houses. On it, they both were grinning widely, wearing suits and holding hands. It was from the day they were first able to refer to each 'husband'. It was on the day of their wedding. They looked at each other, smiling warmly. Javi took Luke's good hand.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you, too," Luke answered. It was obvious, but the memory of this day made it feel like the right thing to say for both of them.
The last thing getting their attention were two pairs of skates hanging from a wall. They stared at them for a moment. None of them was sure if it was a good memory. It was nice to skate, but it was nice while it lasted. Then, it got not-nice. Javi tightened his grip on Luke's hand, getting his attention back.
"You done eating? I've got something to show you," he said.
"Yeah, lead the way," Luke smiled.
They went outside with Río right after getting dressed warmer and headed to the city center. Javi was smiling proudly at the thing in the middle of it, while Luke was blinking in disbelief. Eventually, Luke turned to his husband, also smiling.
"You did that?" he asked.
"I said I would," Javi smirking.
"There we go, then. Richmond's first official rink, huh?" Luke asked.
"Exactly. Oh, and I know you're not good with your leg yet, but maybe wanna try simply sliding around on our feet? No skates involved?" Javi offered. Luke smiled.
"Of course," he agreed.
And so, after sharing a kiss they walked over with Río following them and got on the ice. Holding hands, they were moving around the rink as Río was learning how slippy the ice was. They got their happy ending after all.
