The more she wandered, the scarier this place got.
It had been fairly easy to avoid the attention of the deformed creatures that mingled about throughout her wandering (as much as she'd rather avoid them completely, it seemed that was incredibly hard what with the city's odd physics and the amount of open space). But the further Emi went, the more populous the creatures became--it didn't take long for her to panic enough to turn around, after accidentally brushing against one (and it hadn't even been the strange placement of its limbs that had frightened her--it had been the look that it gave her, with those white-pupiled eyes).
For a while, it seemed all was well; sure, she wasn't making any progress on figuring out where the other orphaned girls were by retracing her steps (and she still had absolutely no idea where she was), but for the most part, the scary things were behind her. (Though she hadn't made it very far. It was hard to walk at a reasonable pace, let alone quickly, when each step sent a jolt of searing pain through her legs...)
But her relief was soon vanquished when the little girl stopped to rest her blistering feet, as a loud noise echoed out from the direction she had come from. Almost immediately, an almost-human yell was returned, and then the strange creatures came into sight--a group much too large for Emi to run from or go unnoticed in. And they were headed her way, some much faster than the others.
Emi froze in place at the sight, merely staring, still sitting on the invisible 'ground'.
"E-Eh... Wha..."
Her attention was so focused on the group of Pariah that she didn't even notice that there was another figure in the way of the mob's path--one that seemed much more composed than herself.
