delving into someone elseās characterās psyche is a daunting task
They said the Avatar had wings as white as snow, her skin as smooth as silk, and her face as beautiful as an angelās.
āI donāt. Have wings, I mean.ā She laughed, if a bit hesitantly.
Asami swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded.
Her skin was not perfect, either.
She ran her fingers along Korraā back, careful not to disturb the fresh wounds. Her lips trailed behind, peppering kisses along any area of unscarred skin she could find ā which was becoming somewhat rare these days.
She did her best to hold the tears in and was glad when none fell.
āIām still here,ā Korra spoke softly as she turned around to face her, one hand cupping her cheek. āIām not going anywhere.ā
āYouāre here,ā Asami repeated, voice somewhat shaken as she instinctively leaned into the warm touch. Blue eyes followed her motion until their forehead rested against each otherās, then Korra smiled.
It was contagious, as it had always been.
The kisses that followed were wet and slow and, perhaps, were full of promises. They were Korraās way to reassure her, but Asami knew they could never give her the comfort she so desperately needed.
Korra knew that, too, but there was nothing either of them could do to change that.
So Asami just weaved her fingers into Korraās soft hair and closed her eyes as she took in a deep breath. Among the smell of blood, of antiseptics and bandages was Korraās unmistakeable scent ā a mix of sweat and salt and something else she couldnāt quite define ā and maybe, this would have to be enough for now.
happy N7 day, despite this having nothing to do with it~
Silver lining
Modern AU; with bending, Amonās victory (probably?) and the Avatar living in hiding.
I was listening to Broken Irisā āForevermoreā when the idea struck. Was supposed to be angst but it took off on its own. IDEK.
Donāt leave
Inspired by pixlbenderās amazing piece of fanart (their everything is amazing, really).
So, Iāve been meaning to write this for quite a while, ever since the moment I saw that drawing.
Still Avatar-verse, but I took the liberty to blend in modern bits, so AU, I guess? Korraās outfit which looks like a shirt in the fanart shall be my scapegoat *goes hide in a corner*.
there should be a warning around here somewhere but Iām not sure if I should include it.
Oh well.
āItās been a while, Korra.ā
āYeah.ā
āI miss you. I mean, Iām talking to you now, but--ā
āI know. Itās just not the same, is it?ā
āNo, itās not.ā
And that was the whole point, really.

Donāt mind me. Just warming up. Or, at least, attempt to do so.
Sometimes, though.
A point of contact. Communicate. Touch. Appreciative. The sight wasn't entirely welcomed. And yet. Contracdicting themselves.
There was always a first.
The notes danced. Not by much and not at all elegant, but. A delicate touch. Broken glass and everything shattered into pieces.
They called it a fragment. Was it worth it?
Itās a real pain in the neck when her flawed memory can never retrace the physical defining facial features of people she wants to remember.
āWho are you?ā
āHave we met before?ā
āIām sorry, I canātā¦ā
ā⦠Iām sorryā¦ā
and really, thatās all she can say these days.
Until one day she stops voicing her apologies
no one wants to hear them, anyway.
Korra hears footsteps drawing near. A moment later, the door creaks, and suddenly sheās not alone anymore.
My name is Asami. Itās a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
For a moment Korra thinks she could hear a faint sound of curtain flapping in the wind.
As if by instinct, her hand reaches up, expecting to touch a face but instead all she can grasp is thin air.
Iām right here.
With just that, her panic seems to fade away.
If it werenāt for the complete darkness in the room, Korra thinks, she would instantly dash for the door, where the voice no doubt comes from.
The tubes and mask could all go to hell for all she cares.
Iām not going anywhere.
and thatās the whole point, really.
Korra knows sheās been drifting in and out of consciousness for days, because everytime she closes her eyes, she can hear people speaking, sometimes to her, sometimes to each other, quietly, voices full of concern, from the other side of the room.
Theyāre all gibberish, but from time to time some words do make sense to her.
Most of the time, though, it just makes Korra think sheās losing her mind, or at least the part that helps her understand words and speeches.
But that canāt be, she reassures herself, because Asamiās words always make sense.
I saw you the other day. You look well.
Korra chuckles a little at that, āI was force-fed a whole giant portion of something like porridge. The painkillers also helped.ā
She doesnāt need to look up to notice a warm smile breaks out on the otherās face.
Really? I thought you hated porridge.
āIām sure Iāve mentioned that I was being force-fed.ā
I donāt recall anyone able to pin your down before.
āYou think with all these things around me, Iād have a choice?ā She protests, yet still aware that thereās no heat in her voice
Not really. But youāre fun to tease.
If Korra could look into a mirror right now, she knows sheād see a faint tint of pink creeping up her face.
Still, she wonders why people keep talking in incomprehensible language to her. Sheās completely sure that she hasnāt been out of the country - Asami speaks her tongue, if that was the case, surely sheād have mentioned.
What, I didnāt know youāve decided to become a thinker - thatās so not like you, Korra.
Her almost-permanent visitor is at it again. There must be a smirk on Asamiās face as usual. Korra wish she would let her touch that smile.
Korra sighs, voice surprising small, as if talking to herself. āNo, itās just that⦠I feel like Iāve been here too long. It makes me feel⦠restlessā. Another quiet sigh. āThere are only a few things I can do and I hate this.ā
Stop thinking too much. Things will get better soon. I promise.
And things do get better. In fact, to Korraās surprise, when she wakes up the next day, suddenly, suddenly she can understand what people say, and indeed, they have been speaking her language as she expected. Suddenly, all the voices, all the words, all the conversations she hears make sense.
Until the doctors and nurses all give Korra raised eyebrows and headshakes when she mentions her name. Itās been a week since everything she hears started to make sense to her - well, everything except this.
āI donāt know who youāre talking about.ā She hates the pitying look the doctorās giving her. āIām sorry to say this but since the day you was admitted, you havenāt had any visitor.ā Stop. āWe couldnāt find anyone who may know you even with all the ID and medical records you had on you.ā
Is that all the answer she could get?
āActually, we were waiting - hoping, to be honest - for you to wake up to ask about that.ā
But Korra was so sure sheās been...
There was someone, wasnāt there?
The doctor leaves and sheās left alone in her room, once again thinking she must be losing it.
The curtains flap once, then twice. Three times are too many, and Korra hates the sound but canāt bring herself to close the window.
She canāt remember her voice.
Korra had always thought Asami had a nice voice.
It was the little things. Laughing - stop teasing me, Korra. Scolding - I have work tomorrow, Korra. Caring - tell me, Korra. Loving - yes, Korra, anything.
She brought her lips to Asamiās throat, then, and kissed her neck. The trail she left behind was wet and slow as she felt every single pulse beating underneath Asamiās skin. She didnāt stop, though, even as Asamiās breaths tickled her ears and she got some of the hair in her nose. Despite the blood and mud, it still smelled like her, like Asami, still as kind and gentle and...
Maybe she would have to learn to take what she could get. What a life.
Asami shuddered slightly. She snaked her arms around Korraās middle and buried her head in her shoulder. The contact wasnāt something new or unfamiliar - theyād been intimate, once, before all this mess happened - but the sudden desire to hold her, to protect her, to shield her still overwhelmed Korra. She tightened her clutch on Asami, her lips moving, mouthing the words over and over.
Iām sorry, Iām sorry, Iām sorry, Iām-
Asami shook her head as she felt the warm liquid seeping into her shirt. Not your fault. It took a few tries, but finally she was able to locate Korraās cheeks with her hands and she pulled her up for a clumsy kiss. Her fingers moved to wipe away Korraās tears in a pattern that felt to Korra like she was trying to give her some reassurance or comfort.
Whatās done is done, it said.
Korra laughed weakly, her throat barely made a sound as she choked. āYou donāt deserve this.ā
No one does. The fingers moved again. Better me than you.
