Let The Past Die Update!
Hello! It’s been a good while since the last chapter update of our Mega Man X fanfic, and just wanted to share what’s going on.
Chapter 8 of Unlimited Potential has been mostly finished, but a combination of me being busy IRL and trying to fine tune it have held me back from getting it done, but it’s close.
Chapter 9 has also been started and the direction is already set in stone.
Things to look forward to: Pallette and Alia stepping more into the forefront of the story, a brief hint at Jet and Kain’s past, and the inevitable confrontation of Axl’s comatose state after the events of Mega Man X8.
Tensions are high and I think that’s also what made this take a little bit longer alongside me being busy IRL. It can be hard to balance everyone’s involvement in the story, as we’ve clearly seen. While X is the main character, there is a large ensemble that shuffles in, and that can take a bit to manage.
Luckily @ratprt and I bounce ideas as much as we can and that makes everything always go a lot smoother.
To people who have been following since the start, thank you for your patience. If you’ve stumbled onto our fic on AO3 and have happened to read the story already, hello!
If you haven’t read yet, maybe check it out? Mega Man kinda hot right now after recent announcements 👀
Your opinion on Gate?
How could you not like him? Gate steals the show in almost every scene he is in. I love characters that ooze with natural charisma like Gate. Gate is one of the most competent villains we have seen in the series, and X6 does a great job at showing that.
We start off at square one, the first opening scene of X6 shows Gate with nothing, but stumbles upon the goldmine that is Zero's remains. The framing of his cutscene does a good job of showing us one thing-- Gate is alone, and he's found his golden ticket. But X6 doesn't stop there. Most other games in the series don't really show how the villain gets to the point that puts the game's events in motion. A lot of the older games get a pass with this because of limitations, but I think one of the best things that X6 tackles is it's pacing and story (Hiding and repairing yourself aside, Zero 😒) And that's because we get Gate's history explained in a natural way, we get to see his past.
And not only that, it connects to Alia, and therefore improves her story as well. Great villains are those that enrich your heroes, and overall improve the story as a whole. There is a reason he is alone at the start of the game, there are hints of snuffed ambition that are reawakened the second that he gets his hands on Zero's parts, and we see how a genius scrambles for relevancy even in a destroyed world because his dream was taken from him. I love Gate. He is done so well and X6 hits the ground running with him. He's charming, he's smart, and above all? He's vulnerable. His goals weren't malicious at their core-- but he will do whatever it takes to not lose his work again. It's human and flawed and it makes him one of the best things about a game that's held back by its design-- but certainly not it's characters. And...he's also very important to the story I am writing. :]
X confronts Signas' decision to make him commander. (Mega Man X fic)
Hoo boy, this one was a doozy to write.
There's a lot going on with this one, and admittedly, Signas is very heavy handed here. Signas up to this point had been very indirect with X about his plans to make him commander. He wasn't exactly subtle, but he never really framed it as a choice.
Signas at this point is unraveling. He is starting to believe that his leadership has lead to too many deaths under his watch -- with Axl being put in a coma by Lumine not helping his downward spiral.
X questions his own lack of agency throughout his career. X is a soldier, performing mission after mission while putting aside his distaste for violence every day to complete his duties. Incidentally, this remains Signas' greatest drive for wanting X to become commander.
X's ability to do what's needed, while never shelving his beliefs is what Signas thinks will make X an even greater commander than he is for the coming battle. X's compassion, alongside his field experience is what Signas believes will save lives. He thinks a non-combat unit like himself can never truly understand what the front lines are like, whereas X has lived most of his life there.
That being said, while Signas' beliefs are founded with good intentions and for the good of the Hunters, it still robs X of his agency. He is ignoring the fact that X would never truly refuse him, even stating that he isn't even offering this as a choice.
You can look at Signas a few ways here. This could be seen as a moment of weakness, where the weight of command has become too much for him-- or you could look at it as a form of self reflection for Signas and him becoming aware of his limitations. Either way, there is a part of Signas that is aware that X would never refuse, which the reader can take that as they will.
Thank you for reading, and if you enjoyed this, be sure to check out the full story. I'll be attaching the series here.
Succession
It's a secret/not so secret that Signas plans is realizing more and more that his position as Commander is coming to an end.
Not for a lack of ability, but for a lack of relevancy in the current times.
He's starting to see that the the person in charge in this new world is someone that experienced it themselves, and there is nobody more fitting than X.
He's aware of X's weaknesses, his traits that will cause him to make mistakes, but ultimately, X's accountability is what makes him the perfect candidate.
He will be Commander very soon.

Chapter 9 of Unlimited Potential is Up!
We're back and in a timely manner! We are nearing the closing point of this part, let me know what you think!
What are some headcannons that you like?
One of the biggest ones that I've run with has to do with X's Limitless Potential, or Unlimited Potential and specifically Maverick Hunter X's interpretation of it. We see X using UP against Sigma during the the OVA and I thought that was just the coolest thing.
Image source Unfortunately, with MHX only being a one off, sadly, we never get to see how this ability manifests outside of a hint in the Vile mode when fighting X and Zero. Once you knock out Zero in that mode, X suddenly surges with power, shooting charge shots like its nothing and overall is insanely strong. I was really captivated by the OVA and that bit of gameplay we got that I thought about if this manifested elsewhere in X's career. And so, it's become a crucial plot element of Let the Past Die. We see that this power is inconsistent, and right now, X doesn't have a full grasp on it. It seems tied to emotions, but Zero ends up making an observation that shakes X to his core-- it's not just his emotions. This power is linked to X's decisiveness, and is rooted in a deep sense of justice. But not justice in the sense of doing good or what's right, but something more personal, maybe even self-fulfilling. If you look at when this power is used in Maverick Hunter X, it's used in response to you knocking out Zero in Vile mode. This isn't a preemptive power, it's reactionary. Zero is down. This power isn't used to save Zero, it's used to fight Vile. When Sigma launches the nukes in the OVA, the damage is done. There's nobody left to protect. An internal decision within X is made-- and this was the result. X throughout his journey only fights when he has to, when no other options are available. I looked at this and thought of it as, "Is this X when he finally stops holding back?" It's also completely unrelated to any armors or special abilities, it's something that X has had in him all along. Why did Dr. Light fear that X might be unstoppable? I thought a lot about that and figured this was the reason why. When X makes the decision himself, how would that fear of Light's manifest, and this is what I thought he was worried about. What grounds this power is that it's still based on a decision, and luckily for all of us, X has a heart-- and a good one. But that doesn't make this power any less terrifying. And what I want to explore is what type of person does X become when he fully embraces this, and how the people around him respond. What challenges come with such might? How will the world change when X finally stops holding back?
