I was thinking about why hanahaki just fundamentally does not work for hollanov (for me, at least)-- namely that for most of their relationship, the adversity is not unrequited love, but rather forbidden love at the cost of an extremely demanding, physical career. Like, I do wholeheartedly believe that if either of them started showing career-damaging symptoms of being in love with their rival in idk 2014-16 while they’re both going to the Olympics and then in deep cup runs….. idk man I think they’re getting the “don’t make me feel emotions that affect my game” surgery. They are not making it to the It Gets Better stage of life. They are not getting the resolution of "does it fucking kill you too?" "not anymore" because they can just. get an off season surgery that makes it stop killing them. and win the cup. and that's not really a fun and compelling fanfic or an HEA as we would normally think of it.
However--
I think there is a story here where idk Shane circa 2014 starts developing symptoms and goes "I can't tell anyone who I've caught feelings for, but it's time to get this surgery to save my career" and all of his loved ones try to talk him out of it and figure out who he's in love with and matchmake them back together. Meanwhile Ilya's in his own torment nexus called the Sochi Olympics.

At which point Veronica has a small (canon) crisis, but then gets over it, Logan and Lilly are freed of all guilt, and Duncan develops A Complex from which he never recovers. and they reinvent polyamory, baffle the rest of Neptune, and refuse to explain their relationship(s) to their parents. and it's a happier world.
