Oh you don't like the marriage counselling scene? Can I ask why? There's a lot I didn't like about Tarlos's storyline in season 5 and how Carlos's hunt for his father's killer was presented as an inconvenience but I actually liked that scene!
hi!!
okay. i always say that i love tarlos no matter what but s5 is genuinely my least favourite for them for that matter. and as time passes and the novelty of scenes wears off, you're sort of mostly left with what you really like. or perhaps dislike. it's not that the scene itself is not good as drama, but it's the how and the why behind it for me.
as you said, it was part of treating what carlos was going through as an inconvenience to his marriage rather than an assault he was still being subjugated to. because your assailant getting away with crime/enjoying impunity is the very continuation of that assault. and there is no sane person who wouldn't act on the instinct of setting that right, even if they're alone in that path, even if it's taking too long, or they have a whole life (job, home, social life etc) waiting for them. so the writing choice to make the closest person to him make him feel like he's not doing enough was in my opinion, a disrespect. i just can't stand seeing carlos sitting in that chair looking so uncomfortable, trying to justify himself and being forced to fix something about his marriage when he's already out there working alone on the case — the actual thing that's violating his life.
especially because carlos is such a private person — the kind who retreats into his shell when he feels unguarded/too exposed. that’s how he protects himself and processes big things. so seeing him in that therapy scene being pushed to talk felt invasive. even if he agreed to go, it still looked like something being done to him. and the whole thing being framed like he wasn’t doing enough as a partner when it should’ve been about him as a bereaved son, as a lone ranger carrying a big responsibility all by himself.. this should've been about carlos alone first before anyone else.. he was rightfully and naturally overwhelmed by suspended grief and responsibility, not neglect. and i just wish the show had treated that with the space and care it deserved.
because i can’t imagine the roles being reversed — if it were tk sitting in that chair being pushed to talk about what sadie did to him. imagine carlos speaking on tk's behalf, telling a therapist that his husband is going to “too many” meetings or spending “too much” time doing AA work, feeling like he's in a neglected relationship so they end up in couples therapy for it.. because even if carlos isn’t the most forthcoming, tk speaking for him — reducing his struggle to a progress report — came off invasive and tone-deaf imo. but it wasn't framed like that in 3x13, they handled TK's trauma carefully and with respect. as it should.
sometimes the worldview of the writers slips through so clearly, you end up with a case of double standards like that. i'm saying that because we live in a world (well- america lmao) where the collective standards, logic and psychology are colonial and doesn't deem justice a demanding urgency, unless it fits certain narratives. it tend to prioritize emotional regulation and moving on over confrontation or sustained grief. justice-seeking is often reframed as bitterness/obsession/ failure to heal, because it disrupts the social narrative of "closure"
that's what's pissing me off. those western frameworks that psychologize moral struggles — turning acts of justice into questions of mental health. instead of "has justice been served?" the question becomes "have you found closure?" which is devious to redirect the responsibility from the world (to fix what’s wrong) to the individual (to accept what’s wrong)..
and there’s also the deep rooted faith in western institutions — the belief that of course justice "will take its course." so when someone takes that pursuit into their own hands (like carlos) (and it doesn't really matter if he's cop here with more access to resources) it’s perceived as distrustful, even destabilizing (TK questioning him..)
so when you end up with a piece of art that echoes this reality and doubles down on appearance of stability over the actual thing, it really isn't surprising but still equally infuriating. it reinforces that something so essential can be reduced to be secondary/ an inconvenience. you’re expected to process pain, not pursue it to its source.
western media (and by extension, western art) often demands that victims remain palatable and contained — the "perfect victim". once a victim becomes active — seeking justice, demanding accountability, or expressing anger — they’re often reframed as obsessive, vengeful, or self-destructive.. etc
in short, it's exhausting to keep seeing the same treatment and pattern over and over again. these are not mere examples in art but a mirror to what actually happens in real life.

desi hiiii <3 okay here is a compilation of five random tarlos moments i really love 1) the make-up dinner; their communication here!! tk intentionally greeting him again and it's just inexplicitly apologetic the way it's so private and tender then directly so when his eyes track carlos' mouth more seriously before he speaks :') 2) the pre engagement party kiss!! tk just freaking proposed to him last night and carlos wants to kiss him right here and now!! the hand that goes automatically on carlos' side, tk's oh I'm being kissed face. everything to me!! 3) carlos making tk giggle here is just too damn adorable. there's just something so pure about making your person laugh :'))))
4) basically everything about the hot mess scene but especially the physicality and the dynamic of their nonverbal communication!! the way tk feels safe enough to be immediately understood by his man.. he doesn't feel like he needs to say anything beside just showing him his upset face :( he's in self preservation mode. all small and hunched in on himself, and carlos is all dominant and gentle and immediately sees it and picks up his legs and crowds into tk's space, putting so much of his own body on his, he really wants tk to know that he's really HERE. he wants to be right in tk's face while he figures out what's making him upset then make it right. they just fit like puzzle pieces, I'm so glad they found each other 5) mm-mm no regrets... i actually don't think I'll ever get over how soft and in love tk sounds here!!
Your point about how it would have been if TK's trauma over Sadie had been treated the same way Carlos's was is such a good one and not something I've ever thought about. You're totally right and I feel like I need to sit with it for a bit longer now because I think it might have totally changed my perspective.
And now I'm thinking about it for the rest of the season as well. If it had been TK who wasn't ready to adopt because he didn't feel capable of being there for a child because he was still confronting his addiction. And I know the circumstances were very tricky because Jonah was an emergency but ... yeah it's definitely very revealing for me, thank you!
of course of course! i love talking about it rather than stewing in my thoughts whenever i rewatch it lol. and yes. you’re right about the adoption storyline later. it puts it all even more into perspective how unevenly carlos’ story was treated when you flip it around like that for the rest of the storyline.
No but think how relieved and happy TK is to see Carlos carefree and healing 😭
yeahhh imagine how happy TK is to see his husband being able to rest for the time being and have some fun with their family and friends 😭 I mean they're both clingy but i feel like TK was extra clingy that night, it's their best friend's wedding and probably carlos' first public thing after what happened and TK wouldn't allow a second where carlos is socialising or standing alone or someone recognising him and asking questions and TK not being here proudly holding his arm and hearing all of it. like it's been almost a year and a half since gabriel’s tragedy. a year and a half of carlos, no matter how many good days are there, still in this suspended grief that hangs on solving the case. and TK has been through it all with him, all the sleepless nights and all nighters and working late, all the bad days and good ones where TK can see every tiny bit of which it lays heavy on him. but now the worst part is behind them. carlos is mostly on paid leave now, probably still going to therapy or doing it with the suggested in-house counselling, they have the adoption process taking its time, they have time to talk and talk about everything and getting ready for what's coming :')))
re your tags on the names of Marjan's family. So Marjan's name is not a Lebanese name?
Also I'm curious to your takes on her getting engaged/introducing Joe to her parents 👀
nope. and neither is Marwani actually. Marjan is persian Iranian and Marwani (and it's actually often Almarwani) is Algerian and Saudi Arabian.
i'm curious actually but there aren't certain positive expectations I'm waiting for here with this storyline. the inaccuracy of the name thing alone was something i immediately rolled my eyes at lol. I mean lucky the pilot was so good in every way I was hooked from the jump because otherwise if i had to think twice about Marjan's disastrous praying I'd have been turned off.
It's clear that Natacha did not get the assistance she needed to give Marjan what she needs. not as simple as guiding her on how to properly pray. But are we surprised that the american TV's portrayal of Arabs falls short in many ways due to lack of cultural competence in writers' rooms/ lack of research and guidance from diaspora Arab Muslim creatives? I mean their first thought about Marjan was like hmm how can we introduce this veiled woman in a storyline that portrays her well without trying to objectify her? oh let's take that veil off and see her hair! I don't hate this storyline but it just doesn't fully sit right with me either. especially as an intro.
so I don't know how they're going to go about this whole thing with Joe but I for one really hated the arranged marriage storyline. Yes it's so normal here for family & friends to try to set up adults. but i just can't stand watching the portrayal of I've-been-engaged-since-I-was-12 and playing it into "love is something you grow into" as a commonplace in muslim Arab culture and not something so questionable and rather a fucked up constraint on people (that has been fought against for decades). not even considering the class, ethnic and national difference that plays into it, given how underage arranged marriage or forced marriage is an actual piled up generational struggle rooted in gender inequality and exacerbated by colonial violence and wars. being cut off from the access to education, the creation of extreme poverty that makes families (especially displaced ones) struggle to provide for their kids and fear for their safety and future and so some come to the conclusion that marriage somehow could protect their kids from harm while providing them with a level of financial stability or facilitating moving in and out of besieged areas/cities and crossing boards etc.
And so it's clear that no one of Marjan's class/background in diaspora or back home would consider this to be the norm. so it's weird to me that this was welcomed normally. The writers just took a bunch of stereotypes about Muslims at large with no regard to national/ethnic or class background differences and turned them on their head.
another inconsistency is the chaperone/Mehrem (family member) thing. because first, actually once you're in public you don't need that during a date. second, someone like Marjan with her lifestyle, background, worldview/character and being a diaspora lebanese muslim in her 20s, would not follow an old Mehrem fatwa (the Islamic laws that change according time, place, people, and other prevailing conditions) unless she actually wants that out of having company.
I just don't think the writers engage with Marjan's background in a consistent realistic or authentic way. I didn't really see anything especially Lebanese about Marjan. beside what the mention of cuisines?
anyway i hate the idea of 'representation' in American media either way. It feels like an oxymoron. and the idea of seeing representation as an ultimate goal is even more dangerous. I find it counterproductive more often than not. this is an industry that perpetuates and financially aid violence and defamation narratives against said people that they pat themselves on the back for including and so it's naive to consider that they'll ever get it right. they tiptoe around certain people and tokenize them more than anything. Literally for every one good bare minimum representation there are dozens of American entertainment-military complex propaganda movies/tv shows/video games doing the exact opposite and taking it to extremes. I just always end up asking myself 'how is this exactly helpful? Yes it's entertaining i love watching it, i love this show but the things that plays into the bigger picture are still parts of the objective reality, what should I do about it?'

Carlos sniffing Jonah’s head before kissing him was so sweet it makes my heart melt
SO FREAKING PRECIOUS 😭 carlos kisses his boys' heads first thing in the morning.. he looks so homely and so warm from sleep and this tiny stinking cute boy is gonna grow up between these two big warm forces of love
Oh their sex life after getting Jonah! I haven't thought of that before LOL. They definitely have to get creative from now on. ugh I know we still have the finale to tell us how the rest of their lives is going to look like but everything makes me more desperate for a sixth season now
Oh i have been thinking about this since forever anon 💀 "but what about the sex!" we know they have all kinds of hot, kinky, passionate, loud sex and they will have to adjust to not being alone anymore. they can't bang it out on every surface or crash through their bedroom door ofc unless Jonah is having a sleepover somewhere and they're alone. retreating all the sex to the bedroom and bathroom is gonna be something for them indeed. but also they're kinda doomed because the loft is almost made entirely of concrete and that echoes every sound 💀 so the chances that they're going to be heard either way are very likely.
on another note though i reallyyy want to read something where it shows their sexual dynamics being disrupted at the beginning, and how it's a new strain on them until they get acclimated to new routines. I know canonly they're both on board with being caretakers now but I can't help wanting to see something where the shift of carlos' convictions around fatherhood and being one still has remnants to come around to and adjust to. and one of them is their sex life.
Which is not just exclusive to carlos though ofc. we know how much physical touch & affection is vital to these two. they need their own space, TK needs somewhere where he can grab carlos and kiss him whenever he wants and be intimate with him and carlos especially, would be more anxious risking it with someone else being close or walking in on them, but the TK of it all, being the wonderful open lover that he is, would take care of them. he'll have more time than carlos to plan their dates and lead them into a new routine around their duties and new life as caretakers. he'll make having to be quiet and having a limited space, fun. Carlos trying to downplay it at first when TK asks what's wrong, i know it's silly but i miss having you in this or that way and TK is so gentle and optimistic and considerate, it's not a deal breaker for them ofc but it's a very important adjustment for them and they're going to go through it together :')
