It's technically an #LPPClassic, but it was never posted online, until now. 😊 • From Wikipedia: The Controversy Tour marked the debut of Mark Brown, a.k.a. Brown Mark, on bass guitar, replacing the departed André Cymone, and the introduction of Prince's new bodyguard, Chick Huntsberry. At first, Prince contemplated dismissing the huge Huntsberry after only being on tour with him for a few days, as Prince thought he was too big and he scared him. Guitarist Dez Dickerson talked him out of it and he eventually became a confidant to Prince and later appeared in Purple Rain as a bouncer. This tour was also notable for Prince's new side group The Time joining him on tour and the resulting backstage drama and arising tension that developed between the two bands. • From Newsweek in December 1981, 'The naughty Prince of Rock', by Jim Miller: 'On stage he's a punk scarecrow bringing the passion of soul to rock and roll burlesque. In the studio, he's a self-taught prodigy, composing, arranging and producing a mongrel mix of creamy ballads and brittle funk, blazing rock played with rude-boy spunk. He's a prophet of sexual anarchy.' • From Los Angeles Herald Examiner's Steve Piesa in February 1982: 'Prince understands the danger he faces of being typecast as a "sex" singer, and although he still performs suggestive material from Dirty Mind and now offers 'Do Me Baby' from the current Controversy, and although he still swivels his hips and does the ultimate guitar-as-phallic-symbol routine, he does not depend on those things. Am I straight...or gay?” ... With those two lines, Prince addressed the questions that the public had about his personal life from the moment he broke through to stardom. At a critical crossroads in his career, he delivered “Controversy”, the first single from his fourth album, also entitled Controversy, in late summer 1981. The lyrics served as a mission statement, with Prince imagining a world in which differences in race, gender and sexual orientation didn’t matter... • “Controversy” found Prince seamlessly blurring the lines between commercial star and critical artist, blending rock, funk, soul and pop in a way that would soon become his trademark... • In its expanded album version, “Controversy” became much more of an avant-garde funk/rock workout than a catchy dance single. The lyrics incorporated the Lord’s Prayer as well as a repeated chant that added an exclamation point to Prince’s worldview at the time: “People call me rude / I wish we all were nude / I wish there was no black or white / I wish there were no rules.”... • If there is one song that sums up the general Prince-ness of Prince, it’s “Controversy”. It’s virtuosic, it’s danceable, it’s a little strange, it’s sexual, it’s religious. Author @toureshow wrote in Time, “('Controversy') is an important song to build Prince as a person who audiences should be thinking about as more than just a music maker, but as a personal liberator” while Daphne A. From princevault.com: On a day off of filming Under The Cherry Moon, Prince hired off the Théâtre de Verdure in Nice, France and had it announced on local radio that 2,000 free tickets would be available for the shoot (of the music video for America, the twentieth Prince video to have been released for broadcast it is the fourth live recording used for a Prince video, but the first live performance video shot at a show staged especially for the video.). The show was announced on local radio station Radio de la Côte a week ahead of the show and 2,000 tickets were made available, given away to local fans on 22 October. Revolution band members, with Eric Leeds and Eddie M. were flown in for the show. Footage for an interview that would later appear on Music Video channel MTV was filmed the same day, after the concert. . From mtv.com, 'PRINCE CAN'T DIE - HE DOESN'T LIVE ON THROUGH HIS MUSIC. WE DO.' By Carvell Wallace 04/22/2016 'If the movie is an imaginary world, the music is as real as it gets. Parade is the sound of a band and recording engineers who know exactly what the fuck they’re doing. Prince keeps the best psychedelic elements from the cartoonish and underappreciated Around the World in a Day but returns to the adroit classical and jazz-inspired composing that elevated Purple Rain two years earlier. Parade is full of ballads with chord progressions that take you left when you thought you were going right French lead-ins and lo-fi effects that shouldn’t be funky but still are drums replaced with buckets, snares played backward, and heavy bells treated as high hats. Other songs trade on lush, complex arrangements with horns and flutes that slowly devolve into noise, only to rise again in new, dark, serpentine melodies. By the end of the album, the sound is so unapologetically maudlin that you can’t help getting caught up. Prince left the stage during "Uptown," leaving his bandmates to finish the song alone. By the time the rest of the players made it back to the dressing room, Prince was gone. He'd not only left the venue — he was on his way to the airport to fly home to Minneapolis... . The next day, Prince's phone started ringing off the hook. He took calls from the legendary concert promoter Bill Graham — who had chastised the audience for their behavior after Prince's set — and Mick Jagger, who tried to convince Prince to return for the second show on Sunday night. . Dr. Fink: 'Mick Jagger, of course, appreciated Prince. He personally asked us to come and do that show, but — and he begged Prince to come back and do the second show in spite of the first one being as disappointing as it was.' . It was #DezDickerson who ultimately convinced Prince to return. . Dez Dickerson: 'Frankly, I don't know what Mick said to try to get him back, but "bless his heart," as we say in the South, it didn't work. So I just literally appealed to his manhood. I said, "We cannot let them do us like this. We can't let people run us out of town, because if we do it now we're going to be running forever. So you gotta come back. We gotta do this, and we just have to make our stand." Do I Believe in Me?’, September 28, 2018: _ ‘This collapsing of the boundaries between sacred and profane is, writes popular music scholar Rupert Till, “part of, and also a result of, a spiritual revolution resulting from the emergence of postmodernity, in which popular cultural art[i]facts are fulfilling the roles traditionally associated with religions.” According to Till, Prince’s postmodern theology “mixes and confuses religion, spirituality, physicality, sexuality, dance, music, identity, ethnicity, and commerce” (Till 76). Some of this mixing and confusing can be seen in the characteristically postmodern–and Princeian–image that adorns the poster included with vinyl copies of the Controversy album... _ Prince’s self-representation as a racially and sexually ambiguous pinup-cum-religious icon was a clear attempt to court (ahem) controversy. But it was also a succinct summary of the contradictions through which he chose to define himself: a kind of hypercondensed visual companion to “Controversy,” the song. This tension between surface shock value and profound personal meaning adds yet another meta-dimension to the multiple intersecting binaries Prince invokes and rejects throughout the song. As Touré writes, “Controversy” is on one level “a classic marketing technique”; #Prince, not yet a star, is “making you wonder about him by telling you many others are wondering about him.” But the conversations he engineers also represent “the key schisms of his art if not of his life–his race, his sexuality, and his egotism versus his humbling relationship to a higher power. "I was really having a hard time with it. Prince called me up and said, 'Al, what I want you to do is shoot me on a newspaper.' All I could think of was newspaper at the bottom of a parakeet cage or something - I couldn't get a visual in my head. It was my brother (Rick) who said, 'You should come up with a newspaper, The Controversy Daily.' That's all I needed, some imagery to go with.
