Treating Metastasis of Breast Cancer
Ninety percent of cancer deaths are due to the original tumour migrating to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis. However, it appears that this process is powered by an enzyme named LOXL2, which helps cancerous tissue to leave breast tissue and enter the bloodstream to travel to other organs.
The researchers at the Institue of Cancer Research have shown LOXL2 to be in high concentrations during early stages of cancer spreading, and patients with higher levels to have lower survival rates.
Because LOXL2 is an enzyme, it can be blocked either naturally or artifically (using targetted drugs). The importance of this enzyme has made targetted drug design a real possibility and has a very realistic chance of success.
Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, said that what the team have shown offers a new approach to tackle the problem of metastases.
